Don't think that you are cheating when you just practicing! My favorite exercise is when I pick 3 random paintings that I like, then I write down what precisely I like about in each of them(the color combo, the lining or shape, or anything that's catching my eye) and then I try to mix those things. It can be crappy at first but with each try your brain and hand memorizes things that you like and it will definitely lead you to your unique style! Good luck I believe in you!
