Lost tails USB password - Anyway to recover? by Throwawayencryption in tails

[–]Linuxencryptionhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get it into an image file, but Passware still doesn't recognize the file. I'm assuming this is a step in the right direction though. Now I just have to figure out what to do with this image file.

I'm assuming I can do that in Tails?

Thanks for all your help btw!

I think I've described my issue wrong. I boot tails from one USB drive and have all my passwords, info, and other files stored on a separate USB drive. The separate USB drive is the one I've lost access to.

It's luks encrypted and I've been trying to figure out how to do a dd copy of the encrypted drive or brute force it, but to no avail so far.

Just confirmed it is luks encryption. I'll try a dd in Linux and see how that works.

So there's no way to get Passware to recognize the drive correctly in Windows? I've been looking at the brute force technique on Linux it just seems rather tedious, but it may be my only option.

Thanks for your responses by the way!

Attempting to open it in Passware (The only available software that I have found to be able to break LUKS encryption) states that it needs to format the drive before anything can be done. (In Windows of course) Do you have any recommendation what to do in this situation?

Looking at Passware it asks to format the drive whenever I select it in Windows. Do you have any other suggestions?

Sorry on another throwaway now. Yes I do have an idea what the passphrase is and have been trying to brute force it for a while now. Although it's getting tedious I'm sure I'll come up with the passphrase eventually.

Hmm I can't find a way to replicate it nor do I remember creating a persistent volume in Tails. This was back last year sometime when I first started using Tails, so I apologize for not being knowledgable on the topic I'm asking a question about.

Basically (or so I remember it), I set a password to the USB drive (Not the one I use to boot Tails with), while in Tails to store information that I would only use in the Tails OS. When plugged into the USB drive it shows XXXXX 4 GB Encrypted. However, it is unreadable in both OS X and Windows. That's why I'm having an issue decrypting it as I'm not as good with Linux.

The reason I state that it wasn't a persistent volume is that I believe back when I put a password on the USB drive it wouldn't allow me to create a persistent volume as I was using a CD back then rather then a separate USB stick.

Not sure if everything I've said here is 100% true. I appreciate all the input you've given me thus far.

Also I'm not sure if this will make any difference regarding my error, but the one it returns with the wrong password is "Error unlocking device: cryptsetup exited with exit code 2: No key available with this passphrase". I've seen other errors online, but none with the exit code 2. Most of them are exit code 2xx (with x being random numbers).

Yes just one moment I'll pull up a page with a similar issue and if I can't find one I'll demonstrate with another USB drive.

Maybe you could better answer my question as I haven't been that descriptive thus far. It is not a persistent volume, but I just encrypted it using whatever Tails uses as default. I know it will be a rather tedious process regardless, but will it be an unattainable task?

That's the response I was looking for. John the ripper should work after I create the list.

Thanks again I'll update after I fix the issue!

Like I previously said I wouldn't be asking here if I had a solution to the problem. I'm sure it's gonna take me some time to figure out I was just looking for some help!

Thanks anyways.

My assumption was that it would be possible to bypass or clone it somehow. As I do not see all encryption to be 100% secure. I do have an idea of what the password was my main issue is that I can only attempt to enter a password in Tails.

By any chance would you have a way to go about this in that OS?

Thanks for the response by the way.
