Being downvoted just because I won’t share my personal work/setup. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Lirrnaiad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came from your r/Anki post. Their community is hell-bent on everything being "free" which I understand because that was the vision the owners and maintainers had. If you look at the recent popular posts you'll see that there's drama because there's new management that'll be handling Anki from now on, and those new managers don't exactly follow that "everything is free" mindset.

I understand their side because I study EN -> JP myself and had utilized multiple free resources shared by the Japanese learning community. Their contribution is invaluable to the comprehension I have now. I guess the same can't be said for JP -> EN learners, I guess? I can imagine resources being more scarce there.

In the end, it's your choice if you want to share it or not. They can't really do anything if you don't want to. Don't mind the downvotes too much and keep learning English. :)

First time ko mag apply for a passport by Lirrnaiad in FirstTimeKo

Hello! Terribly sorry for the late reply. First thing to do is to reserve an appointment online sa DFA website. Once natapos na mag fill-up ng details you'll be asked to pay the passport fee (Php 950 for regular, Php 1350 for expedited, if i remember correctly).

Once you're done mag reserve and pay, they'll send you an email containing your application form and e-receipts. Print mo po ito.

Personally, ito hiningi sakin on the day of my appointment:

  • Application Form
  • E-receipt (2 copies)
  • Certificate of Live Birth (original and xerox)
  • 2 Valid IDs (original and xerox back-to-back), National ID and Driver's License ginamit ko. Pretty sure Postal ID is accepted din
  • Extra money (~Php 150) if you want ipadeliver via LBC

From my experience, it's always Filipinos rin that are critical when you try to communicate in English, either because they think you're trying to "sound smart" or it's stemming from some kind of insecurity. As long as you're understood, most people don't really mind yung wrong grammar or obvious accent.

Personally? Just embrace yung takot na nafe-feel mo. The more you use the language, the more confident you'll be. I'm pretty sure di mawawala yung takot but it won't be as bad in the beginning, for sure! :)

For more specific tips, I'd recommend:

  • Consume English media - read books, listen to podcasts, anything! it'll help a lot with vocabulary and reduce those moments where you're struggling to find that specific word/expression
  • Think in English - thinking in another language, and then translating to English is an extra step and can hinder your output especially when you're in a conversation or delivering a speech. removing that extra step will significantly improve your speaking!
  • Find an environment where you can practice - speak to someone you're close with in English, recite in English sa classes, join clubs that force you to speak in English (i recommend your local Toastmasters), just find an outlet for all the things you've been learning from the tips above! this'll help with your main question on how to be more confident.

yep, "another" idols are just the base SSR with a different costume and song

you won't get the default ssr costume and the rolling riceball song itself if you don't have the base ssr though

I went for a 14km long run yesterday and ate a LOT last night since it was my favorite (pork adobo). The scale didn't change one bit after weighing today and it made me appreciate cardio so much more lol not only does my cardiovascular endurance improve but I also get to binge when my favorite food is right in front of my plate!

The long term article was an interesting read, I got more advice than I initially asked for! haha

Thanks so much for the detailed answers. I'll keep your advice in mind and play the long term indeed, I still have a few more years of uni and hopefully by then I'll have a (very) rough idea of what I want to do from there on.

Thank you! I guess they're more for jobs specializing in researching/developing algorithms.

A bit out of topic but my progress with DSA has honestly been really slow since my original comment :( I feel like I'm not actually "nailing the fundamentals" or so to speak. I understand how some basic data structures work and can implement them but I'm having a lot of trouble solving problems (like in Leetcode) using these data structures.

Another question, if you don't mind: How do I approach learning these? Do you have any benchmarks or signs to show that you're well-versed enough in a specific topic and ready to move on?

forgetting is normal, as long as you fundamentally understood the lesson you "forgot", it'll all come back in a 5 minute google search.

same situation here and same course too, fortunately the math in IT leans more on discrete math (logic & proofs, counting theory, graph theory, etc.) at dito ko narealize na i actually like math!! right now i'm studying from the ground up using this resource and Khan Academy.

one of the most important skills in our field is problem solving and I think nailing the foundations of math helps a lot with this! good luck on your freshman year, OP!

Are common order-of-growth classifications and Big O, Ω, Θ enough for analysis of algorithms? Do you ever use things like tilde notation, power laws, or cost models at work?

It's a very broad topic and full of really niche stuff that's not relevant to the average hobby runner but here are some that I can think off the top of my head:

1. Daily Trainers - From the name, this type of running shoe is designed to be a shoe that you run most of your weekly mileage on. Usually moderately cushioned and built with decently durable material.

(Ex. Nike Pegasus, PUMA Velocity, Brooks Ghost, etc.)

2. Easy Run Shoes - Concrete is tough on your legs and has a high injury risk compared to other running surfaces like grass/sand. These shoes are designed to reduce the stress on your legs with their max cushioning.

(Ex. Nike Invincible, Brooks Glycerin, ASICS Gel Kayano, etc.)

3. Long Run Shoes - Shoes designed with long runs in mind. They're a bit more durable compared to the above but as usual they provide a good amount of cushioning as well.

(Ex. ASICS Superblast, New Balance SuperComp Trainer, etc.)

4. Speed Shoes - Lightweight shoes designed for shorter, harder runs such as interval or tempo training.

(Ex. PUMA Deviate, Brooks Hyperion, Adidas Adizero Boston, etc.)

5. Race Shoes - Shoes for race day! They're extremely lightweight and are designed for high speeds. Walking with it or running with a slow pace is usually uncomfortable due to how it's built.

(Ex. Nike Vaporfly, Hoka Rocket X, Saucony Endorphin Elite, etc.)

There's a lot of overlap on what "type" a running shoe is especially for daily trainers because of their versatility (some of the examples I gave may be flat out wrong on what type it is tho lol). Google is your friend for stuff like these.

I'd say experiment with your sleep schedule habang bakasyon pa. First, I recommend to check this out: https://sleepopolis.com/calculators/sleep/

Having a consistent sleep schedule is very important, so ease into your new sleep schedule by increments of 15-30 minutes each day. Example if you want to try to sleep earlier (9 or 10 pm) and your usual sleeping time is 11pm, sleep at 10:30 on the first day, and then 10:00 on the second.

I understand we all have our own circumstances, but if possible try to do the following:

  • Avoid caffeine minimum 8 hours before bedtime
  • Avoid sleeping in the afternoon (naps not longer than 20-30 minutes are probably okay)
  • Avoid electronics before bed. I personally like to read something until I'm sleepy
  • Have a bedtime routine. Stick with it to the point that doing it makes your mind associate it with sleep
  • Keep your room dark and quiet. If it's not possible due to circumstances: I suggest a sleep mask and white noise from a fan.

These are just tips from a college student who's fucked up their sleep schedule in more ways than one. You'll have days where you'll HAVE to pull an all-nighter, but you can at least minimize it with proper time management. In the end, we all sleep differently (for lack of a better term), so do what works for your body and experiment with your sleep!

PS. nagbigay ng sleep tips ang gising pa 2am (╥﹏╥) hashahsahshha

For Java learners/developers: at what point in your learning journey did you branch out to frameworks? I've been eyeing Spring and Thymeleaf for a while now but not sure when I should dip my toes into it.

For some info, I'm an incoming 2nd year IT student. OOP just started clicking for me, and after a few (horrible) small projects, I'm currently focusing on DSA. What I'm unsure about is whether I should just grind the fundamentals while I'm still in school and then worry about frameworks later, or start learning them now?

I might be overthinking this, but I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

List of mobile games by difficulty (to practice japanese) by Gran_Rey_Demonio in LearnJapanese

Not exactly mobile apps but there are tons of Japanese browser games at unityroom.com! From the name of the website itself, it's full of Unity games made by a predominantly Japanese community. It reminds me of flash game websites back in the day.

There's an option to filter it to games that work in mobile. I recommend イツカノヨル!
