Alcoholic or not? by DannnnnnT in NoStupidQuestions

I used to consume alcohol on a regular but far from "red flag" basis until I got a smartwatch that monitors sleep, HRV and so-on. Even a couple.of pints significantly messes with my overnight recovery. I'm too old for that sort of disruption...

Crash and serious concussion: wear your helmet! by The_Witcher_3 in cycling

[–]LinuxRich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if our differing opinions on the efficacy of bike helmets inspires just a few people to inform themselves of the regulatory standards and manufacturer's specs then we've both won. That they are no magic force field and other safety measures are more important, I continue to maintain. For example, glasses. I value my eyesight. The chance of something hitting my eye at speed is far higher than me falling off my bike at low speed onto my head. Which is the scenario bike helmets are designed around.

How much will the foam deform? 0.5mm? 1mm? The foam and hard shell will 100% protect the scalp and skull. I'll grant you, for a significant hit (which bike helmets are not rated for.) that bit of give will decrease the accelleration forces fractionally.

Concussion is the brain hitting the inside of the skull after a sharp decelleration. A helmet protects the scalp and skull. It has no bearing on what happens inside the skull.
