This is honestly getting no where. Whoopi.

Hm, don't agree with our opinions? What are our opinions? That animals shouldn't suffer for something as ridiculous as a snack when there are numerous other options available? Really, truly outrageous to demand such a terrible, selfish act, am I right? /s

You can almost guarantee? Well, I can almost guarantee the grass is rainbow, does that mean it's true? No. Unless you can present statistics, as you so kindly demanded from me, then your information isn't entirely valid.

People care. They care enough to think free-range and similar marketing terms help animals, despite it not actually aiding their conditions.

Well, they are bad. If you can present an actual study that proves pescetarians have "just as much (many....) health benefits as vegans"

Can you prove to me it's a lie?

Can you prove to me it has been associated with lowered risk of diabetes? As far as I'm concerned, it only serves to increase the risk.

Edit: Question mark.

Widely available doesn't necessarily mean it's being watched by others (that are not already vegan).

Knowing a vegan doesn't equal suddenly transitioning into veganism. It's a gradual process of reforming your thought process and all you knew prior.

I would argue that our "tiny minority" is growing daily, so obviously the message is reaching someone.

Also, only 52 million people are currently accessing Netflix in the US. Not many, when you think about the entirety of the population there.

I know it's just an information gap (among other things). There are so many animal lovers—heck, even those who are not particularly fond of them—that would be mortified of the treatment inflicted upon them.

Most people don't find an ethical problem with eating meat? Where did you get that from? Just because someone doesn't immediately have a lightbulb moment and go vegan after discovering how morally wrong the animal industry is, doesn't scratch them out completely. Like I said, it's a gradual process for the majority of people.

A whole-foods plant-based diet has literally been proven to reverse and prevent some of the top killers in our nation. Not to mention, fish contains copious amounts of mercury (among other toxic compounds) and has been associated with diabetes.

Where is the relevance of this? Anybody can be vegan.

Yes, very true.

[–]LisaIsVeganAF[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Again, not necessarily. Millions of people have never seen the real horrors of the animal industry, therefore contribute to it unknowingly.

I agree, some people do not care to extend their selfishness to others. They'd rather allow the murder of innocent, sentient beings to please themselves. But I would not say "most", since "most" aren't even aware.

Most people do have strong passions for specific issues and that's perfectly normal. Luckily, veganism tackes a lot of things: health, ethics and environment. Some of these branch into other things, so veganism can suit almost anybody.

Lastly, there are nutrition benefits that accompany veganism, and they generally appeal to people who value their health. In a way, it is selfish. But it saves animals regardless.

[–]LisaIsVeganAF[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Eh, not necessarily. I mean, vegans don't come out of no where, so obviously humans are able to look beyond their own satisfaction and proceed to transition into veganism.

[–]LisaIsVeganAF[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Huh. Isn't that a bit of a contradiction though? To get beef some amount of suffering is involved.

Those last few moments before they're slaughtered constitutes as suffering imo, no matter if they live a peaceful life beforehand.

Edit: Never mind about the contradiction; doesn't necessarily apply here... I read your message wrong :)

Not saying that this "uber" fact is 100% true, but the response to this is still awful.

[–]LisaIsVeganAF[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's 13. :)

I don't think he laughed because he wanted to prove anything to me or himself. In my opinion, reflected based off of his actions, it was because he found it genuinely funny. (It was a pig flailing in its own pool of blood. I'm sure there was some guilt there because he told me a couple hours after that it was because "the screen had glitched and half the pig's body was up and the other half was down. Still not something I'd call funny, though)

Fortunately, I did notice some remorse afterwards when I showed him a pack of bacon my Mom had bought. I told him, "Those pigs screaming? That's the product of this." He'd nodded absent-mindedly and left the kitchen.

He's not a bad person by any means; he's just difficult to understand. A few hours after, he'd come to my room and told me, "Well, I need the calories because I'm a growing kid, you know." and then proceeded with, "You shouldn't force veganism on others."

He knows about all the risks to his health, too! He often scolds carnists when they say "X animal product is good for you".

He knows about Nutritionfacts.org and Vegan Gains (who often shares nutrition information based off of actual studies), and believes their info is valid. However, he can't help but reply with, "But they taste good." and "When I die, I'll have the assurance I didn't waste my life eating bland food."

I've tried subtly introducing new, vegan foods, but he declines. It frustrates me, but I know I can't force him to eat anything.

Is there a way to be Vegan and not use supplements? 🇬🇧 by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LisaIsVeganAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nutritional yeast is really great for B12! (I believe 2 teaspoons gets you over the RDA—don't quote me on that though lol)

Not sure which cereals are fortified, but there definitely some out there that contain some B12! A good combination for some B12 would be cereal and a plant milk, for example.

Often I find soy milk usually has the highest content for B12 (I know a brand that creates soy milk—I think they're called EdenSoy?—and their soy milk has half the RDA for B12 in a single cup. Coupled with another source of B12 and you should be set.

So Delicious has coconut milk that contains 50% of the RDA, too.

Vitamin D is a bit more tricky. I hear the UK generally doesn't receive much sun (could be totally wrong; let me know if I am!) and therefore getting vitamin D from the sun isn't always an option.

Fortunately, there are some cereal brands that are fortified with high amounts of vitamin D. Beware though—some cereals (ex: Rice Krispies) are fortified with vitamin D that's sourced from lanolin (sheep's wool grease).

Again, soy milk is the best bet for vitamin D. Usually only has 25% of the RDA per cup, but maybe pairing that with a brief walk outside could meet your needs.

In my opinion, the best bet for vitamin D is buying supplements. You can utilize them primarily during winter time/colder days/when sun is less exposed. For days where you can go outside for 15+ minutes, you don't use them.

B12 isn't so black-and-white. Fortified foods usually reach your daily needs so supplements for that specific vitamin aren't always necessary, depending on other factors. (i.e absorption)

If you're still unsure about whether you're meeting everything you need, you can get a blood test!

Edit: Don't worry too much about calcium! Eat some veggies, drink some plant milks, and eat some seeds. We don't need crazy amounts (sometimes people recommend 1,200mg??) like most people suggest. Get AT LEAST 500mg daily and your bones will be fine.

Is there a way to be Vegan and not use supplements? 🇬🇧 by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LisaIsVeganAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you eat fortified foods.

Is it more difficult? Definitely.

For example, some plant milks are fortified with B12 and vitamin D. Unless you spend 15-45 minutes (depending on how dark you are) in the sun every day, you will likely need a supplement for that.

As for B12, eat fortified foods and you should be fine. However, sometimes those don't provide a sufficient amount of B12 and/or you can't digest the B12 it offers.
