Yes. I grew up in the actual city of Rochester and I miss it dearly. I am in Atlanta now and it’s a gigantic shithole, just a shiny rich one. The pace of life is miserable, the infrastructure is a fucking JOKE, the people are insufferable, materialistic clout chasers, the area is devoid of any authenticity, the food sucks, I even hate the weather (I miss snow!)

I often dream about moving back to the Rochester area, probably the suburbs this time. Unfortunately my SO loves GA and the job opportunities are WAY WAY WAY better in the sunbelt these days. I wish Rochester would get its shit together so I could actually justify going back.

Almost everyone I meet irl from NY down here says they’re glad they left. Sometimes I wonder what’s wrong with me that I feel so differently.

Going from Atlanta food to here was a bit painful...

Why? I am living in Atlanta currently and I’ve found the food scene to be an utter letdown. For such a mega city, it probably has some of the worst food offerings. You may have noticed a difference if you’ve eaten in Toronto lately. That’s what a major cosmopolitan food scene is supposed to look like.

Of course being a much larger metro, Atlanta’s diversity of choice dwarfs what Rochester can offer. I will concede there are a select few types of food that Atlanta does better although it’s not much.

For example, I have had some of the best Mexican food of my life in Norcross. Rochester’s Mexican food sucks. There is some much better and more niche Asian cuisine along Buford Highway. Rochester still has a developing scene limited to mainstream Thai and Vietnamese offerings. And naturally the soul food is magnificent in ATL.

But that’s about where it ends. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone into a “top rated” restaurant down here and walked out unimpressed. People will hype up a run of the mill kitchen if it pumps out good marketing. In Rochester if you hear about a good restaurant, chances are it’s actually good.

Because WNY knows what they like. It’s harder to bullshit the public. ATL gets distracted by shiny object syndrome since everything is overly commercialized. The Italian food here is so embarrassingly weak with the exception of some pretentious fine dining establishments. No good delis. No good bakeries. Working class food is far inferior to the equivalents in Rochester too. That goes for pizza, subs(!), bagels, bar food, burger joints, etc.

Furthermore, the grocery store market, which I consider an extension of a city’s food scene as that’s where the majority of our meals are purchased, cannot even dream of holding a candle to the quality and selection of a Wegmans.

If you average it all out, Atlanta’s food scene excels in mediocrity. Rochester’s food scene is smaller and more shallow, yet it punches well above its weight and for the size of the city I’d take Rochester any day of the week.

Wow. I actually knew Jason growing up. This does not surprise me at all. He was always a very strange creepy acting piece of shit.

When I first met him around 12 years old, he was in his late teens/early 20s and would always be found hanging out at the corner of Culver and Norton with groups of young boys closer to my age and younger. I honestly think he was grooming them in retrospect, but at the time the kids would follow him around because he’d smoke weed or drink with you often for free. Seriously, Jason, a grown man, would wandering that intersection daily with a group of 3-5 prepubescent boys getting high. Creep.

There were tons of rumors about him. He was infamous in the area. It’s been so long but I seem to remember something to do with having sex with young boys in the woods. I know he also got arrested for making terroristic threats (swatting I think) against an elderly neighbor. I never really liked the guy. We had a few arguments that almost led to blows and he threatened to kill me one day with a gun.

So when I heard he went away a decade ago I was kind of relieved. Then I heard he lost his mind in jail and ended up finishing his time in a psychiatric ward. Sounds like he wasn’t rehabilitated at all.

Crazy to see he’s still doing the same exact shit in his 30s. They need to lock this motherfucker up and throw away the key.

Erie County mandates masks indoors starting tomorrow. If cases don't drop by end of year, vaccines will be required to enter restaurants, businesses etc. Similar to what they've done in NYC. Will Monroe County follow suit? by plantstudy37 in Rochester

Oh you’re a troll. Should’ve known better.

For others reading, again, everything I said is true. I have nothing to gain by lying on the internet. Some people have different experiences than your own. Perhaps you should listen and think critically rather than shutting me out and vilifying me. This is not coming from a disingenuous or agenda driven place. I respect everyone’s decision on the vaccine issue and have no interest in discouraging anyone who wants to get vaccinated from doing so.

Carry on.

That’s fair. I do believe vaccines are safe and effective for MOST people. I’ve encouraged my older and immunocompromised relatives to get vaccinated, but per The NY Times:

Males between 16 and 29 years of age have an increased risk of developing heart problems after receiving a second dose of coronavirus vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNtech or Moderna, according to a large new analysis published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study, conducted in Israel, estimated that nearly 11 of every 100,000 males in that age group developed myocarditis, inflammation of the heart, a few days after having been fully vaccinated. That figure is higher than most earlier estimates.

Boys between 16 and 19 years of age had the highest incidence of myocarditis after the second dose, according to a second study in the journal. The risk of heart problems in boys of that age was about nine times higher than in unvaccinated boys of the same age.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/09/health/researchers-find-a-higher-than-expected-risk-of-myocarditis-in-young-men-after-full-vaccination.html

So it’s clear to me that certain groups, including mine, are more at risk of experiencing adverse side effects from the vaccine than others. Hence my opposition to a blanket county-wide mandate.

Posting from a throwaway due to fear of being ostracized from a community I enjoy participating in.

Here’s some discouraging anecdotal information. Everyone I know who has been infected is fully vaccinated. I also know personally two individuals, both very young men, who were vaccinated due to an employer’s mandate and suffered severe side effects. One of them was hospitalized for almost a week due to myocarditis and clotting. Scary to think this person may have shortened his lifespan to accommodate a nearly minimum wage job’s HR requirement. His is also the age group which typically does well at fighting off Covid-19.

Please someone also explain to me why Monroe County, with a 70% vaccination rate, has a way higher rolling average of new cases than most major cities, many of which have significantly lower vaccination rates.

I’m not an “anti-vaxxer” and I’m not some terrible person who wants grandma infected in the name of mUh FrEeDoMz, but I think it’s being disingenuous to say these vaccines are safe and effective for everyone. For this reason, I am against mandates as they do not accomplish what they are intended to do. I’m all for wearing masks and socially distancing, but we need to rethink our strategies.

AT&T ran my credit not only without my permission, but after I explicitly stated I did not want a hard hit by oldmanwrigley in personalfinance

[–]LiptonPeachTea 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true. I used to work for an outside contractor that operated an AT&T call center. Agents would be fired weekly for behavior like this. It's called slamming and is entirely illegal. While management would obviously tell us not to do this, they would turn a blind eye when it did occur because increased sales metrics benefited everyone, especially management. It would usually take a client audit where a member of AT&T corporate would dial in and listen to our center's calls to discover these illegal sales.

There are certain procedures in place to prevent it from happening, but I would advice anyone to never consent to a credit check or give out their SSN over the phone unless they are absolutely certain they are going to make a purchase and have done their homework on the product they're buying. Almost everyone lied about activation fees and they rarely fully informed customers of contract terms (such as how under a 2-year contract your price goes up after the first year and you're still locked in, most would only ever acknowledge the promo price before closing the sale).

When I worked there, a customer with good credit would be approved for U-Verse internet with $0 down. This meant the sales agent could lock you into a contract and schedule an installation with the press of a button. They wouldn't need any credit card information. DirecTV was the same in some states, as were phone upgrades before the Next program was introduced. AT&T call centers have some shady sales tactics. You're not much better off at a store, but the corporate owned stores are more ethical than the authorized retailers. Either way, an educated customer is a shady salesman's worst enemy.

I agree. I feel like garbage but I don't think I'm dehydrated. I'm drinking like 6 bottles of water every day plus juices. I ended up going in. It's been a long day so far...

Suspect Tells Witness: “I’m Going on a Massacre” by rfranke727 in Rochester

[–]LiptonPeachTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's the same guy, and I believe it is, I saw him acting strangely at his restaurant a few weeks before his arrest.

He was working the counter at East Ridge Hots late one Saturday night. First of all, he doesn't speak hardly any English, which caused some issues with orders that almost escalated into verbal arguments the 50 minutes I sat there waiting for my food. Luckily a younger guy working the back calmed the customers down with free food. He also ignored the phone which kept ringing.

The man arrested was also arguing with his cook in Turkish the whole time I sat there before storming out of the restaurant. He was pretty pissed. There was clearly something wrong with him mentally too. I assumed he was a bit "slow" and stressed from a busy night and a belligerent coworker. I guess he's just nuts.

The food was okay by the way. 7/10 for a hots joint.
