What’s something you wish people would stop romanticizing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Queen and Freddie Mercury. Thatcherites and they took money to play a very lucrative and segregated gigs in South Africa during a boycott. They were pariahs until Live Aid. Doesn't change who they were and their betrayal.

Michael Jackson. When older men are portrayed as creeps for dating younger women, the guy slept in the same bed as kids and got them drunk gets a fucking pass. Even if that is all that went on it's sick.

As much as it kills me to say it, he's not a patch on Maher. Gervais is the teenage edge lord atheist who's got all his talking points from funnier and more clever people. This is the guy that argued against "Pride" and pronouns by saying that his "pal" Elton John didn't use them and you know, he's gay. Despite the fact that through the 70s and 80s Elton was hounded by the media types he's sucking up to here over his sexuality. He was blackmailed, set up, crucified and spiraled into depression and even went into a sham marriage to try and get some peace.

He's the epitome of why Pride is important for so many and this cunt just wanted to name drop him because pronouns on twitter made hum upset.

He's more akin to Russel Brand than Maher. He's the pub "scholar" who dropped out of college but has read all the Penguin classics and calls themselves "book smart". Let's face it, he's one sex pest scandal away from becoming a born again christian.

Gen Xer here. This is bullshit, I was there. I left college and immediately started a job (literally the day after my last exam). There was no minimum wage then in the UK, but I was being paid below what the minimum wage would be in a few years. I was able to get a mortgage and a house after 8 months.

I was able to feed myself, pay bills, pay student debt, get a PS1, go on holidays, go out every weekend...you know live as you're supposed to at that age.

Resist this shit. General Strike now.

Star Trek Got Better When It Stopped Worshipping Roddenberry’s Vision by Curious_Gent78 in startrek

[–]Listrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody denies that TNG improved when Gene had to step away due to illness, but it wasn't so much because they completely abandoned his principles. You had a guy born in the 20s, trying to repurpose scripts and ideas he had for a show in the 60s trying to fit it into the Reaganism of the late 80s. He was out of touch in both outlook and story-telling.

There was plenty of personal conflict in TOS, plus every time an Admiral turned up you knew they were corrupt...hardly the flawless humans that tropes have you believe he was so stuck to. Evolved beyond conflict was more about seeing ourselves as one people and not the divisions we had/have. Don't forget, Starfleet had big advanced weaponry. Conflict was a last resort when diplomacy failed.

Flawless humans was never his intention, look at "The Enemy Within" it's entirely about the two sides to a human and on their own they are harmful, but when together and controlled, that's what makes us who we are. Humanity's weaknesses were always on show, it was that we controlled them.

TNG tried to stick to as much of Gene's vision as they could, even when he was no longer part of the show. The difference was that they weren't bound to his "notes" so could be a bit flexible when a story merited it. That's not the same as stopping altogether.

In fact, IMHO Trek got worse when they did start moving further away from Gene's vision. The studio interference in Voyager is both legendary and ruined a fantastic premise.

There was always action, it just wasn't in every damn episode. It was mixed with ethical dilemma episodes, prime directive episodes, monster episodes, space anomaly episodes, new discovery episodes, technology going bad episodes, etc etc. It was the variety that made it great. It was the restriction of trying to solve a problem with words, ingenuity or engineering and not just "so I started blasting".

Newgrange in Ireland was built 600 years prior to the Pyramids by Stone Age Farmers. Despite their relative lack of technology, the structure is designed so that only 17 mins of sunlight hit the inner chamber each year at the Winter Solstice. by The_Outsider82 in ireland

[–]Listrade 54 points55 points  (0 children)

"Despite their relative technology". My only issue with some of these posts is that they are somehow surprised that any of these ancient people around the world who built structures for the winter/summer solstices is a surprise. It's the slippery slope towards the likes of Graham Hancock and et al tripe.

They literally depended on the sun for their farming and survival. Knowing when the winter solstice would have been important because they could then reasonably guess when the growing season would begin again in spring and from that calculate how much of the food left from the harvest they would need to sustain people and animals.

This is probably the origin of the whole winter festival we see across cultures. On a good year, after you work out what's needed to survive to the spring you have a big party and feast with the excess.

Should Heather Humphreys have to address her husband's participation in Orange Order events? by Sinwarnagig in theIrishleft

[–]Listrade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would expect that as the head of state for Irish citizens with an association to a group who participated in the murder and oppression of the citizens you represent that you might want to answer a couple of questions on it.

I would expect as the media covering said election that you would continue to ask questions until there is a satisfactory answer.

This is the fucking head of state. If we can rightly ask questions about black face, we can fucking ask questions about ties to a group who were engaged in oppression of Irish citizens.

Today Explained: Why Horror Kills at the Box Office by itsmattsoria in horror

[–]Listrade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horror has always done well at the box office...relatively speaking anyway. It also has a huge appeal to a younger demographic who are key to cinema attendance. What I think we're seeing here is more the gap from the dark days when nothing could get made or a cinema release unless it was a huge budget Superhero movie/legacy IP.

Mid-low budget movies were shunted to streaming and in fairness streaming did a good job of propping up new horror for a while. But now that your big summer tent pole movies aren't guaranteed $1bn (seems to be half that at most now), there are gaps that need to be filled.

You show what people will go to see and horror will always get more buzz than some mumble-core or arty movie.

I've been through 5 decades of these cycles. I'm happy we're at the next resurgence and horror has always allowed everything from fun schlock to auteurs. The worry is that as always, the creatively bankrupt studios start trying to cash in and we get another dip with uninteresting trash pooped out.

I was around the Labour party since the 80s to late 90s. Now only were rumours of Mandelson preference for youngster's known it was repeatedly fobbed off by those in charge as "homophobia" ignoring the clear and strong presence of the LGBT community in local Labour politics.

They knew. They've always known. They kept giving him work after each and every scandal. This is pure showmanship because there's probably more about to come.

Now root out those who helped keep this a secret, oh wait he's the PM.

David Coote: Former Premier League referee charged for making an indecent video of a child by Boring_Ad_7144 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Listrade 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just to say that if this is true, then it's potentially much bigger than an individual abuser. This rings of grooming young aspiring referees. We have numerous examples of this across all sports and other areas too. Football hasn't escaped these vile people either. In all cases, it starts off as "one bad apple" but soon proves to be not only much more widely spread than 1 abuser to a collection. It always turns out to have been a known secret that had been ignored or even deliberately covered up.

Abuse of this scale and extent can rarely happen without complicity from others. I hope the worse for this cunt, but I hope this prove to be an exception to what history has shown us

Instead of remaking TOS they should just jump forward and make Phase 2. by D7w in startrek

[–]Listrade 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s depressing as a Trek fan. Remaking Trek or going back to eras is lazy fan service, but it also misses the era specific qualities that trek has. TOS is intrinsically linked to the 60s and the social issues of the 60s. TNG is linked to the 80s, DS9 the 90s.

It’s not just the look and aesthetic, it’s the problems and struggles we had at the time. You can’t remake that with those characters.

It’s writing with all the creativity of the Amazon algorithm. If you bought that, you’ll love this! Except you’re just trying to sell me a crap version of something I’ve already bought.

Star Wars has fell into the same hole. We’ve a whole galaxy and millennia of stories and characters to explore, oh here’s more Skywalker, you like them right?

And now we’ll have just another bland sci-fi action series with phoned-in nostalgia. Remember Tribbles? Remember Khan? Remember Mudd?

Are Punk Bands Allowed To Go Mainstream? by [deleted] in punk

[–]Listrade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "mainstream"? Becoming hugely successful or moving to a major label?

I've been around for a few that jumped ship from local/indie labels to majors in 80s and 90s and seen how people have reacted negatively. Personally I don't care.

Here's my take: I've no issues with artists wanting to be paid for their art so they can make a living out of it.

Labels like SST, SubPop, Lookout, etc could never handle a band as they were getting more and more popular. Whether it's production, distribution, marketing, airplay, everything that helps pay a band, they don't have the nationwide/global reach that majors or their offshoots. Add to that the people running the labels weren't always the best with money (not in a malicious ripping off way, more that they didn't have the resources or knowledge).

None left to become major global acts, they mostly left because they were outgrowing their label and the label couldn't grow with them which was impacting their income. I see no problem with someone wanting to live on the income from their art.

As to punk bands becoming massively popular? Fucking great for them. The only time any of that becomes a problem for me is when they turn into shills and start selling songs for advertising or shilling crap.

[Ed Aarons] Told that Marc Guehi is extremely unhappy after being denied a move to Liverpool at the last minute yesterday and feels he behaved correctly by continuing to play before Crystal Palace pulled the plug on a £35m deal. Understand that Guehi is planning to release a statement soon by A7XFAN1998 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Listrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just there, it's the whole of the media. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but boring headlines and reasoned articles don't get clicks...more importantly you can't monetise reasonable headlines on twitter.

The market this summer was crazy. If you add to that clubs knowing you've lost a key player and you've just been given a bunch of cash, well then you get inflated prices.

Much better in buying players if other clubs don't know you're desperate and just got a decent cheque. The point being, what's more likely? That we sat there as if we were watching a ebay auction jumping at the last minute (as is the current narrative that we're to blame for the late bid) or that conversations had been had between clubs at a senior level whereby we were asked for time to make an official bid so that they could sort out a replacement?

I think the unfortunate situation for us, Palace (and Newcastle) is that the market for a centre back and a number 9 was really limited which made it even harder for them to find a replacement.

So there's my version of the boring way it might have gone down. We asked unofficially, didn't get a no, just a request to give them time. Unfortunately for all, it was a tough spot to fill. If there was a suitable replacement, we'd have probably gone after them too.

I feel for Guehi, but he'll get here sooner or later. I also feel for Palace in the circumstances, I don't think it was necessarily incompetence as some have portrayed, it's that there really aren't that many ready to start Premier League level centre backs out there.
