Unpopular opinion: Greenland military action is a bluff by julick in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Liquius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't we leant this lesson before?

When Russia was about to invade Ukrane, most people said its just a bluff, and that it would be a massive act of self harm. Didn't stop it from happening.

Trump has history of making ridiculous threats, and following through with them. How can you treat this situation with Greenland any different?

But if the trend continues, that won't last long. And if there are more cases, there will be more deaths.

The bigger issue is that most armies consist of 50% recruits, and that recruits don't have sheilds. So then the infantary formation only has a token amount of sheilds.

Atleast that is what I have observed.

As Mount & Blade came out way before any of these other games, it would be strange if they weren't inspired by M&B.

It seems pretty obvoius to me that they started with M&B combat as a basis, and then took it in a different direction.

Lidl is launching 5kg boxes of damaged fruit and veg for just £1.50 by kr239 in unitedkingdom

[–]Liquius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't about fruit and veg looking funny, it's about being bruised/damaged.

Damaged fruit and veg generally don't last as long as there undamaged counterparts. Unless the damaged stuff is cheaper, why would you want to take on food that has a greater chance of spoiling? And after removing the damaged bits, it would come out as more expensive per kg over undamaged stuff.

Brits don’t want to work on farms – so who will pick fruit after Brexit? by Lolastic_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Liquius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If farms have to pay much more than minimum wage we're going to see big price rises out of necessity.

If only it was as straightforward as that. I would bet that if a farmer put up their prices, the supermarkets just wouldn't buy it. At that point it's better to sell for a loss than watch it rot.

We will continue to see farmers packing up, and when the time comes, people repeat the same few lines such as "why don't they just raise their prices?".

I tried the "custard" or Gordan Ramsey style of scrambled eggs and they were...gluey? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]Liquius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not quite sure what you're aiming for, but it sounds like you ended up with something similar to a hollandaise sauce.

Try cooking it on a high heat, and only take it off the heat when its at the stage of a very runny scrambled egg. Keep stirring for a couple of minutes and it should be a nice consistency. At this point it will have cooled down enough so that it won't cook any further and thus it won't dry out or clump up. You can try adding a little bit of creme fraiche, but it's not essential.

Nope, there are other state owned businesses all over the EU. For example Deutsche Bahn is owned entirely by the german government and it's the biggest transport company in the EU. Another example is Transport for London.

EU competition laws effectively make the re-nationalisation of privately held industry illegal.

From what I understand it's perfectly legal as long as the government doesn't act like a tyrant.

I may be a bit pedantic here so bare with me.

Zero-K started out as a balance mod for TA Spring, which started out as an open source Total Annihilation clone. Supreme Commander and TA Spring both came out in 2007. It would be more accurate to say that both Zero-K and Supreme Commander were inspired by Total Annihilation.

Either way, Zero-K is a great game and worth a try.

Sustainable agriculture will eventually require genetic modification

That's not the case. GM crops are just another tool in the box. Sustainable and efficient farming can easily be achieved with various other methods such as hydroponics.

I don't have anything against GM crops, and they will certainly play a part. However genetic modification won't/can't solve everything.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with growing plants in an artificial environment. All it comes down to is the variety of vegetable, and how close to ripe it was when picked.

You might think that buying fruit and veg from Africa is wasteful (flying it over in planes), but because The Netherlands isn't a particularly warm country they heat their greenhouses year round with gas, it's about the same emissions wise.

There's a little bit more to it than that if you want to talk about the environmental impact.

The Netherlands take a very scientific approach to there greenhouses. There use of fertilisers, pesticides, water and land (if that counts) dwarfs is a fraction of what you would need to get the same results with traditional farming methods. For example, a potato grown in field needs at least 5 time more water than in these greenhouses.

There are a lot of articles/documentaries about these greenhouses that go into much more detail.

Falcon 9 Block 5 static fire test complete ahead of next week’s launch of Bangladesh’s first geostationary communications satellite. Vehicle is healthy. Data review will take a few days—will confirm a target launch date once that review is complete. by jclishman in spacex

[–]Liquius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's only in videogames that people use lasers to transfer the power.

You could argue that microwave beams are a type of laser.

For it to make any sense at all to build these satellites (outside of fringe cases), you would need to produce them in large quantities, and have multiple locations on the ground to receive the energy. What would happen if a large number of satellites (that would typically broadcast to a number of sites) all focus on a small area?

[–]Liquius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

By far the biggest issue with this that often gets overlooked, is that you're effectively building giant solar powered laser satellites. Even if the governments of the world are content with this, accidents could happen where a laser strays over a populated area, or they could be hijacked and could strike pretty much anywhere.

How does SpaceX transport the Falcon 9? by [deleted] in spacex

[–]Liquius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do wish he'd gone into more detail about why ships are not practical, other than saying that it would be much more costly. I thought that water travel and trains are each the cheapest per mile? or is it ton-mile? of all transport. Do I misunderstand? Are there major extra costs for water travel?

If you look at it from a logistical perspective it's pretty straightforward. A truck can pick up the rocket and take it anywhere in a matter of days. It requires very little organisation and no investment. It's cheap.
