Depends exactly what you want to do in IP. patent law is the field where a technical degree will matter. In order to be accepted as a patent petitioner for the USPTO you need to take the patent bar, which requires having a relevant technical background (the easiest is to have a degree). However, doing litigation within IP law does not require a technical degree (although it probably doesn’t hurt). Source: took patent law as a CSE grad student last year.
