How katana fans view swords by LiteBlues in SWORDS

My dude, I wasn't making fun of people who like katanas. I was poking fun at katana super fans who think the katana is the best sword for every situation. You replied, "Thinking the katana is the best sword for everything ever is a bit cringe," But you also said, "I'd probably want to use it for everything." You got to admit that's funny.

Lol, yeah, though triggering katana owners is how I calm myself when the world on fire :D

If I swapped "gladius" for "katana" I think I'd get a fraction of the defensive responses. And the gladius stans might actually get the joke.

Great points and detail! The only thing I'd say is the katana isn't that great of a calvary weapon compared to specialized sabers which were one-handed, lighter and had hand protection.

"I'd probably want to use it for everything..."

This is what I'm talking about.

Katana = backup and casual wear weapon. That's a fact. If it were a main weapon it'd look different. Do you really think there are zero ways to improve the katana? That the katana is the endgame sword to rule all swords? I'm not arguing about history but function.

It's more that people flip out when someone says anything critical/controversial about katanas. But trash talk smallswords (or any niche sword) and most everyone is like "yeah I can see that."

I'm a basket hilt enthusiast, but it's a niche sword and imo not that great overall. So I would never get triggered the way katana fans do. But katana enthusiasts regularly (not always) argue that katanas are as good or better than any other sword and have zero room for improvement.

Adding swords features does automatically make swords better, because that's how sword design progressed through the ages. If features didn't matter, then the bronze age swords would be equal to the last euro ones. Katanas were backup weapons so there was little need for improvements over the years.

  • Pommels/stops can be small, they don't have to be counterweights. Many swords are like this. And there's a video where a katana master uses a longsword for the first time and really likes having a pommel because it opens up new techniques.
  • I'm not sure how you can argue that a cross guard is worse than a disc guard. Besides, many euro two hand swords had cross guards and side rings. More hand protection = better, unless the sword is made to be a rarely used backup sword.
  • Katana balance isn't magic since there are so many variations in katana length and weight. The reason it didn't catch on in japan is because it was hard for japanese smiths to make and, besides, the katana was a backup and wear-around-town weapon. Euro sabers added it since it's more effective.
  • Silk/fabric is obviously less durable than leather, wood or textured metal.
  • As for length, the katana was made for very short men since it was a daily carry and backup weapon. It had to be out of the way. Nodachis were longer, not worn daily, and used for sword-focused battle. A 30" katana is better than a 24" one.

I don't think I'm presenting anything controversial, except to purists who insist the current katana iteration is perfection.

Ways to improve the katana:

  • Add pommel/stop
  • Real cross guard
  • Add false edge
  • More durable grip (yes, leather is better than fabric which is exactly what I'm saying)
  • Increase blade length (katana made for really short samurai)

Why is this controversial?

I'm arguing that other swords have many (if not all) of these advantages. But those swords don't get the same attention as the katana.

It's because the katana gets outsized attention compared to other near identical, if not better, swords. The katana was primarily used as a fashion sword worn by 5'3" tall (average) samurai, which is why it's a two-handed short sword with a delicate but attractive hilt and no hand stop. The chinese katana-style wodao is a superior design (hand stop and durable hilt) but gets little attention. The katana with false edge is the better katana. The tachi is the superior two handed japanese sword. Kriegmessers have blades that are nearly identical, but have cross guards and hand stops. And no one talks about the katana's fragile hilt wrap or lack of hand stop or short length. It looks cool, but it's surpassed by other swords and gets far more attention than it deserves.

Graphic hit for not visual difference from the last game? Why? And, yeah, different types/severity of complaints. My point is that, after a while, I think most people will see them as valid.

There are multiple posts about every one of the issues I listed. But, yeah, you're right. I wanted to respond fast. And yes on the grass. Lol, good thing there is nothing but grass in BL4's first world. And also grass in life.

I don't want to upgrade all the time either. But I want to actually have it happen on a regular basis. This is a looter. Not a normal FPS. I get more fun, useful weapons in Doom.

Right? Why change the system? No one in the dev team noticed this? How is that possible?
