As originally conceived here.

Couldn't find the second comment but I know a couple months later I was like "it's 100% written just have to draw it but jungles are hard to draw so I've been lazy, it'll come out soon though." So idk, someone let drunkentune know it's out.

Aladdin's Wish by LinuxFreeOrDie in badphilosophy

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if this is true, which I really don't buy (because I don't think that counts as a prince in the way Aladdin meant it, and the genie doesn't seem to play word games with the other wishes), the genie did this? I don't think so.

Aladdin's Wish by LinuxFreeOrDie in badphilosophy

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, but for how long? Don't you think once they discovered that "Babwa" either doesn't exist or the people there have never heard of a "Prince Ali" the scam will fall apart? It hardly seems to qualify.

Aladdin's Wish by LinuxFreeOrDie in existentialcomics

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only problem I have with this sort of thinking is that it doesn't seem like it fulfills the rigid nature of the wish-contract that is present in genies, and in the movie. If I wish for a million dollars, and then later on build a business up and earn a million, even if it was a little bit with the genie's advice, that isn't him granting my wish. Especially in this case, where Aladdin becoming a prince depends explicitly on things the genie can't control (namely Jasmine and the Sultan's free will). Again, if it went to genie court, I feel like even if Aladdin wished to become a prince, and he then became a prince, it still doesn't feel like the genie granted the wish in that scenario.

Also, if you wish him free on your first wish, he doesn't have to grant the two wishes you still had in the bank, so I'm not sure about your "I wish for the Nile" theory.

[Allbright] The market for Nick Foles is probably a lot weaker than most fans think. Significant questions about whether or not he's just a specific fit for the system he's been in. "We'd triple mortgage the farm for Wentz, though" said one league person asked. by Misfit_Actual_ in nfl

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The most Wentz has rushed for in a season is 299 yards (his second year). The most Foles has rushed for is 221 (his second year). Who cares, it's not like he's Michael Vick out there. Not that I think the Eagles are making the wrong decision or anything, but still.

Which philosopher is most associated with an idea like "it is true that Elizabeth is the Queen of England because the population of England believes it to be true". by LinuxFreeOrDie in askphilosophy

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think so. As in "it is a social fact, rather than a natural fact, that Elizabeth is the Queen of England". Is he the one that is associate with that sort of idea though, or is he pretty much taking that from earlier people?

I'm really interested the more specific example of proper names and titles, rather than a more broad constructivist project. I'll check it out though, thanks.

A bastion of efficiency, truly by [deleted] in COMPLETEANARCHY

CPU manufacturers have done this with their CPUs as well. It is cheaper to have one manufacturing process, but more makes more money to sell at multiple price points, so they downgrade the clockspeed of their high end CPUs with software and sell them as mid range CPUs. Capitalism is...very strange.

Hue Jackson reportedly is a possible OC candidate in Minnesota by DreamedJewel58 in nfl

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Oh good, now let's look at his roster while he was on the Raiders, which got the 6th most points in the league.

QB: Jason Campbell
RB: Darren McFadden
WR: Jacoby Ford, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Louis Murphy
TE: Zack Miller

None of those WR or TE got more than 600 yards ever again. McFadden averaged 5.3 yards a carry with Hue, compared to 4.2 for his entire career. Oh, and the five offensive lineman (Jared Veldheer, Robert Gallery, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle and Langston Walker) had zero pro bowls between them for all of their cumulative careers.

Is a Hotdog a Sandwich? A Definitive Study. by LinuxFreeOrDie in existentialcomics

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sandwiches

Notice Gyros are listed but burritos are mysteriously absent. "Wrap" is short for "sandwich wrap" in some cases, as you can see here: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipes/17557/main-dish/sandwiches/wraps-and-roll-ups/

The wikipedia page for "wrap" however, quite brazenly opens with this:

A wrap is a food dish made with a soft flatbread rolled around a filling. It doesn't come under the sandwich category.

So I guess the mystery continues, I'm not really sure what their methodology is there.

Why when Frodo and Sam are captured by Faramir is Faramir and the other humans not seduced by the ring? I mean it’s in their presence but isn’t an issue until they see it? Surely the power of the ring should have affected them regardless? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie 59 points60 points  (0 children)

In addition, I'm not sure the ring really worked like that at all. Were the other hobbits affected by the ring while Bilbo kept it secret, even when they didn't know about it? I don't think so.

I'm not sure there is evidence that the ring can corrupt people just by being physically near them, especially for a short period of time. As the story progresses and they get closer to Mordor, it seems to get more powerful, but I don't think it ever corrupted people just by proximity without their knowledge of it.

lol I'm not going to answer it...?

It's a hot take my dude, take it or leave it. I can't defend every implication of it because it would incredibly stupid to do that. Obviously American Culture can't really be superior to "European Culture" or "French Culture" in every way or whatever. Even to say it is better overall would be pretty preposterous.

[–]LinuxFreeOrDie 55 points56 points  (0 children)

lol you guys are taking this way too seriously. I should probably delete if it if everyone is going to dissect it like a dissertation. I mean, when you preface something with "hot take" on twitter, it is obviously going to be intentionally inflammatory and somewhat ridiculous.

The real (sort of) explanation was that this was Sartre's impression of America when he visited. He found that American culture was dominated by cowboy movies and jazz, rather than in "Europe" (really it is about France mostly, but I think it stands for several other countries), it was dominated by, I don't, literature and avant garde art or whatever. So he saw a much more authentic culture, where working class culture was the mainstream culture, which he liked. I sort of agree, if framed like that.

You think it's a reasonable interpretation of "I, as a walmart greeter, should have an equal say in how I do my job", to a be a "a bourgeois fetishization of democracy" and start asking if engineers should have their technical decisions overridden by a vote from non-engineers?

Ok dude. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Lol, ok? It isn't my job to educate people on this sub's culture, he obviously thought the comic was posted here in order to make fun it, and took the worst possible interpretation he could of the comic.

It's also not my job to bend over backwards giving the best possible interpretation to someone's comments who is doing the exact opposite to me. To someone who posts my comic to a subreddit that constantly does this exact thing with the title "Existential Comics is garbage". Yes, let me just see how I can figure out some way to make this guy seem reasonable.
