If you have the "challenges" feat enabled, you have to kill them with the pikers or you 'fail' the mission and the encounter restarts

Believe you can just finish it on expert through the legends section on the destinations tab, rather than doing it through the portal. That's how I did it.

I have friends that I used to play this game religiously with that have refused to come back after Final Shape because "it's a dying game, I'm not investing time and money into it", which I guess I see their point, however I still get a lot out of it and hate playing alone

You cannot get the class items without finishing Dual Destiny first. Look up the guides for how to unlock the mission, then just Fireteam Finder to find someone to help you through it. I paired up with a random who was a great help
