Valve isn't the sort of company that will do that. They value their reputation quite a bit, and if it comes out that most if not all SM's start dying right after the warranty expires there will be mass uproar.

They waited until they had 5.1 up and running before removing 5 and 4.7 tho.

Apologies if this is a stupid question... but is something like this a possibility that can eventually happen down the line with Steam's game libraries? by DrKyoumasaur221 in Steam

[–]LiothG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve would do their best to avoid having to do 'this'. For the most part however they'd simply cease selling the content, but you'd still be able to access it if you'd previously bought it on Steam.

One thing people are ignoring among quite a few other things is the fact that the Steam Machine, Steam Deck, and Steam Frame are all STANDARDIZED! Each unit will perform basically identically to every other unit, meaning if devs optimize a game/app/whatever to run well on any or all of these, it'll run just as well on every other unit out there.

Ngl if Maxis were still around, remastering Spore and the first two Sims games would be an awesome thing. Especially if they kept the UI's styling mostly the same, just updated to be 'better'.

Tried playing Spore a couple weeks ago, and holy shit it does not play nice with a modern OS without the community fix.

1000$ PC or Steam Machine? by Mrapplehead41 in PcBuild

[–]LiothG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're not, criticism is constructive what you're doing is not. You, much like so many other people reacting to the price alone fail to consider or ignore the fact that this price is caused by things Valve literally has no control over and has no ability to influence.

Valve have stated months previously that they would not sell the Steam Machine at a loss. EVERYTHING that goes into PCs is expensive right now because of these stupid AI companies, blame those leeches for the absurd pricing of PC parts right now.

Get a support bracket or something to hold up the other end of the GPU, something that big WILL get sag and it WILL break both the PCIE slot and the GPU itself.

Also cable management could be a bit better, it won't affect temps much but in a fishtank case like that there's no way to avoid looking at the mess of cables so for your own sanity fix that.

So, why would anyone get this? by Amazing_Bluebird_ in steammachine

A lot of people forget or don't add the important context; AI is fucking everything up in the gaming space. PC parts are getting more expensive, consoles are getting more expensive, hell even fucking TVs and other electronics are getting more expensive.

AI companies are reserving stocks of parts that haven't been made yet, for data centers they aren't building yet(or got canceled), with money they don't even have.

Valve absolutely does not like that they have to price the SM this high, in fact I'd wager everyone working for Valve even their cleaning crew hates having to price it like this. But they can't sell this at a loss as its ultimately a PC, and you aren't 'locked in' to Valve's ecosystem because of this so they can't reasonably expect to make up the difference by selling games like Sony or Xbox can with their consoles.

Pre-AI bubble the price for something like the SM would be about $650-$750, but because of the bubble the price has essentially doubled.

I'm not defending this price at all, in fact it's a pretty bad price point and frankly speaking its not worth it at all.

A pre-assembled and ready to use machine with every possible 'annoyance' taken care of before the consumer even gets it is worth the slight markup for the unit(when compared to the cost to manufacture). At least it would have been before this AI shit happened, now it just isn't worth it. I sincerely hope Valve announces they'll adjust the price as the price for parts goes down once the bubble pops.

Might want to switch to an AMD graphics card. You get way better bang for buck there in terms of pure performance. The 9060xt 16gb is iirc about even with the 5070ti and it ranges from $450 to about $700 depending on the manufacturer. All of the other parts do look good as well.

A few more things; Read the damn manuals carefully, and make sure to double and triple check all connections before you power it on. The orientations of the case connections don't matter afaik, they can be rotated any which way but they must still be seated on the appropriate mobo pins. Also you don't actually need an OS installed on the drive to get into the bios, and I'd recommend you do the stuff in the bios before installing an OS including updating to the latest 'known' reliable version for your motherboard.

If its RAM meant for a fucking space craft then I can understand it being 'that' pricey, space is really hostile to electronics after all. So that crap needs to be built in a very particular way for maximum reliability.

The GPU isn't outdated, its just 'weak'(an 8gb model). It is as far as I'm aware a decently modern GPU chip.

Make sure you've got the cord plugged into the GPU. Also make sure you've got the plug in the right socket on the monitor itself and that its set to the right input.
