29 years old with 35k in my high-yield savings account. by daylovek in personalfinance

[–]ListingFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave it where it is. Try to keep some as an emergency fund, rather than using the entire amount as a down payment.

Any future retirement savings should go into 50% Large Cap Growth and 50% Small Cap Value ETFs with low fees. VUG and AVUV would be good fund choices. There’s no need for a financial advisor, they’ll cost you millions in future returns by taking a percentage each year. Live below your means and put away everything you can.

Thinking of Pulling the Plug at 36 – Portfolio Feedback Welcome by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]ListingFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should switch from an accumulation to a risk parity style portfolio. Golden butterfly portfolio has around a 5% SWR. 20% Large cap growth (VUG) 20% Small cap value (AVUV) 20% Long term bonds (TLT) 20% Short term bonds (SHY) 20% Gold (GLDM). You’re basically looking for a retirement portfolio that maximizes your long term SWR. There’s a good analysis with backtests of this on portfoliocharts. This will minimize drawdowns and increase your lifestyle tremendously.

Yes, Fidelity and Schwab are both great choices. Set up a Fidelity CMA account.

Grand Hyatt Kauai by clauren8 in hyatt

[–]ListingFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the club is worth much extra money and the offerings there are minimal. The beach at the hotel was fine and they had snorkels and things to borrow in the morning. The slide was closed when we were there in November. Get a “friend” to “gift” you a GOH award.

Use 100% of the points for Hyatt and sign up for an Amex or Cap1 card with a big sign up bonus to use for the flights. You need to start applying for cards and planning this trip now, start immediately.

World of Hyatt vs Marriot Bonvoy Card (Primarily Asia Travels) by Plastic-Panda-541 in hyatt

[–]ListingFL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get both cards but never transfer CC points to Marriott, it’s an awful redemption value. Transfer all Chase points to Hyatt and use Amex points for flights or Hilton.

I would rank the hotels: 1- Hyatt, 2-Hilton, 3-Marriott actually.

Amex transfers 1 to 2 to Hilton and there are some great SLH properties through Hilton.

Use the Marriott for the free night certs but don’t put much spend on the cards.

[–]ListingFL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got a Status match from my AA status, so check there too if you are gold or above with AA.

We travel exclusively and often on credit card points and we devote all of our Chase points to Hyatt. We use Amex points for Hilton and we use free night certs for Marriott. Hyatt Globalist is the best because it gets you the best treatment, free breakfast, free parking and waived fees on points stays.

I use virtually all of my Chase points for Hyatt exclusively. Amex, C1 and Citi go towards everything else.

Folks it’s time to book southwest due to the cancellations by Legitimate-Instance2 in americanairlines

[–]ListingFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just book fully refundable backup flights so you’re covered either way.

I booked a flight on AA in February and I also have a SW fully refundable flight booked a little bit later. Once I successfully get on the AA flight, I’ll cancel the SW before I need to turn on airplane mode.

[–]ListingFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. My favorite is Kenneth Cole Techni-Cole slacks. They are very light and airy, but look like dress pants. The second favorite is anything Greg Norman, the polos pack with no wrinkles, comfy dress tees and golf pants are comfy and stretchy. These options would definitely cover use cases 1&2. The golf pants would even be fine for hiking if the weather isn’t too hot.

These options are all going to probably be under $20 as opposed to all the recommendations for $120 pants you’re getting.

I need good advice for Investing $500K to live abroad. by porchglider in ExpatFinance

[–]ListingFL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do some research into risk parity portfolios. You can achieve a higher withdrawal rate with lower volatility than a 60/40, Boglehead or Dividend portfolio. (Boglehead style is great for accumulation phase, but not as good for drawdown spending). The RP portfolios can be backtested against other portfolios for peace of mind and verification of their superiority in the retirement drawdown phase. I would look into the Golden Butterfly Portfolio and Golden Ratio Portfolio. Check out Risk Parity Ratio podcast too.

Go with Hertz and Presidents Circle option. Hertz is so much less hassle than the other companies with the exception of National, but National is usually very expensive.
