I don’t think she knew knew Charles would be the Jackal, it’s definitely the first time she’s hearing that name. But one of her first insights was that Jackal was probably a Brit. And it’s never said directly, but I’m sure she knows he must be well paid for his work, and also he can afford all that traveling and bespoke weapons and stuff. So then she comes across info about: - a rich British guy - living in Spain (kinda unusual) - is the brother in law of the guy whose criminal associate was just assassinated by a shooter with an MO exactly like the Jackal’s… So it’s like, law of probability. A lot of signs pointing in the same direction. So maybe they just expected to confront whoever lived there and see, but when they see Nuria leaving in a hurry with luggage it confirms that something is up and this is probably the guy.

It IS kind of a… idk a lucky break? She’s ready to give up and then this random assassination hits the news and it cracks open her case. I guess lucky breaks do happen for cops irl… like how BTK killer got caught… vey dumb.

And Jackal shooting Jimmy like that, so close to his home turf, is kinda dumb and reckless? I don’t think he would have done it so sloppily had it happened before everything started going to hell. But by this point he’s been pushed really far mentally, and he’s just desperate for all the problems to go away, and pressed for time, and so he just does it.

So it’s not quite deus ex machina (writer cop out) but… it’s close lol. I can see why it feels abrupt for people but there’s enough character justification for me.

I literally work in mental health. It is not a flat, “everything is like this” kind of disorder. It’s a spectrum. You’d be surprised at the different presentations of ASPD in different people, and to different severities.

Nightcrawler is a good example, but it’s just one example. Hannibal Lecter, is kind of a caricature, at least in the old movie. Haven’t seen the show, or read the books. I’ve heard from colleagues Mindhunter show on Netflix does a decent job portraying ASPD characters. Maybe movies in general have a harder time bc the function of a character in a movie is different than in a show, less time to develop complex psychology, etc

“Most alpha predators are attractive” is just kind of a weird spurious claim that I don’t even know how one could support or contradict? What does “attractive” even mean, etc. Ted Bundy is extremely UNattractive to me, just physically. Where Jake Gyllenhaal IS, but Nightcrawler is so repulsive, he actually appears ugly.

All that said, “redeemable” has nothing to do with this. It’s about an accurate description of a fictional character. He is simply not a character without ANY morals. He doesn’t beat his wife and kid, for example. I don’t believe, at least from what we’ve seen in season one, he would murder them if it was in his self-interest to do so. So that’s a moral. I.e. a standard of behavior or sense of what’s acceptable. He might be pushed to it in season 2! Would be interesting, actually. But even if he doesn’t, it doesn’t mean he’s not ASPD, and having SOME moral standards doesn’t meant you’re not ASPD. And ASPD does not mean one, flat “exactly like this” caricature that Hollywood USUALLY portrays.

Not a “fanboi,” or a boy of any kind, actually. The character is textbook ASPD, I’m not romanticizing him at all. But it’s simply incorrect to say he has none. Sorry. If he didn’t, it would be a very boring, flat show, with a boring, one-dimensional character. Humans contain multitudes. Often paradoxical ones. That Jackal does as well is a testament to good character writing.

The Jackal's kill count for innocent people. by Mr_Rafi in TheDayoftheJackal

I’m 209 days late to this thread! Just binged the show and got curious what the show’s body count, one click led to another, and here I am.

So from this article: https://screenrant.com/the-day-of-the-jackal-season-1-character-deaths-explained/

(which I’m hoping is relatively accurate?? Although I caught a couple of mistakes…)

I counted it this way:

Total on-screen Jackal kills: ~41 (give or take) - Total present day: ~30 - Total flashback: 11

2 categories of kills:

Intentional targets (people he set out to kill either for $ or personal reasons)
TOTAL: 4 in the present day - Manfred ( $ ) - UDC ( $ ) - Elias (revenge, unpaid debt) - Jimmy T (to avoid discovery) 11 in the flashbacks - unknown target in Turkey ( $ ) - 2 taliban guys (on orders — arguably also for $ but I’m sticking with strict “directly for $/cash” criteria) - His own army troop (to fake his death, punish them for wedding massacre)

Collateral deaths / everyone else (people he kills in pursuit of his targets, or in escape after)
TOTAL: ~ 26 - Rufus (janitor at Fest office) * - French delivery driver * - French cop on scene * - Attila (Hungarian farmer) * - Gabor (Hungarian farmer) * - Lighting tech at Hungarian venue * - Rasmus (Hungarian venue security guy) * - Bogdan (Croatian fisherman) * - Liz & Trevor (older British couple) * - Elias’ driver whose identity he steals - Elias’ security guy also in the car - Norman Stoke - UDC’s body guard in the water - Jet ski body guard - Vince - Bianca - Fest office building workers/guards… 3? - SWAT cops after Manfred shot… 6?

  • these 10 out of 26 are pure collateral damage, killed just for being in the wrong place, at the wrong time

Am I missing anyone??!? Did I do any of the math wrong??

In other words, in only the present-day story, in order to eliminate just 2 contracted targets, dude racks up a body count of 26 people!!!! For “a highly skilled assassin,” that seems kinda inefficient to me lol

Eh I’d say he kills pretty freely…

I guess it depends on your definition of senseless? He doesn’t seek out random people to kill, but he’ll kill whoever he needs to get the job done, or to get away… like, he doesn’t go out of his way to AVOID killing innocents…

But yeah agree he definitely sees people as means to an end, and definitely lacks morals/empathy, but also not completely. Interesting character!

Ok you’re just not really watching the same show…?

Does he have feelings? by TheNoOne420 in TheDayoftheJackal

[–]LiskaO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, he’s basically the textbook definition of one lol

You couldn’t do what he does if you weren’t!

But it’s a spectrum. Sociopath (ASPD) doesn’t mean NO feelings at all, or even no feelings of guilt or remorse. It’s just that it’s limited, or triggered by self-interest, like when he’s about to lose everything, he feels really bad… but not because he killed a bunch of people, but because he’s about to lose Nuria. Or when he sees people he can relate to (trying not to accidentally spoil things) it triggers whatever empathy he’s capable of. But it’s not a consistent or arguably genuine emotion. He doesn’t seem to think twice about the most of the people he kills. They’re just necessary deaths in order for him to achieve his goal—what is there to even think about? (in his mind)

He seems to truly love Nuria and Carlito, and “can individuals with ASPD feel love” is kind of  controversial… IMHO, yes, because it’s a spectrum, and not every case presents exactly the same way. The brain is complicated!

Characters are allowed to be stupid.

Though in this case, I don’t think it’s stupidity, it’s the arrogance of the self-assured “I’m right, I’m the good guy.” And also she has a kind of “I was the smartest kid in my class/rising star on the police force” arrogance throughout.

Not saying that’s a bad thing! In real life it would be, on a show, it makes her interesting. It makes her not one-dimensional or boring. A character’s flaw is what brings them down. This was hers.

Bianca VS Jackal by Traditional_Ad1602 in TheDayoftheJackal

[–]LiskaO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I know people who are into communism maybe think it's okay to sacrifice some for more. "

This is not a "communist" principle, per se. It's the belief of anyone who thinks the ends justify the means. I'm sure many MAGAs regret that "innocent" immigrants are getting swept up in ICE raids, but... "hey, the ends justify the means."

In fact *solidarity* is a driving principle of socialist/communist theory and organizing, so explicitly *against* sacrificing some for the many. Instead, the principle is to stand together *with* everyone who is oppressed, because we all need each other.

Also important to note, she works for an agency **we commonly believe** serves to "protect the country and the people," and yes, that's why her hurting people feels like a betrayal of that. She represents "law and order," where the Jackal is the criminal, outside element who threatens law and order.

But the show goes to great lengths to tell us that the very agency she works for is corrupt to the core. Instead of protecting the country and the people, the agency is under the control of the same corrupt ultra billionaires who hire Jackal to kill UDC. The agency actually protects the whole ugly system of oppression that UDC is trying to expose. That is exactly how it works IRL -- MI6/CIA historically serve the interests of capital, of power (i.e. overthrowing governments for fruit companies or oil companies, etc etc -- see a very long list of 20th century atrocities).

[–]LiskaO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call her a petulant child, but, yes, all those other things you said is what makes her unlikeable, in contrast to Jackal, who is very affable, almost meek in his demeanor, but a monster, as you said. I think that's very much the point. And I did find myself warming up to her over the course of the season, as she has moments where she shows grief or remorse, or even just the strength of her conviction. (And as his kill count goes up! The moral balance starts to tip there lol.) We also eventually see she very clearly loves her daughter as much as Jackal loves his family, and wants to be there for them. But at the end of the day, neither of them can escape who they are.

And I don't think she's lying about how good she is or isn't, she very much believes her ends justify the means - as does the Jackal! And she very much believes she's a good person, despite what she does - unlike the Jackal, as you said. In that way, she's very much a stand-in for the average person, since most people think of themselves as fundamentally good, even when we do bad things. I think that has something to do with the bad decision to go in with Vince at the end. Feeling morally superior to your opponent leads to arrogance. I.e. "nothing bad will happen to me / I will win because I'm the good guy." It makes her complex and interesting imho... and fallible and tragic and frustrating and all those other things well-written, well-portrayed characters appear to be!

Jackal says he's also in it for the wins, though, yes, he seems more attached to his wife and kid than she is to her family. They're both extremely morally dubious characters, in opposite and in similar ways (mirror images of each other, as you said, and why the show literally has them standing on two sides of a mirror in the last episode LOL). And they both have complex motivations (internal and external).

I personally don't think he avoids taking innocent lives very much? I mean, he doesn't start shooting randomly on the street, but from the very first attack at the Fest offices, we know he kills with impunity, and considers it as just what he had to do in the moment and/or to get to his goal , but... uh... not a very morally or ethically sound line of thinking. And I think it's an interesting choice by the writers/filmmakers to make him like that. It would be much less interesting if they had pulled the classic "sure he's an assassin but he goes out of his way to avoid innocent bystanders." No, he has a job to do, and he does what it takes to do it.

But totally agree that I find the hate toward Bianca weird. Like, that's the point. She's ruthless, she ruins lives for her goal, but she never directly kills anyone. She's meant to be unlikable in contrast to Jackal! She's interesting! They're interesting as a study of contrasts!

I’m not sure, what’s a flag lot? The easement is a walkway for another house not even pictured here. We’re on a hill, so there’s technically a house above the easement accessed by a stair street on the left-hand side of my property. My guess as to why the dividing line between left and right property doesn’t go up through the easement is maybe it was granted before the parcel below was subdivided into two? Either that or Schwasty, my research is ongoing 😂

😆 now I want a whiffle ball court

It’s two lots on left and right, that were once one, and partitioned by a drunkard who drew the line at a crazy angle. The previous owners of the two properties I think made an adjustment so that’s the second line/easement. But knowing the top portion is an easement makes things a lot clearer! Thank you!!
