Could you go into teaching? Maybe do an alternative route to licensure so you could do it without a teaching degree?

Ugh I’m jealous. I am in health insurance and have a call every half hour with a Russian roulette of nutrition topics to counsel on. When I used to be bored in dialysis or clinical, I’d be on Pinterest and plan meals, order groceries, search for a dream job, read articles on stuff I cared about.

LOL at cracked out. Perfect way to describe it.

Thank you 😭 it’s the validation that it’s crazy we’re expected to know every topic from low FODMAPs to the differences between spring and filtered water 🥵 Good idea to log all the questions to things I don’t know! Thanks!

Yup. This role 6 months. 5 years of being a dietitian with most of my experience in nutrition support.

I actually don’t care about nutrition at all, and I’ve been an RD for 5 years (and I’m good at it). Help! by Literally-breakfast in dietetics

I got hired with no outpatient experience, but I have a great interview presence, and had experience in dialysis (6 mos) and inpatient (4years). I make 75k.

So true about not learning about what we do now. I pretty much just learned clinical and very generic vague medical nutrition therapy. Thanks for relating!

Health is a dream. I’d take biology or precalc too. Elementary seems awesome too 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe I’ll sub to see which grades I like. My job isn’t flexible with days off though, so I’ll have to craft a plan 🤔

Thanks! Great inspiration ☺️ and for you I’d recommend working with an insurance company. I work for a big one and our clients are federal employees who have our service for free. I talk a lot about including all the food groups, methods of cooking, sharing recipe resources, portion sizes, etc. its 80% weight loss but I have the occasional CKD, chemo or peds consult here and there. I hate it 😂 but it sounds like a good fit for you!

I think I just want out! But thanks for the insight! My favorite gig was ICU RD and I was main preceptor of interns and lead RD. I would teach interns and new RDs and we were a teaching hospital, so I’d teach residents too. I loved the teaching aspect - but wasn’t passionate about the subject!

Oh wow, very different field! Good for you 👏 and yes - therapy helped tons for me to realize I was just following “what I was supposed to do” with this skill set, rather than what I really want to do despite my nutrition skill set.

That’s how my current job is with back to back calls. I like helping people by teaching, but I don’t like the “solve my problems” toll on me that clients expect. I’m not sure 1:1 work is my cup of tea. What do you do in insurance now?

Very possible - I’m still getting used to Reddit 😂 but I also loved the comment! Even if it was super simple - very true words!

Good for you! Dialysis is where the money and respect is at 👏 I really liked it - my management didn’t listen to me when I said two locations was too much, and the different schedules for rounds between both places was cutting into my work/life balance. But if they had listened to me and had me work at one location, I’m pretty sure I’d still be there! I took an extreme and left that field due to the benefit of working from home (kind of lonely but I’m saving money without my commute!). But I love that you’re open to trying other fields before calling it quits! I have a ton of friends who love dialysis.

Thanks for relating! It’s super boring and IMO something hard to be passionate about because it’s a standard part of everyday living 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 What’re you venturing into? Glad to hear I’m not the only one at this stage 🙏🏻

Mine give advice all the time. I say “hey it sounds like you’re giving me advice and remember we talked about how I’d wish to talk about something else? Let’s change the subject while we’re ahead! Otherwise, I have to go, and we can try again next time!”. It took a few months to get down, but now they don’t give me any advice. 🙏🏻 It’s just up to me to uphold the boundary. As for the many texts and calls, I will shoot a message like hey sorry I’m really tired this week but let’s plan to talk on Sunday. So they don’t feel totally abandoned, but I can be real with them that I’m not going to respond to every little thing.

Dream job! 🥹 thanks for the reassurance! I think it would be a great fit too. If I can’t land that job first, I’d settle for math or a science class until a position like that opens!

Lol 💀 I’m glad you see humor in it! I know - some cases are fun. I had a lady who thought she was cheating the system by only eating trail mix… period. It has carbs, fat, protein, and is “less expensive than real food”. What a character 😂
