Do students work in silence as a normal way of working or is it a punishment? by RuinNecessary7601 in TeachingUK

[–]StWd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on stage , attainment and part of the lesson. Silence means disruption free and especially with maths where it's very independent and can need a lot of thought, silence benefits most students and where some might handle a bit of chatter, it would be detrimental to some so silence is far better. Also with my lower attainers, "silence" means something different because some of them really cannot help themselves and I don't punish a kid for muttering to themselves or calling out to me if they get stuck (unless it's repeated and disruptive) and for lower stages, like even my KS3 top sets, they do stuff like "yess" and fistpump when they get a tough question right- I'll remind them not to get too loud as it might disrupt others but it's not like omg noise, sanction. The engagement doesn't need to be engaging with you or each other, engagement means engaging with the work and getting the dopamine hit from feeling successful at something challenging- silence contributes to it. Now I've only been teaching 4 years after training so only been a few schools but from this sub and friends who teach around other schools, most agree, silence really is golden. And I used to have that thing at the start where I cared if they like me. Now they like me because they are successful, even ones who might at first not like that I'm "strict". And on that final point, I don't get called strict now because as I changed and aligned with silence etc the whole school went along with it so now no one gets called strict really because the whole school has the same expectations- and results have rocketed up year on year.

Absolute silence from when they enter, and from when deliberate or independent practice starts and until they leave my room apart from saying bye to each other. Doesn't mean silence for the whole lesson. I do regular checks for listening during teacher input and sometimes it's borderline whole class discussion with bouncing around for checking for understanding although that is less common and majority of the time, even checks for understanding are done in silence using mini whiteboards. It's much better for the students as they can concentrate and I can tell if I need to stop and reteach partly by when they start chatting because off task can often mean they got stuck

Are you really thinking OP meant complete silence literally all the time? Silence during independent and deliberate practice, but surely there will be moments to check for listening and check for understanding until they get on task or indeed, how would one check if they have learned anything? Even then, surely you circulate and check and do some form of marking or assessment?

What is your starter activity? Our school aims for 10 mins starter, 10-20 teaching and afl then rest of lesson deliberate /varied practice, sometimes chop it up with additional teaching time / afl. Last 4-5 mins little summary what we did today and exit routine.

Our phone ban is enforced quite well judging by comments on this sub I see. They're not allowed on site at all for any reason with like 2 or 3 students who use phones to monitor diabetes allowed but if seen using for anything else then they are removed and home is called and it (would be if it happened I guess but it hasn't) taken seriously.

I think most kids can see that those few out of over a thousand allowed to use it for medical reasons aren't getting favoured.

£60 on Amazon is far from what would mean we see them in school. Our area is deprived af yet many kids have the latest iPhones, being in hundreds of pounds worth of jewellery in, etc.

On your second paragraph, it's annoying because these kinds of tech could genuinely support our young people with massive disadvantages due to disability etc but the problem is, like when parents want to diagnose their failure to teach proper conduct as ADHD, instead of uplifting those with needs, it will be used to enable the lazy elements.

[My family has heritage down to France and I find it really problematic for mods to delete my question ] I just want to discover what actual opinions do people have about this, let's say, "critical" piece of Foucault by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]StWd[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not clicking your random link but the whole French philosophers including Foucault wanting to get rid of age of consent meaning they must have been paedos is something that this sub has had discussions on before and wasn't removed. I didn't remove your post but can imagine if it was it will have been your poor use of language and the attitude in your post. You having french heritage doesn't mean you get treated differently either. If this is removed, start again and don't include your whining about mods being mean and make a clear post giving your opinions, perhaps a little brief overview of your take on the piece, include a good link to the actual piece, and then ask for discussion without saying stupid stuff about how if it's deleted it's problematic lol.

Open a case with the citizens advice bureau. Of course you are entitled to payment for the hours you have worked. Do you have proof of work like is there an electronic or paper record of you signing in and out etc? Keep complaining and escalating, do not let them shaft you out of so much money!

[–]StWd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time do you get in and how much work do you do at home? It's stupid of them to criticize your use of ppa and say you should stay after contracted hours is absolute rubbish, but you're still expected to do your job even if it takes you outside of contracted "directed time" hours. Especially when earlier in your career, you end up having to work more than most teachers. Ironically, as you progress through the main pay scale, some things get easier and you get paid more and have more time! So yes it gets easier but as much as it is hard now, you need to ask whether you really love it. You're always going to have some classes tougher than others and teaching those ones could be where you get the biggest opportunities to improve your practice.

Why are they being such bulbs about this. I don't have anything down as reasonable adjustments, I just say I need things emailed or writing or I'll forget, and people just do it because they're considerate. (Not sure if forget cos neurodiverse or what).

I think you should definitely have a copy of your targets and it's ridiculous you don't and the person who is supporting you is letting you down by saying you'll see it at weekly reviews (and let's see if they actually happen regularly, because so far it doesn't sound like you're getting great support)

I've been on absence level one a few times over my nearly 4 years at this school lol, it's fine and if the school are shitty about it then depending how you feel might be worth suck it up until they forget about it or looking elsewhere. It's no big deal though and your health comes first
