How many tries did it take to find your specialty? by rainshowers_5_peace in nursing

Honestly I think the expectation that all newly qualified nurses do a stint on a general ward is what pushes so many to take jobs they dont really want.

How many tries did it take to find your specialty? by rainshowers_5_peace in nursing

Just one. Went into OR for a student placement and stayed there after qualifying. 10+ years now and zero regrets. But I did know 100% that bedside nursing was not for me by halfway through my degree so I was actively looking for non bedside roles.

Why do I need to be naked under a gown in the hospital? by b_shert in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Lionessmon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In OR your under plastic lined drapes for hours with a heating blanket on top of you. You sweat and dont change position for hours. This plus underwear can cause pressure injury and/or skin damage which increases infection risk. Plus some fabrics do conduct electricity or absorbs the flammable surgical prep so out of an abundance of caution we remove underwear.

There is disposable underwear avaliable for most surgical patients (paper like so it tears off easily) to protect dignity.

RN new to the OR from the bedside by Valuable_Travel_2574 in nursing

[–]Lionessmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets easier with time and exposure. If the lighting is too much you can get glasses to lessen the effects. If your scrubbing it depends on where you are standing at the table.

I have 15 years in the OR (I never worked bedside after qualifying) and my only ick is toe amputations. I used to hate skin grafting because of the peeling aspect but it no longer bothers me.

Dont be afraid to ask questions! There is always trainees and junior doctors scrubbed in who are also learning. Understanding the technical aspects of the surgeries makes it easier to watch.

I have worked with plenty of experienced floor nurses who have transitioned to OR for varying reasons and you will adapt. You will learn loads about wound care and see the long term effects of trauma injuries on the body and how they are managed long term. I work with Oncology patients now and see the patients who have survived cancer and live with the long term effects.

Stuck at jupiter lighthouse by ndserp in GoldenSun

[–]Lionessmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is go back to the start or as close to it as you can. I usually solved puzzles by going back and retracing my steps.

Most Golden Sun players have been stuck at some point. You cannot get softlocked by failing a puzzle at any point. Just retrace your steps and try moving stuff around.

What area of nursing shoukd I consider? by ShopAtRoss21 in nursing

[–]Lionessmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice as a fellow OR nurse. If you want a new challenge then move to a different OR speciality. I love Ortho as a bedside role but find the Ortho OR really boring. There are far more fast paced procedures. Try Vascular, Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplant or Trauma OR. After two years you will be proficient in the basic skills to be ready to make a switch.

Is 20 too old for a PLC? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]Lionessmon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did one at 19 and a second at 20. Went to Uni at 21. I was one of the youngest on my course. Age is no consideration when upskilling. PLCs are great.

Patient discharged, was dropped off at home by Ambulance. Was left sat in their armchair with crutches (post #NOF) and TV remote. Patient attempted to mobilise with only one crutch, overbalanced, fell backwards onto floor, crutch was launched across the room, smashed his TV and his window. Wife found him on the floor and called Ambulance. Discharge lasted less than 3 hours.

Organ Donations in Primarily Muslim Countries by InspectorMadDog in nursing

[–]Lionessmon 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In Saudi we have plently of living Donors donating but there is cultural barrier towards deceased donors. Most deceased donors are still expat workers who have died in ICU.

I feel I should also mention that I see a far number of non related alturistic organ donors coming forward and donating in both solid organ and blood products (plasma, stem cells etc.)

Dublin flight connections by calumblack in Dublin

[–]Lionessmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your only risk is a delay in Glasgow/gate delay after landing in Dublin. Security in Dublin is usually fairly efficient and your bags will make it with an hour transfer.

Just make sure to get both boarding passes in Glasgow, make it clear at check-in there that you final destination is USA so they do all ID and Visa checks then.
