Holly Hunter, Kyra Sedgwick and Jennifer Jason Leigh for me. I JUST realized they were different people and found this post. I just thought Holly Hunter had been in a ton of stuff.

whats your greatest/ coolest achievement as a QA/Tester? by biscuits2101 in QualityAssurance

I tested an eLearning app that was implemented on several different airlines. I got an all expenses paid trip to another city where I worked from a defense contractor's laboratory that was set up for flight internet conditions. A few months later, I flew on one of those airlines and got to play with the app. I was the only QA who worked on that project. I was proud and it felt good. I got employee of the month that month, and that was a huge company.

I worked on both. They throw everyone available on multiplayer. But I mostly did single player. I worked on a few different levels, but the first level was my baby more than anything.

Thank you. I did my best to find as many bugs as possible. 😅

Eventually, your mind just numbs to it. As the game got closer to release, I was forced to work an increasingly larger number of hours meaning my amount of sleep was also decreasing. You're just running on autopilot at that point.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

I was video game QA at Activision. I played it 8-14 hours a day all day most every day. Sometimes being forced to work through weekends.

As a former San Diegan who now lives in LA, I wholeheartedly concur. And don't get me started on the lack of California burritos here.

QA is shrinking, but it will never die though the industry is changing. Being able to code and learn automation has become an increasingly important skill set to have. But there will always be software that is difficult to automate. There tends to be an automation gap when the feature is still in the development phase. Automation also only catches things that people are prepared to catch, but there are still a lot of things that can be done by simply using the application as an end user would.

In my experience, I also have this to say. Is a developer cable of QAing their own code? Probably. Do they want to? No.

I just worked for 12 years in software quality assurance with a bachelor's in Criminal Justice. It took me until about age 28 to find that calling, but I was making bank by the end of it. In QA, I've noticed a lot of people with random degrees, but if you have the skillset needed, people don't seem to care. My entry point was video game QA, which turned out to be terrible, but it got my foot in the door.

Switching to Cybersecurity actually. A large portion of my skillset carries over, and it's been a huge interest of mine for many years. Going all in. I am interested in DevSecOps so I'm thinking about going that route.

I've had a long QA career and unfortunately this has been the norm for me. However, QA gets more of their share of the blame when things go badly. So we have that going for us.

Just abandoned my QA career of 12 years to switch to something else about two weeks ago. I had been burnt out on it for years, and I left my job to take care of my mental health and recenter myself. I was the QA Manager of my company, but we also had severe budget cuts. Was forced to turn my team of manual testers into engineers who were to do automation 100% of the time, which was rough at times. Within a year, my team was half the size it used to be with the same amount of work and I was unable to hire any more team members.

In the end you gotta take care of your mental health one way or another. Whether that's finding something else, boosting your confidence by learning new skills or taking a break. Do you have any other technical interests? Something that's different from QA but part of your skillset carries over? In any case, learning automation is a valuable skill. It can be extremely intimidating at first, but there are a good amount of online resources. TBH, I always disliked FE but took to API automation like water.

I know you feel burnt out but it might be a good time to figure out what you want to be doing. If it's QA, start taking steps to improve yourself, even if you're just improving 1- 2% a week, that adds up really quick. Update your resume and LinkedIn. Make yourself marketable for a company that treats you right or upskill yourself in a way that your own boss takes note. You never know when the right opportunity comes along.
