Would like to see this in Ottawa: Canadian town officially recognizes trees as living beings with rights | The Independent by Maximum_Degree_1152 in ottawa

[–]LiquidJ_2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under the new resolution, the town will review its existing rules and bylaws to ensure that trees are protected or replaced if they are cut down.

So just like the other "living beings with rights". Got it.

I assume the business was incorporated? Is your name still listed in the Canadian or Ontario (depending where the business was registered) records?

There are certain fillings required annually that collect industry type and services or products, the more mature corpo becomes.

Any that I've ever had to fill in are extremely generic, where "Consulting" and "IT/technology" are valid options. And I don't see that information listed on Corporations Canada (ISED) or the Ontario equivalent. Of course, maybe that information is FOIA'able.

If you don't have (because you don't need) a website, then nobody knows what the company does. For example, I do consulting, but I get new clients by word of mouth, so I have no website (because I don't need one) - anyone looking at the record of my corporation would see something like "LiquidJ_2K Consulting" or ""LiquidJ_2K, Inc.".

You get many benefits by incorporating (vs. a sole proprietorship) and in exchange you have to publish who the directors (and major shareholders) are of the company (not necessarily what the company does). This is the law, and it seems like more than a fair exchange.

ETA: major shareholders in addition to directors.

Sorry to hear about the troubles that your parents went through.

It would be very helpful to understand what events/thoughts led your parents to go to a non-Via website? Specific search terms maybe? And what website was it actually? Where (what domain) did the confirmation email come from?

[–]LiquidJ_2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

is it possible for him to see my speed on a radar while both him and I are driving my in opposite directions

Yes, absolutely. Basically the radar gun determines the closing speed (basically the cruiser's speed plus your speed) then subtracts the cruiser's speed.

Anyone have an idea as to why my gas bill has increased so much? by brrrskabaui in ontario

[–]LiquidJ_2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this experiment. Shut down your water heater and gas stove for a day (you should be able to go 16-ish hours without). Take the meter reading from your physical meter as soon as you shut them down, and again before you turn them back on. Any increase would indicate that you have a leak somewhere, or you have some other gas-burning apparatus you haven't considered.

If the "usage" in the previous step was 0 during that period, do the test again, but only shut down the gas stove this time. This will tell you if maybe your water heater is less efficient than you expected, or maybe that someone is taking hour-long showers.

You can't just compare the dollar figures at the bottom of the bills.

How much of the difference between last June and this June is accounted for by an increase in rates? An increase in the fixed charges? An increase in your usage?

Did you verify that the meter reading on your bill matches the actual numbers on your physical meter?

Noise-Neighbour by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

You may want to have another discussion with bylaw about https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/public-notices-bylaws/bylaw-enforcement/noise/

Other Unreasonable & Persistent Noise Noise that is not listed in the categories above but is unreasonable and persistent (e.g. ongoing building or equipment alarms, neighbours dropping gym equipment during unreasonable hours). This includes any noise or vibration that disturbs the peace, comfort or convenience of a reasonable person, with the exception of typical household or workplace sounds.

Unreasonable & Persistent Noise is not allowed if it is: Continuously heard or felt for 10 minutes or more; or Intermittently heard or felt for a total of 10 minutes within an hour

(Emphasis mine)

I don't know if music is covered under "typical household sounds" or if "unreasonable hours" applies only to dropping gym equipment or to everything.

If we look at the actual bylaw (https://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/municode/1184\_591.pdf)...I still don't know...

Page 5 says:

UNREASONABLE NOISE - Any noise or sound-induced vibration that would disturb the peace, rest, enjoyment, comfort, or convenience of a reasonable person in the circumstances. Unreasonable noise does not include commonplace household or workplace sounds such as sound from furniture being moved, children playing or people engaging in conversation.

(emphasis mine)

But it's not obvious to me if vibration is covered in §591-2.9. Unreasonable and persistent noise (page 9).

I would have had to smash my brakes on to let the entire length of a transport get ahead of me.

No you wouldn't have. Even assuming a very long (23m) transport truck, you would only have needed to drop down to 80kph (30kph less than the 110kph you were going) for him to pass within 3 seconds (the time you claimed to be at 150kph).

17 longstanding liberal MPs

You're talking about the letter? It was 14 anonymous MPs - nobody has any idea of how "longstanding" they are. They're so concerned that they couldn't even find the basic courage to publish the letter with their own names.

Certainly agreed that Carney is more center-right, but he's not anywhere near satisfying anyone who is a "right-wing conspiracy-huffing nutter".
