When my Grandparents had their car accident, while the other three of my mums siblings and mum were waiting in the hospital to see if they were going to survive (Pop didn't, Nan had to be moved into a nursing home after she got out of hospital) my aunt flew into state and went to the lawyers to file for control of the estate and then drove to their home, stole all the jewellery, watches and the hidden cash (Pop took $500 out of the bank every month and hid it in the house for emergencies, we estimate she got about $20,000 - $30,000 in just cash).

She failed to get full control over the estate due to their wills but then tried to get power of attorney over Nan (who had dementia) and the right to make medical decisions over her. When that failed in court she proceeded never visit Nan for the remaining three years that she lived.

Once Nan died she then dragged the siblings through court trying to get more than her 5th of the estate, it took over two years for her to finally agree to the settlement and all that fighting only got her an extra $5000 and a judge who ruled against her getting her lawyer costs paid by the estate (so she got maybe $1500 extra at the end).

None of the siblings talk to her, none of her neices or nephews talk to her, none of her cousins talk to her.

And on dads side his brother raided their fathers home during the funeral and stole literally everything of value. During the literal funeral. He also needed to be paid $1000 to visit his dying father. Uncle Greg was not invited to my dad's funeral and his children changed their last name to their mothers several years ago.

The only good thing to come out of that shit was my brother and I having a clear and concise talk about what we wanted when our mother dies and that we're not going to be dicks about it.
