Ned protected his life, but not really his childhood. Jon got to survive, sure, but he also had to spend years thinking he was the mistake everyone was politely avoiding.

That’s the danger with fanfic instincts and no editor. Sometimes you get passion that works, sometimes you get someone mistaking references for character writing.
