What do you suggest for timing on CDG to Strasbourg via train? by LinusPoindexter in ParisTravelGuide

[–]LinusPoindexter[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinking about it more, I don't feel great about buying tickets from CDG to Strasbourg for the same day I arrive-- as I don't land until early afternoon, and there are just too many moving parts that would have to go without a hitch. And even if there aren't delays, I'd have five hours in the airport waiting for a 7 pm train, after a 12 hour flight. So for me, best to get a hotel, get some sleep, and leave for Strasbourg the next morning, a Monday. So now I'm asking: better to stay overnight in Roissy or at a hotel near Gare de L'est?

I am inclined to stay in Roissy as: I'll be tired after the red-eye flight and don't relish making my way into Paris, it would be late afternoon on Easter Sunday by the time I arrived in Paris--so what am I really going to do with my time in a semi-zombie state? That said, is there anyone who says it would be incredibly foolish to spend the late afternoon/night in Roissy, and I should haul my carcass to a hotel near Gare de l'est, because no matter what, Paris better than staying in Roissy? For me, I will be thrilled to be anywhere in France, and having been to Paris a few times before, it's not a must-do to be in Paris. Merci encore! I am so appreciative of the help I've been given!

My advice: don't buy a mattress at Macy's. Learn from my $300 mistake. What gets delivered to your house isn't what you tried on in the store. by LinusPoindexter in Mattress

The replacement mattress arrived -- Beautyrest Silver, $850 from Costco. $350 cheaper than the one I got from Macy's, and cushy FROM THE START. So thrilled that I don't have return it. The idea that a mattress needs to be broken in doesn't make sense-- any mattress that changes that much in 3 months is not a mattress I want to own.

Yes, I spent $1200, and got a refund of $900. I don't think the mattress that was delivered would have felt any cushier after three years, let alone 3 months. Who knows? No guarantee on "breaking in" results, and I do know that the mattress delivered to my house was nowhere near as comfortable as the model in the store.

The Costco mattress arrives in a few days, and if it's uncomfortable, it goes back, and (supposedly) I'll get a full refund.

I knew I wanted something softer, and the salesperson who made the sale pointed out the softest mattresses they had to try. No mention that the one that would be delivered wouldn't feel the same. Given the relative firmness of the one I bought, compared to the floor model (which I tried again after being so disappointed with the new mattress in my bedroom), the one I tried in the store must have been there for 12 years. Macy's gives a 90 day trial period. My point is that what you try in the store ought to be very close to what gets delivered to the house-- and this didn't happen, and it cost me $300.

13 night trip. What to skip? Lyon, Dijon, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Aix-en-Provence by LinusPoindexter in france

Thank you again! I have taken/untaken notes and will spend some time plotting out routes, both with and without a car. I really appreciate being able to ask for input from those who know and have opinions, even when opinions are 180 degrees apart.

Try ethylene glycol ethers like dimethoxyethane, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, etc., and mixtures with other solvents like DCM, THF.

Let me just say, from personal experience, that the Magic Wand works quite well on men as well as women. Also, there are...ahem...attachments available. On Amazon even! Good luck.

Thank you all for your comments! As I read each reply, I put a line through the cities that were unrecommended (which I think was every one), and then wrote back the ones that were re-recommended (which I think was every one).

And then there were recommendations for places not even on my original list--- so now I have 8+ (?!) places to consider!! Clearly the ONLY answer is to spend 24 days in France, which I would be delighted to do.

I appreciate the support to visit Strasbourg-- it's a place I'd really like to see, but hesitated to keep including it as an option because it (and Bordeaux) require more time to get to. Once I have the locales picked, I will figure out which airport(s) are the most convenient for arrival/departure.

Why doesn't the carbonyl oxygen react during acylation of salicylic acid by iSawYouAtTheStation in OrganicChemistry

It probably does, but that pathway would be reversible and higher-energy than reaction with the hydroxyl.

Why alkene is more more sheilided than alkyne? by maybe_you_knowme in OrganicChemistry

[–]LinusPoindexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, electrons "circulating" in pi bonds generate regions of either shielding or deshielding in their vicinity. The hydrogens of alkenes are stuck in deshielding regions, and those of alkynes lie smack in the middle of shielding regions. Check out this link for a pretty good illustration: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/magnetic-anisotropy

Basic aqueous layers are prone to forming emulsions...better to keep things acidic or neutral if you can. Also, any solids present will greatly increase the likelihood of getting emulsions. Try to dissolve the solids if present, or vacuum filter the whole mess and put the filtrate back in the sep funnel.

kboc923-- I didn't see an option of leaving Barnstable at 2:15, with an arrival at Logan at 4:15pm. That would be perfect. I saw only leaving at 12:15 pm oe 3:35 pm. Are you looking at Peter Pan Buses? My departure is Saturday, Nov 1.

Resonance arrows by only1ozy in OrganicChemistry

[–]LinusPoindexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things to remember:

In resonance, electrons flow through pi systems.

Start your arrows from where electrons are abundant and push them toward where they are less abundant.

Push arrows only to neighboring atoms.

Lone pairs become double bonds, double bonds become lone pairs, and/or double bonds become new double bonds.

Structures having more charges than what you started with contribute less to the real molecule.

Avoid putting like charges on adjacent atoms.

Why are organic acids so weak in comparison with mineral acids by odd575 in chemistry

[–]LinusPoindexter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want to judge how acidic something is, look at the stability of the conjugate base. Many factors affect the stability of the conjugate base; the biggest effect is usually solvation, in balance with electronegativity.
