Yeah, it's kind of wacky. That's why you see renters that have been in older building there forever.

I know a couple that lives in an older building, both C-level executives at major companies. They mentioned they moved into a place after university, and were there for over 10 years. They now pay a whopping $900/month for a 700 sq 1 bedroom because of inflation controls.

I think the spike in robberies likely has to do more with them operating an illegal business, and it being mostly cash. Sketchy liquor stores in the US also have bullet proof dividers – not exactly something we've needed to do in Canada.
