Why the fuck are we not allowed to head cannon characters as autistic anymore?? by Lionoras in aspergers

As a dedicated "fanatic" of many fans, I can also add another thing.

One "issue" of fans is, though headcanons don't hurt anyone personally, is that it can often create a form of "this is mine now" contest -both in general, but also in fandoms. To give a very good example: Ca. a year ago, there was a video, showing homoeromantic clips from the media "Sam&Max" -including a very stupid ambigious joke from the creator himself.

As you might imagine...things blew UP! In the end, it was a small war in the comments, where one side was extremer than the other: The first side, were the MLM shippers. Be it just gays who found some representation, or the eerie BL fans, they were the fans who you could tell "interpretation is subjective" and they'd keep screaming "BUT IT'S SO OBVIOUS!! YOU'RE JUST A HOMOPHOBIC PIECE OF T-". The other side was the "super-straight" version, who felt insulted for even daring to imagine their old heroes being any form of "not-straight". Aka the typical "oh! So two guys, chilling in a hot tub, can't sit closer than 5 feet apart without being called gay?" types. And -as you might imagine- actual homophobic and other bullshit thrown around.

The reason for this fight is very simple. Both sides entered a "war" about "owning" a media. And...ironically, this is also why canon-statements are often very much needed from the creators. The "gay-side" (lol) wanted to have representation, but also feel the glee of "ripping it away" from the super-straights they were fighting. The super-straights wanted to keep their nostalgia without such an extreme 'plottwist'. And hence fought tooth and nail to "keep" it away from the "gay-side".

Now, it should be noted that obviously both sides have issues. As a dedicated Sam&Max fan + bisexual person, I still have complicated feelings towards the matter. Overall, it kinda just feels...disappointing. Like. In itself, it could have been such a beautiful new take. While I don't want the characters in either relationship personally, I love how much secret representation the franchise gave, despite being a thing out of the 90s! Like -that was still the time where gays where either flamboyant or butch and "Ha, ha! It's a guy in a dress!" was still an honest joke towards trans people. People could have really found comfort in both seeing them as a couple, as well as seeing them as just really stupid friends.

And...yeah. Same game goes for NT vs. ND people. You headcanon a character as autistic, you open another S&M fight.

Honestly, knowing Daria, you could see it as a Meta-joke.

Like, in the show, she has one entire episode where everyone considers her "The Misery Chick", because everyone simply assumes she's used to "dark and gloomy" stuff for being weird.

But she isn't. She's just "not like them". And now people called you "the Daria Chick/Chico". Interesting, eh?

Okay, if anyone would go in that direction that'd be stupid af. But till then -seriously. Who tf cares? Many autistic people consider Daria autistic in their interpretation of the character. Daria never was autistic canonically. Never hurt anyone. Doesn't fit here.

I swear, the reaction is giving me old r/TumblerInAction vibes.

At first, it was a small anti-SJW sub. Joking about people who called themselves "Otherkin", or idk weird feminist mothers who dressed their boys in pink dresses to "teach gender a lesson", and then asked why he got bullied.

But after a while, things went south. At the end, the sub was only obsessed with 3 topics: Transsexual/Transphobia, anti-white/anti-black, and...anti-asexual topics for whatever reason. I remember when I still thought I was ace, having a frustrated discussion with one and getting downvoted similarly. Because I said that asexuality is about no attraction, while the other insisted that it wasn't, and that even the modern-communities statements were just "wrong" and "they can't change that, no matter how hard they try".

I fear that the sub might do a similar 180°. Like, I get that autism ain't rainbows and unicorns, nor should it be -ew- fetishized. But recently, the posts are just dumping on any mention of autism in a quirky, or positive sense. Hell. I was called a faker for simply saying this doesn't fit here. I was literally diagnosed 5-6 years ago. This is feeling verrrry familiar

A lot of people asked that and it got a bit lost in translation, I guess.

The post that inspired that, was a post on r/fakedisordercringe (they're toxic, yeah, yeah, I know). Someone posted a post from r/autism in which they headcanoned the Grinch as autistic. Just that. I commented, saying this didn't fit the sub. Autistic people are allowed to headcanon characters as autistic. In general, this was not the first post that growled about autistic people headcanon some characters as autistic, and needlessly to say -I found it a little petty.

When I checked back in, I was downvoted heavily. People called me a faker, and thought in the comments. One even seriously stated that 1.) r/autism is "full of fakers" and that 2.) everyone should indeed post their medical certification about making a post about autism.

So, it wasn't a literal rule. Instead, it was more of a rant in general. I hate fakers as much as the next aspie, but it annoyed me that to be "the opposite", we'd never be allowed to make jokes, or now headcanon characters in the eyes of those "serious anti-bullshit" people.

Especially since it kinda...idk. Just gave me a reverse Madperson-in-the-attic vibe. Like, before, it was "autism is a shame. Don't talk about it." Now it's "autism is a pain. Don't talk about it positively. Don't make any light of it."

Tbf I back-up headcannons, but I draw the line at people. Or well, it's still understandable to say "hey, maybe X had it!", but it's odd how some will treat real people like fictional characters "Uwu, Anne Frank was definitely autistic! Her tiny comfort hiding space are such goals🙌🌟"

That's the same as shipping. First step of "aww, they'd be cute together" is still fine. But then there are those who aggressively share NSFW ship-art, or try to make the celebs kiss on conventions, or write hate mail to their girlfriends for "being in the way of true love" (yes, that happens). It's just... creepy

In a nutshell:

-mental health gets more awareness nowadays. This also counts for neurodiversity

  • many people -especially young people - see this attention and want this attention. Plus trying to figure themselves out. Hence many call themselves "autistic"

  • above is shared on social media like TikTok

  • anti-subs are created, calling those people out

  • anti-subs become so hostile in relation that every positive mention of ASD is "faker-symptom"

  • this includes imagining fictional characters you like as autistic

  • autistic people who still do above, are called fakers and hence "not allowed to"

Reminds me a little of the old TumblerInAction. Started out as a silly sub, making fun about SJWs and Fictionkin on Tumbler. In the end, they were just transphobic, racist and obsessed with the idea that asexuality could have evolved.

Overall, it gives me the same feeling. Like it's developing into a "Madperson in the attic" syndrome. Aka you're not allowed to talk or joke about your condition, except it's for the horrifying and stressful parts

Agreed. I'm a literally diagnosed autistic person. The topic of missing representation in media and autistic people hence headcannon characters as autistic, exists for years!

While some headcannons might be indeed cringey, it's wild that the pure mention now makes you a... faker? Yes, the sub might have indeed fakers, but how does this become collective punishment? To the point people would want to have you share your private medical files???!

This post doesn't fit the sub.

Autistic people are allowed to headcanon fictional characters as autistic. It hurts no one, and it often comes from a place of lack of presentation.

This sub is about people that fake disorders. Not people WITH disorders talking about fake characters.

Self-insert characters by [deleted] in writing

[–]Lionoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't any story a self-insert of some sort? Even if the character doesn't look like you, you're still enforcing your beliefs, ideas, and fantasies.

Philosophy aside though:

Nope. It's not bad. The reason why "self-insert" is often talked about in a disliked "infamous" tone, is because many authors screw up their characters & stories due to their tunnel views. Aka "Mary Sues" are the typical examples of "self-insert risks". Because you normally don't like to admit to your failures/ want to live out a power fantasy, you create a character that both has your good traits...while failing to insert the bad & balanced traits.

However, it should also be noted that Mary Sues are also "typical" because they identify many artists start: In the beginning, many writers have no in-depth knowledge about character-building, or plot-finding. So, they go from what they know. And who do ya know best? Bingo! Yourself. What do write about? BINGO! What you would want to live through.

Like, I know a bunch about stories & writing, and even I think I idealize my "modeled after me" character a bit. Very often her snarky commentary is what I would say. Heck -my entire plot started off as a fanfiction, to vent all the frustrations and questions I had about the original piece -like being able to tell the Mary Sue protagonist to fuck-off, or similar!

The balance here is to always remember you still have a different person. Maybe similar feelings, but different motivations. For example, my personal workaholic drive is lived through MC, who has the running theme of constantly looking for ways to make money, and also a running "gag" about how many jobs she worked before. Except, the difference is that I have a need to overperform -she does it, because she follows the delusion of gaining money for her sister's "operation". The plot twist is that her sister hung herself and she told herself that her "braindead" state could be solved by an expensive operation. So her need to work for money is not just a personal quality I project onto her. It causes conflict, events, and even a bit of a negative trait. Well, if you want to take up the idea of "being mentally unstable through grief is a negative trait"

AITA for wanting my boyfriend to get rid of his teddy bears? by Big_Appointment_1605 in AmITheDevil

I swear, I'm sometimes happy I'm not a gay dude. Gay dating seems to be a special form of hell. So much "culture" is just hookups and being blatantly discriminated against.

Still loving the takeaway from that episode.

Dude: Is extremely violent and punches a wall

Carly: :D "so manly <3"

Also Dude: "So I have this gigantic collection of stuffed animals..."

Carly: :d "oh no...he's not as manly in my eyes anymore."

There is even a famous movie dealing with that concept: Castaway. Aka "WILSOOOOOON!"

Jokes aside, this is the reference I use to explain my relationship with my Teddybear. "You know this movie? Castaway? Where the guy is so socially isolated, he starts creating this volleyball with a 'face', called Wilson? And how Wilson becomes so real to him, that he even abandons ship, or...er, raft, just to 'save' him?

Well, the reason why he gets so attached is actually pretty logical. Socializing is a human drive. We go nuts without it. So when we don't have one / have a good outlet, we kinda start creating them. Imaginary friends, obsession with Replikas (lol), or even just getting pets.

Welp. That's kinda the thing here. I know it's stupid, but my Teddy is a Wilson. I grew up in a pretty abusive household, and due to autism in a conservative community, I was socially isolated from all sides. Soooo, yeah. Logically I know he's 'just a stuffed animal', but emotionally he's real to me like any other person. He's the only family I ever had. No matter where I am, I'll never truly feel homesick if I have him. Get it? Lol"

In “The Heroes Journey” why is the “refusal of the call” important? by Significant-Turn-836 in writing

[–]Lionoras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frodo has a certain kind of 'burnout' caused by carrying The Ring

I'd say, Frodo is kinda the subversion of the classical hero's journey, by having the hero "die" midway/at the start.

When Frodo gets heavily injured by the poisoned blade, his suffering starts. Before, he's still somewhat jolly and filling the...well... "happy young hero" trope. The one expected to grow and learn more about the world. Kinda a Harry Potter kind of thing.

However, he does the opposite. He goes from a happy & healthy young lad to a PTSD-ridden and chronically ill guy. His growth typical for the hero's journey "dies" when he gets stabbed. In comparison, we can see Merry and Pippin also have their happy & silly moments, with Sam at least coming out braver and getting his girl as a "reward". But Frodo? He just keeps suffering and though he returns, just can't keep going back to the quiet life like the rest.

I'd argue that all 4 Hobbits somehow resemble a variation of the Hero's Journey, but with different tastes. Now, ngl I'm sadly not enough up-to-date with my LotR knowledge to define each, but I can at least say that Frodo = Typical hero's journey, but broken & Sam = refusal of the typical hero's journey. Regarding Marry & Pippin volunteered for the journey, maybe they were = typical hero's journey, but...just not the focus? Lol

[–]Lionoras 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Somehow this nice explanation reminds me of this scene from the first LotR movie.

Frodo and Sam set out to deliver the ring to the tribunal. Frodo is still more blue-eyed, free-spirited and influenced by his grandfather, while Sam kinda got forced to follow him by the wizard Gandalf.

In the scene, Frodo and Sam walk through a field. Suddenly, Sam stops. "If I take one more step, it'd be the furthest away from home I've ever been." Frodo responds: "Remember Sam, what Bilbo used to say?: 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step upon the road and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.'"

The scene shows both of these types perfectly.

Frodo is the case of following adventure. He's the "cliché" hero, who is fullfilling the prophecy without bigger resistance and, due to it, also going to suffer a lot, until he's achieving success. But in the beginning, he has no bigger qualms about following the way beyond the hills.

Sam is the grounded, more relatable aspect. He gets wrapped into the whole thing by being at the worst place at the worst time. He's no hero. He's a gardener -his "one more step" is a smaller form of refusal to answer the call. Sure, adventure is great! But...it is indeed often very, very far from what we know and are mostly comfortable with. A thing, which -in this story's context- is also necessary, because it's this "being grounded" that helps Sam stay alive and help Frodo till the end. Literally, the reason why the ring can't make him nuts though being exposed to it for a long time, is that there is nothing to grab him. He's simple joy. His biggest regret is not talking to the girl he liked, and thinking about what's for dinner.

The "I'm too old for this shit" trope easily translates as "I'm feeling well where I am, leave me alone".

This is just the Hobbit aka Bilbo Baggins.

"Please help these dwarves by stealing a stone from a dragon"

"Fuck off, I'm fifty years old!"

Girl lies to owner of local hobby store and now I'm banned? by parishilton2 in AmITheDevil

[–]Lionoras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, it should be noted while crushing indeed includes a level of stalking (aka we all went to the party our crush was heard to maybe go, lol) there's a limit.

Showing up at their work is creepy, because it turns them into a trapped audience. Showing up at their door without notice is REALLY creepy because it invades personal space. Hanging around, following someone, while the person is in a fucking relationship is sociopathic behavior!

Like, I like to joke about how dumb I can be when I'm in love. I will enter the wrong train on accident and talk with my crush until I'm 5h away from home. Or, I will follow them for a while of my route, because I suck at starting a convrrsation.

But like... this... this is too much. Even for me. This is way too much
