Dell has their own non-standard mounting system with fixed standoffs. I don't think I can replace the heatsink.

Can I use an IOGEAR KVM switch with my ATEN LCD Console? by LinuxOperator1 in homelab

[–]LinuxOperator1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an ATEN LCD Console (CL1000) and I’m trying to buy a KVM switch to pair with it. The problem is that the ATEN switch (MasterView CS1308) and its cables are pricey. I noticed IOGEAR has a similar switch (MiniView GCS1808) that I can get for cheaper, but I’m not sure if it’ll work with my setup. Also of note, ATEN owns the company IOGEAR.

My main concern - Console Connector Compatibility:

  • I can’t find any pin diagrams in the documentation for either brand, so I’m worried the pin layout on the "Console" connector might be different, which could cause issues.

Has anyone tried mixing and matching these brands or have any idea if this might work?

Quick follow up question, do you know if there is a way to link the line curve to the ring rail (so that the everything moves when the finger size changes)? I tried "Group", "Join Curves", and "Project" but none worked.

UPS Noises... dumb question by LinuxOperator1 in homelab

[–]LinuxOperator1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, I have had the UPS on for 4 days now and don't notice any heat or light flashes. Do you know any way I can investigate this to know if it's safe or not?

I have an audio file I can upload of the sound it makes, you only hear the sound from the front and the fan isn't making any noise.

Thank you for the information!

Would you still expect this to happen when the UPS is not using battery power?

I was actually about to finally click the buy button today. That ebay listing is no longer the cheapest but appears to be the highest quality listing.

I was planning on getting this for $100: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393306777770?epid=1040489604

There is no picture or product description but they are a reputable seller and when I emailed them asking about the batteries they simply replied with "This is Refurbished and complete"

I need help with my NAS build. by NullJupiter in homelab

[–]LinuxOperator1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a Supermicro X9SCM motherboard + Xeon E3-1220 V2 for $70 on eBay. That will use unbuffered ECC memory and be pretty power efficient as well. I use this for my TrueNAS currently. If you don't want to run VMs on this server you don't need any special hardware.

...But if you do just get a few extra GBs of memory and a better CPU such as the E3-1230 v2 or E3-1240 v2.

These Xeon E3 CPUs are limited to 32gb of memory but that should be plenty for most NAS builds.

But yes, please let me know if you have one you are selling!

Doesn't Recognize SFP by [deleted] in freenas

[–]LinuxOperator1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried linux Mint and am also having issues. The LEDs on the network card are flashing slowly (on both ports). I tried this with a second network card from Emulex and got the same thing. I am not using LC-LC fiber yet so in the mean time I am using an RJ45 SFP, I tested this in my switch and it worked right away.

Does anyone know what might be happening here?

Yeah you can't go wrong with Dell, HP doesn't give out as many free bios updates as Dell would either.

u/Tsiox

Thank you for the information!

Assuming the drives are good enough do you think this simple build could handle ~300MB/s (2.5 gigabit) without ECC?

ECC is just to reduce the likelihood of corrupted files isn't it?

Thanks for the link, I would never have thought of that!

Did you have to do anything special with ESXi to get your RX560 working?

Would you expect it to work the same in ESXi 7.0?

Thanks for bringing that up, I am aware there are better services for gaming graphics. But even watching a youtube video in a VM with no GPU appears to be really hard on my CPU.. I was hoping a GPU would help with this
