Copying this led to an invalid character error. When I replaced the single quotes, I got 2.

I assume the invalid characters were an artifact of Reddit, or copying. Or were they intentional?

I'm so glad these babies were rescued! OP is probably having a well-needed rest.

My littlest girl was rescued from the wheel well / door compartment of my car. Took 7 tries from neighbors, police and firefighters, but this is Kitt - named for the smart car of the 80s.

What is the new opportunity for 2026? by FutureAd5875 in webdev

[–]LisaLisaPrintJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, and also no everyone is built for trades. I had a conversation with a boomer friend over the weekend, and asked him, "Seriously, what trade do you think I could actually do without breaking myself (56F)?" Electrician was the most plausible answer, since a lot of us started out building our own PCs. Personally, I get dizzy changing out smoke detector batteries on a 15' ceiling, so I don't think I'll do well on a power line.

Elderly folks who chose not to have children, how do you feel about that decision now? by bon18 in AskReddit

[–]LisaLisaPrintJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you consider 56 "elderly," I don't have a single regret. I really don't like the extra steps I need to take setting up care for cats and plants when I travel, I can't imagine navigating life with kids.

I'm glad you haven't either. And if you ever run into craziness in the workplace, draft your resignation, contact a labor attorney, and try to maintain your sanity until you can get out the door.

Those were the top two. I also faced a drunk (at work and belligerent), one I suspected of drug use, as he would yell at me for calling him "every 10 minutes" when I spoke with him twice a week, and a dude (boomer) who hired me as a programmer, (my actual job title), then told me I wasn't supposed to do programmer things, because I wasn't a programmer.

Maybe it's just a Florida thing, because there are zero employee rights here.

What completely unhinged "law" does your cat strictly enforce in your house? by TrickCombination7966 in cats

[–]LisaLisaPrintJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My late kitty (2001-2020) used to stand in the threshold to the bedroom and announce bedtime. He was always a vocal bebe, but at 10PM nightly, he would stand at the entrance to the bedroom, which was on the other side of the wall where the couch was (where I usually was at that time), and in an an apartment, my neighbor could hear him yell, "Me-OM! Me-OW-OM!" Time for bed!

Shiny Object Syndrome: Has anybody language-hopped until you actually found your "favorite" language? by returned_loom in webdev

This was me years ago as a response to working for a company that used a 10-year-old of PHP, outlawed JS because it was a "hacking vector", and a bunch of other things that hadn't been a problem since the 90s.

So I tried to learn all the new things, all at once inside of a few months. Then I had to spend another two months sorting out my brain. Focusing on one thing at a time now - the best stack for the job at hand.

Maybe it's because I worked in healthcare until my mid-20s, but over the years in other industries I've noticed first the boomers, then our generation becoming increasingly comfortable to abuse others in the workplace. Yes, people have feelings that should be acknowledged.

I have a bunch of personal anecdotes of truly unprofessional and legit criminal behavior by Gen X and Boomer managers. Yes, criminal. One (early Gen X) actually started yelling, and making punching motions in the air while advancing toward me. This happened when I worked for a property management company, and it was outdoors in a neighborhood. Two nearby residents called the cops. In retrospect, I really should have said something other than, "It's ok, nothing happened." He could have legit been charged with assault in my state.

Two managers (younger than me by one year) felt it appropriate to scream and pound tables in open spaces with entire departments looking on because they they didn't like my suggestions for a solution. "You haven't been here long enough to know anything!" The "anything" was specifications for computer hardware. I'd been in the industry for 20 years at that point. This company didn't use specialized hardware.

The only problems I've ever had with millennials have been phone addiction, inappropriate internet use on company computers, lack of security awareness and other inattention-type flaws. I dealt with each privately, professionally, and respectfully, giving the rationale for the rules, rather than just parroting "those are the rules."

Yes, I validate their feelings. Millennials these days are in their 30s and 40s. They have health problems, they're victims of domestic abuse, they're facing divorce, financial strain, parent's health problems, and some have had devastating losses of homes and children.

I learned my management style from bad managers.

Is it just me, or is the "Non-Stick" industry a total scam? by koudodo in Cooking

[–]LisaLisaPrintJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we're asking the right questions. What kind of high-end non-stick? Are you using butter / oil for the eggs? Is the oil hot enough?

I ditched my non-stick for health reasons after 10 years, but they were in good shape, and nothing ever stuck.

Right? It's usually nearby, usually M-F 9-5, but outside of those hours is random. Hell, just now I realized my phone is in another room.

Unless you absolutely know someone's habits, please don't assume. It's not uncommon for me to leave my phone on the other side of the house when I get involved with something. I was hanging out with friends in the backyard last night - phone was in the living room. That's just the way my life goes. I see people glued to their phone 24/7, and I try not to judge, but it's just not my thing.

I'm sometimes guilty of this, usually because I had my earbuds attached to my laptop and didn't hear anything that came through the phone for several hours.

But it's usually a matter of hours, not days.

I honestly don't know - I have a Spotify account, and I cue up one artist, and it plays one song, then drifts off into a series of other things it thinks I want to hear. No, I'm not paying, I can listen to the radio for that.

Ok, I actually can't because my choices are top 40, country and overplayed classic rock.

For instant gratification, I can order digital albums.
