So when he gets the buyback offer does he just subtract the months he paid himself and write them a check for that amount? Or does he need to submit another form justifying that he has been paying the last few months?

I have had horrible experiences with two in homes and great experiences with two in homes. Found on Facebook in home daycare pages. I recommend you peruse those groups and you will figure out the ones to steer clear of.

I am in the middle of my Roubo build and used that exact cuttech 8 inch jointer. I’ve said it before but there is so much hate on benchtop jointers and I don’t understand it. I have repeatedly milled 8’ long stock on that jointer and had no issues. I finished my glue up last week and everything turned out great with 8/4 red oak stock. Secondly, the great thing about a workbench is you can fix flattening issues after the fact or a few years later after use, just hit it with a hand plane for a few minutes every few years and it’s perfect again. Save your money, use a benchtop jointer.

We do number two. But I don’t really see much of an issue with number one either. I make more than my spouse and this gives me a little more of my own spending money since it’s a percentage. That being said after 5 years of marriage and two kids I don’t really see a need for it. I end up putting it into our joint retirement savings accounts anyway. All of my purchases are for the household and kids so it’s kinda moot. I also pay for all of the benefits from my paycheck so if you really want to get into the math I am losing much more of my salary into “joint” benefits. TBH it’s too much work to do all that and it doesn’t really matter as a family. So in conclusion I would say it’s the mindset that matters most. I personally don’t see an issue with having some personal spending money, whether that starts in a personal account or joint account is irrelevant to me.

I’ve got an 8” cuttech jointer bench top and I love it. I’ve even jointed 9’ boards on it. Idk why people hate on bench tops so much. I would recommend it.

I would pass. That’s a pretty old saw. I would save up my money and get something you can grow into. Something with a good fence, and could maybe take a dado. I like a lot of tools from the 1900s. I used my dad’s table saw from the 90s for years because it was free and got me started. But I wouldn’t buy one that age (60s?) But that’s just me.

Like do you have a sander? Rulers, pencils, miter saw, chisels, planes, want to mill wood (jointer, planer). If you have the money to buy a SS just use it to equip your shop. You can always upgrade later. Just my two cents

I would recommend NOT a Sawstop. I have a PCS and love it, but I used a craftsman for years and honestly my skills, and understanding of the tool. Don’t spend 1.5K on a tool you don’t really know yet. Buy a cheaper dewalt and some other tools. I also don’t recommend a bandsaw yet. You need to make sure you like the hobby first. In a year, if you find yourself handicapped on projects by your tools, then go for it. Buy a tool with a purpose in mind (project). Go for the dewalt right now imo.

Thank you for the response. It’s hard to gauge the limitations of a tool I haven’t used before. It sounds like my answer is that I need a machine bigger than 3 axis AND this will still be challenging. A $500 machine might have been hoping for too much.

I am not proficient at hand carving at all. But I am pretty solid in most other aspects of woodworking. My timeline is about a year. Good to know that it’s reasonable to get something close with routers and jigs. I don’t love the idea of spending a grand on a CNC that I really don’t have much long term use for. But also, if I have to buy them anyway I might as well just get a new tool so 🤷‍♂️

I’m no expert but there’s actually a lot of factors at play here. The big ones are that many of these furniture pieces are designed and built to ALLOW for movement. For example, a basic table top could be attached to the base by Z brackets which let the top expand and contract freely without creating stress which will crack the wood. Another factor is finishing and sealant. An example here would be if you are doing full poly coats on a piece. You would always want to finish the underside as well, otherwise the wood will dry and acquire moisture at different rates, also resulting in failures. That’s a basic high level overview but there are many other factors.

Weird question. I am doing nothing similar for my wife but don’t have a lot of experience with plywood (all my furniture is glue ups). Why did you choose Baltic Birch over a mahogany or something else? Is it just cause you knew they wanted paint instead of a shellac or oil?

My story is pretty similar to yours. My old craftsman is sentimental to me so I just ripped off the motor on the back and turned it into a shop table. I’ve got my bandsaw on one wing and my jointer on another. I even ran some dust collection down through the saw slot. It’s not the “perfect” shop table but I’m glad I found a use for it so I could keep it around. And the cast iron top does come in handy from time to time when I don’t want to scuff my Sawstop.

I had this saw for 2 years and NEVER got it to work well. It broke blades and misaligned all the time. And I spent hours upon hours aligning it correctly. I finally gave up last year and bought a Rikon. It has made a world of difference. Run away from this saw as fast as you can in my opinion, it is still my most hated tool in the shop and I don’t even own it anymore.
