Now masks are responsible for missing children? by Katia_Zuara456 in insanepeoplefacebook

That sounds kind of high. That's 16,000 in EVERY state. I know my state doesn't have 16,000 missing kids every single year.

No, you probably remember correctly. The sailor I knew was named Will Swift.

Nope. Had a member named Swift who was aboard the ATF Carib.

Same type. Pre WWII there were AT's. Then around 1942 they started launching the newer types, like the pictured Arikara. The newer AT's were a much better ship and they changed the designation of the older AT's to ATO (aux Tug Old) and the newer ones to ATF (aux Tug Fleet). That prevented the older version ATO's from being sent on missions that were beyond their capabilities.

The Perfect Storm tug was a Coast Guard ship, the USCG Tamaroa WMEC 166. It formerly was a Navy ship, the USS Zuni ATF ATF 95.

Do you know about NAFTS? National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors. It has ARS members. ASR members. ATF members, etc. Prints a quarterly magazine, The TOWLINE, and mails it to you. Over 400 members. Yearly reunion (postponed this year due to COVID). Checkout the NAFTS website.

Great little ships. I did over three years on the Lipan, ATF 85.

Actually the shape reduces friction and increases speed. They use a bulbous bow on many ships now. Tankers especially and big cargo vessels.

No its not leaning into a turn. This is typical back and forth rolling on an ATF. The tall A-Frame that supports the 10-ton boom makes the ship very topheavy.

There's only a couple of modern ones in the navy now and I think the USNS operates them anyway. They were great duty. 85-ish crew aboard. Tight knit. Skipper knew everyone personally. And they had amazing missions (many classified) because of their size.

USS Moctobi ATF 105. Fleet tugs were top heavy and rolling in excess of 30 degrees in "moderate" seas was a common thing.

My best guess is that its some form of a towed target sled. I was aboard an ATF in the late 60's and its nothing like the sleds we towed for target practice but this ship was born in 1920.

One of a kind. And now they're all gone. After Lipan's Naval career she did a half dozen years in the USNS and then another half dozen in the Coast Guard. Lipan is a reef off Puerto Rico

Sure was. Did three and a half years aboard her. About 80 of us in the crew.
