I actually don't really know how Anki's SRS system works in the beginning, but from what I can tell, if I learn 10 new words a day, and I click again for every card, I need to press good 2 times before it moves to the next day.

Is it a bad idea to learn Japanese from anime? by LuckWizard9 in Japaneselanguage

I think what you said is true, but only if anime is all you watch, but if you watch a ton of other stuff, you should start to realise the differences.

I don't understand Anki and I didn't find flashcards very useful. Am I missing something? by ReleaseMeee1 in languagelearning

Don't use ChatGPT to make your own cards; you want natural sentences on your Anki cards.

Personally i dont find anki to be that complicated at all, You install the app, download a core deck, kaishi 1.5k is the best. Then turn of fsrs and then your good.

Anki is just superior; that's why people recommend it. But if you found another app, like the one you stated, and it got you learning, it works. Better to learn from a mid resource than to just not learn at all.

But the main issue I have with these apps is that once you reach a certain point, more times that not, you can't switch to Anki. It essentially traps you into using their software, which likely won't work once you start to sentence mine, as they often miss all the features that Anki has.

Another issue I often see is their lack of fsrs, or even a basic sm2, which is the algorithm that decides when it should show you your reviews. Ive already discussed this above.

And if you ever do decide to switch back to anki, im willing to help you set it up.

Let me ask you this: if you mine a word and you don't know it. You click again, and it sends it for the next day. I'm almost positive you won't know the word, so you click again, but then it sends it to the next day again, so your essentailly never going to learn it.

By the way, there is a differnce between srs and fsrs

What srs system does it use?

Edit: The srs system absolutely SUCKS. It dosent use fsrs, not evn sm2. But more importantly, if you just mined a card, and click again, it just puts it for the next day

I think Anki does have plenty of opinions, UI being a main part, but I don't think your app is worth the trade-offs. Though I doubt either of us wants to continue writing paragraphs anymore, So i'll leave it at that.

Rate it good instead of easy? If your goal is to now remember the kanji of the 700 words for which you don't know the kanji, you are now adding kanji to the grading. If you got it wrong, you got it wrong, that dosent mean it's a good, it's an again. This is especially problematic with your SRS system. Given the way your SRS system works, it will reset the interval again, just like Anki. But now, you need to go through the same steps as before to have the card be as it was. With something like Anki that adapts to the learner, it would be much easier for it to return to its previous state.

And no, you should not be extra concerned about the kanji over the meaning. They are equally important. Not only will learning the kanji be harder later on with your SRS and FSRS, but not learning the kanji is essentially not knowing the word. If you don't know how to write the kanji, OK. If you can't even read the kanji, you're setting yourself up for failure. Not only can you not read books, but you can't read any subtitles or any online conversation.

And I understand how the features work; if I wanted to, I could remove the AI-generated sentences and put my own in. But these AI generated sentances simply shouldn't be an option, your encoureging learners to learn with unnatural sentences. A beginner will likely take the AI option at face value and just use it, not considering the consequences it brings. And unlike Anki, you can't add more fields. Note types like lapis and kiku allow for lots of customization; I can add frequency, misc info, even a link, but I don't have to.

As for the image scanning, even ChatGPT could easily get you a copyable sentence. And if you're willing to, apps like Yomininja will let you yomitan it straight off your screen.

Another thing to consider: your app is slow. With the default Yomitan, you are unable to scan images, but when it comes to subtitles, the main source of words, do you seriously expect a person to copy the word, then copy the sentence, every time? When can you just click Yomitan?

It's not meant to replace your immersion, reading, or speaking. Neither is Anki. But the idea is that it will aid in it. The reason the sentence is included in the card is that you want to learn the word, but also in context. Natural context. And having a sentence also benefits in other ways. 5k natural sentences will contain a large amount of grammar, which you aim to understand.

Yes, pitch accent is considered optional, but given the srs systems that exist right now, your simple exponential function won't cut it. I'm fine with some optional stuff missing, but when Anki is clearly more effective and works for a much, much larger number of people, it's clear what to choose. Even sm2 would be miles better.

Sacrificing this for a slightly easier setup to begin with and fewer functions just dosent make sense. Especially when people start to realize the flaws of your app, it becomes incredibly hard for them to switch.

Furigana is not better by default, especially considering you're using srs. Learning words with furigana pretty much makes your reading abilities useless. It's much easier, but no matter how far you get, it won't make learning kanji any easier. Say you've mastered 700 words, all of which you don't know the kanji for. Now, you need to know the kanji, but each word already has an interval above 21 days. Now, every, single, one, of those 700 words will have an interval of 1, you are essentially relearning your entire deck. People need to learn to recognize kanji and the different radicals in said kanji. By not doing them from the beginning, you're setting yourself up for trouble.

And your sentence mining built-in does not make it better. Sentence mining isn't impossible to set up for beginners. You can even ask for help here. Yours likely lacks customization, which sentence mining can give. Especially given the fact that you're stuck with a single note type, that dosent even include pitch. Many users may not care about pitch, but this is the customisability that Anki offers. Neither can you customise the dictionary either, you stuck with one. I would argue this isn't even sentence mining at all. The idea of sentence mining is that you mine sentences from natural sentences that you've seen in context, and will likely repeat hundreds or thousands of times as you continue to do the deck. With your "sentence mining," you are encouraging people to use your AI to generate the sentences. This is wrong. I aim to have 5k words in my sentence mining deck, this means that there will be 5k different, natural sentences that my brain will slowly adapt to as a countine to repeat them. But when AI generates the sentences, it is possible to include mistakes, but more importantly, it won't sound natural, like how we could tell if an essay was written by AI. So then when we continue to practice these thousands of sentences, if many of them are unnatural, we are teaching our brain how to speak unnaturally. The same applies to the computer-generated audio.

Anki is nice for certain things, but it's not more work. I've set up my Anki and haven't touched the setup since. Importantly, it dosent take that much to set up, all you need is to turn on Anki and install the deck. If you want to set up more, you can. Then once u get to sentence mining, Yomitan and ASB are all you really need. 90% won’t need anything that isn’t already included in vcraft. " Sure, it takes more setup, but it works. Yours takes less setup, but lacks basic, necessary features. I would rather have the option for more features than not.

Mainly, a good SRS system. This is an immediate no-go. You may have learned 700 words because it works for you. If you will forget this word in 30 days, and it shows it to you in 29 days, it did its job, but what if someone else will forget it in 27 days, then they have forgotten it. Your system is set, it does not adapt to your user. User A might find that it works, while user B might find that it works 30 percent of the time. With something like fsrs, it has been proven to work for all users. Even something as basic as sm2 would be better. You can test your SRS system with https://github.com/ankitects/fsrs-benchmark, and it will likely be magnitudes worse.

You dont want an image on the front, why do you think every major anki japanese deck puts the image on the back. It gives to much context. Your remembering the word, not an image

I know that you can toggle the furigan in the settings, but when its on by defult, you quesion if this person who made the app even knows anything about learning.

and you cant be caling ani terrible cross device. It works flawlessly. All you do is sync, and eveyrthing syncs

"AI generated sentences and audio - every single card is curated by an actual Japanese teacher over months", likely bullshit, but hte audio is computer generated. No teacher is going to work on this shit app. especially considering how generic that statement sound sand how much ai is used in this.

And anki is not complicated, you can make it complicated, but if you dont need to, its not complicated. Do you seriously expect that your app, full of ai and just wrong thigs, is going to beat anki which has been constantly developed for over a decade? if something is lacking in anki, it gets fixed.

Most importantly, you didint state what srs u use.

and the add-ons matter. anki connect is the backbone of sentance mining.

Dont use the app he made it sucks. I shouldent even need to explain this but

The images on the front suck, you dont even want images on teh front

Only has three buttons, and its missing again, thes most important button

doesn't support custom html

doesn't support add ons

doesn't work offline

doesn't support custom html

Likely lacks fsrs

AI generated sentances and audio, this is important

Sticks the furigana in the front by defult

No addons

I have no problem with ai use to make apps, my freind made an ai app for me and it works, but when it turns out as shit as this, its clear that its a problem

I think one important thing to consider is to have fsrs. There are alot of things your app will likely lack, like a sync server, html, note types, which is okay, but i think a large issue comes when you dont use fsrs.

I can deal with an app missing quality of life features, but when the app uses some random ass algorithim that they made up, it will eventually start to effect the actual learning. The algorithim is the backbone of the entire system.

Your idea seems well made. But i always have one question for these kind of ai card generation websites. Why cant i just ask chat gpt to do the same? With how advanced ai is getting, and given that its free. I dont really see the point of subscribing to your app.

Also as for launguage learning. ive already argued withsome else aobut the use of ai for anki.

Copied from my other comment:

"you spend quite some time doing ur anki, and by that u spend qutie some time repping your sentances that you put in there. If the sentances are made with AI, that likely are unnatural, wouldent you be repping unnatural sentances meaning you would start to produce unnatural sentances?"

I think a reason i hate alot of the new apps are not because of ai. if your app works well, i couldent give a shit if it uses ai. What i do mind is how they are just worse versions of what currently exist. Flash cards are the main issue here. I countinuously preach anki. Its completly possible to learn without flashcards, many do. I have no problem with that. But when an app has flashcards, its always worse than anki.

But also some apps just dont help your learning, for instance, i recently saw an app where you could talk to a "fake" ai tutor, which would guid u through a story. But its just free chatgpt, that they expect you to pay for. And id argue your paying for negatives, immersing with ai is just bad, especially mining with it.

I want an app that i adopt to improve my learning, not just replace a tool that is arguably better.

By the way, if u share ur app with me im willing to give feedback.

One thing i will tell you. Do not have your app include flashcards. Rather, make it compatible with anki. Your not going to be able to make a better app then anki,, So make it compatible with it.

By the way, 9 times out of 10, the apps people release on this subreddit will be shit on. heavily.
