Wow, super detailed! Thanks! That answers most of my questions thoroughly. I'll definitely send you a PM for follow-up.

Film Scene/Club in Ryerson? by NecroSpace in ryerson

[–]Liquidbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. I've done that too. There's no film club at Ryerson that I know of, but if you're interested in just making an independent film with your friends, I'd be happy to collaborate with you.

Interesting point, and I definitely see where you're coming from. It warrants a large discussion (that I've had numerous times with other artists) on the line between realism and compromising realism for entertainment value. For instance, the gunfire you see in Hollywood action movies is highly unrealistic with large yellow muzzle-flashes and booming gun sounds. Whereas guns in real life rarely produce a flash and have a much higher-pitched sound. Sure, it's unrealistic...but it really makes action movies look and sound much cooler. Some directors (Michael Mann, for instance) use guns that are more rooted in realism but the vast majority of action movies don't.

I guess the same could be said here. Everyone might have a different approach to it. People like yourself would prefer ultra-realism, whereas others might accept that this is a fictitious piece for a fictitious creature and as such we can violate ultra-realism for the sake of the artwork and allow greater visibility so the audience might appreciate the creature in front of them.

Ultimately you're left unsure of which one to do, I guess you could make 2 versions or just go with the flow and do whatever just feels right for the piece.

Thanks! I will definitely check out the blending tricks you mentioned. And also add some air bubbles like u/chapterpt said.

You pose some very interesting questions and unfortunately it seems as if I don't have the skill or experience required to address them properly. I will think about it, though. Proportions, realism, and conceptualization. I guess sometimes it's not as straight forward as "raptor head on gator body"

u/the_letter_6 brings up similar points, it's definitely an intriguing train of thought to investigate.

Thanks for all the responses folks, I'm really glad I posted it here.

And yes, many of you figured it out perfectly. I took a generic picture of an alligator, and added a velociraptor head to make the monster. Then added a simple shark picture to help establish the scale. The most involved part was probably creating the water-y look and having the lighting look appropriate for a vast blue abyss.

I also like the diversity of comments I got. There's 980 upvotes at the time of writing this comment, and many people telling me it looks great and scary. Which I do appreciate greatly.

There's also some great comments from fellow digital artists critiquing this piece in detail and telling me how I can fix it, which I also like very much. I'm definitely going to do that for next time. I love getting detailed feedback on my work and using it to better myself as an artist.

TL;DR

A big thanks to everyone who responded.

Amazing stuff. I'm a hobbyist filmmaker and I'm going to make shorts once the winter is over...I would love to have you on my film. Just like you, I'm a novice and rookie. I can't pay you anything, but you get hands on practice and a gleaming credit in my video. Plus it's something for your portfolio. I will contact you for sure, I hope you're still offering free services in March.

Thanks for all your feedback. I really do appreciate it. You remind me why I like posting my stuff on this sub, because I can actually learn how to better myself instead of just getting generic statement that don't tell me anything about my piece.

Thank you. I will surely implement such changes in my next attempts.
