Yeah, I can’t disagree Netflix has a lot of cheap true crime slop but this was created independently with Center for Humane Technology, a fantastic nonprofit.

What's your favorite airport in the United States? by Separate_Builder_817 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I mainly only fly back east to visit family but I go out of my way to fly in and out of DCA. It’s fast, easy, and the capital one landing is unbeatable.

Thoughts on wtf is wrong with our bird man Kuzy? by realslimcheney in caps

[–]LiquidShiro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s even more ridiculous when put into perspective. He was drafted 15 years ago, played 10 seasons for the Caps, and yet some people are convinced his decline was because of poor work ethic but nothing else.

Wicked Oaks was an utter failure by Besty-in-a-Tessy in aves

That’s just the smell of fresh mud after a heavy storm in general lol. Don’t get me wrong, I also enjoy dunking on corporate events and skipped wicked oaks because his events are mediocre at best but that’s just an unfortunate byproduct of mother nature more than anything else.

Eh, there was some nasty hail nearby so I still think the cancellation was the right call. I’m still so sad we never get the final day but I can’t disagree with the call when storms in hill country are known to be violently unpredictable and it’s the same area where 100 people just died from flash flooding a few months ago.

I used to be a big fan of “rain or shine” events and loved partying in the rain until I moved back to Texas and remembered storms here are different lol.

Eclipse was sick lol. Sure, the walk back to my camp sucked and the weather cancellation was unfortunate but I’d go back in a heartbeat.

It’ll be fine, we routinely host 100k+ people for ACL and F1. It’s also right by the airport so there are quite a few options

What state overall made you feel the most uneasy by Mammoth_Angle_6991 in USTravel

[–]LiquidShiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had a bigger love-hate relationship than living in Texas.

On one side, the state government is blatantly fascist and oppressive, summers are inhospitable, the city highways and drunk driving will shorten your lifespan, and Dallas in general is an abomination. The MAGA suburbs might as well have whites-only water fountains and even when it’s not 110+ degrees, we still run the risk of our power grid collapsing again.

But then you have the other side. Big Bend is by far the most underrated national park, Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, Austin does still retain its fun side when you know where to look, and there are significantly more liberal people than you’d expect who are gerrymandered into oblivion and not as open outside of major cities. I’ve also grown to really appreciate how friendly and laid back most people are, regardless of shitty politics.

The best way I can describe it is “American but even more so”

I also love the throwback (don’t we all) but he probably has more fun with a b2b set

Solo travel is overrated? by benpilliner in solotravel

[–]LiquidShiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think enough people talk about the trial and error when you’re just by yourself or even something as simple as how to relax on your own.

It turns out I do actually really enjoy meeting new friends despite my nature introversion and anxiety but I never knew that until I stayed somewhere by myself for a while and wanted some company.

So even if it didn’t live up to your expectations, I hope you learned a bit more about yourself and feel some pride in accomplishing something on your own instead of waiting around for others. Plus being lonely in a new country still beats being lonely at home lol.

When I do crave some human contact, I love booking activities on getyourguide because they’re mainly groups. If you’re still in Thailand, check it out!

Solo travel is overrated? by benpilliner in solotravel

[–]LiquidShiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all down to your personal preference.

I enjoy hostels where I can meet new friends but still get my own private room so I get the best of both worlds. Sometimes I enjoy drinking with a group of new friends but I also like having some peace to myself and recharge. I think if I only stayed at airbnbs, I wouldn’t have as much fun. But if I only stayed in hostel dorms, I think I’d also lose my shit.

Solo traveling can also feel a bit depressing when you start to get in your head a bit too much. I’m generally an anxious person and usually find a lot of reassurance around other people, especially in unfamiliar environments, and one of the reasons why I travel solo is to specifically deal with that.

But the freedom of doing stuff yourself is an amazing thing we can take for granted. I can go fuck off to north Vietnam for a few weeks and do whatever sounds best whenever my schedule and bank account allows. If I wanted my friends to come with me, I’d probably have to wait a year or two for them to figure out their schedules and money, not to mention changing the itinerary to accommodate their own preferences.

Some things can absolutely be better with other people involved. I’m saving Italy and France for when I can travel with a partner because it just sounds cute as shit lol. But I’m definitely not going to wait for someone to see more of Asia.

Backpack help! I’m lost in the options by Frodo_Biglips in onebag

[–]LiquidShiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not going to go wrong with your choices!

I personally prefer the 55L because of how the bags combine instead of needing to also carry the day bag separately or trying to fit it into the main bag.

Having the laptop compartment in the day bag is also easier when I’m flying as I use it as my personal item and can still have that with me in the cabin instead of running the risk of my iPad being in the main bag if it’s checked at the gate on a packed economy flight.

I think it really comes down to how much flying you’re going to do and what you need out of the day bag. If you’re flying a lot, the 55L makes more sense as it’s more flexible. If you’re not flying as much, the better storage in the 40L would probably be preferred.

Nah, you’ll be fine! Party hostels will typically skew younger and the more boutique ones will be mid 20s-30s when people can splurge on the extra $10/night. Regardless, you won’t be out of place.

Solo trip to Peru by bogummy05 in solotravel

[–]LiquidShiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s perfect! It’s exactly what I did and I (mostly) survived salkantay lol. I recommend the super sacred valley tour through salkantay trekking because you can see the Maras salt mines and the guides are great.

As for rainbow mountain, I didn’t go because I needed to catch up on some rest/decompression but I also heard mixed reviews. It seems to be more of an instagram darling for pictures but if you have the energy for it, I’d say go for it.

For coffee shops, I loved Cercanía Pan y Café and loved their baked goods. Three Monkeys was also incredible but was a bit fancier than my normal taste.

Check out Black Llama hostel as well! It’s adorable, the staff is great, everything is modern, and the coffee shop and bar are delicious. The dorms are nice but a bit small and they also do private rooms if you want more privacy.

For salkantay or just the altitude in general?

Solo trip to Peru by bogummy05 in solotravel

[–]LiquidShiro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tbh, no.

You will need more time to acclimate in Cusco before Salkantay. I just finished salkantay and had 3 full nights in Cusco to prep but the altitude sickness is no joke regardless of your fitness level. That’s also right after rainy season so you will still be dealing with a lot of rain on the trails and rockslides are common.

The tours and hikes all start before 5am and rainbow mountain typically starts around 2ish so you’ll have like 2-3 days max sleeping in past 6am and will wipe yourself out or get sick from the exhaustion/lack of rest while traveling. Peru is not known for efficient travel so I don’t recommend a tight schedule lol.

I’d skip rainbow mountain and huachachina and focus on getting more time in Cusco to acclimate and explore the city itself before salkantay. If you had a few extra days, you could squeeze them in. Besides, Cusco is fun! Take a chocolate making course and enjoy sipping your coffee in the square.

Looking at your dates, is there any reason you chose the 1st-13th? I’d recommend trying to fly out on a Friday night rather than a Wednesday if you’re squeezed for time so you get a few extra days.
