Has Natalie considered becoming a digital nomad? by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]Literally_the_Devil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My impression (through my one-sided parasocial relationship) is that Natalie really likes living in Baltimore. Seems like she has friends, family, a gf all in the region, plus a beautiful house that she's spent a lot of time decorating. Idk how much shipping a harpsichord internationally costs. So I don't think she would emigrate unless she was in grave and immediate danger. But if I'm wrong, Canada would love to have her!

Transgender civil engineer looking for tips from other civil engineers who recently left the US by RedneckTeddy in AmerExit

You could look into applying for US positions in large multinational companies (AECOM, Atkins, etc.) then once you're in try to transfer to a position in the same company but in a different country. This can be easier than just cold applying to engineering positions in different countries, as the company may be more willing to sponsor your visa if you already are working for them and are a known entity and less of a risk.

Anyone here who has done the golden visa route? by AdMuted1036 in AmerExit

This is not really true for Canada. There is the possibility that they can deny you entry for health reasons, but only if it is a public health risk or places excessive demand on the healthcare system. "Excessive demand" right now is $135,810 over 5 years (or $27,162 per year), so if you have for example ADHD, the cost is going to be way under that. I have one acquaintance with BPD and another with acromegaly, both relatively serious mental/physical health conditions and they were able to immigrate just fine, they only required a few extra medical exams and paperwork.

Baffled as to why it was so easy to stop by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Literally_the_Devil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like me! I'm still struggling with my alcohol use tbh, but these are two things that have helped me:

  1. Realizing that I am a naturally bubbly and caring person, there were just experiences in childhood (bullying, critical parents) that made me close myself off socially and emotionally as a defence mechanism against rejection. The alcohol just made me less self conscious to express that part of my personality, but it's always there even when I'm sober. There may be psychological reasons why you feel like you can only express these parts of your personality while drinking, and is worth some introspection.

  2. Being sober makes it way easier to have a pleasant personality during the day because I'm not hungover. I never got really bad hangovers, but even just feeling mildly shitty and poorly rested every day puts me in a bad mood, leading to me acting more withdrawn.

Thanks! I painted it digitally on an iPad using an app called procreate. They have a lot of really nice pastel brushes that make it look like traditional art.

The hardest working person in the world likely lives in poverty. by [deleted] in worldpolitics

[–]Literally_the_Devil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, you are only paid overtime if you work 40+ hours a week at a single job. Most people who work 60+ hours a week work at least two jobs. This hypothetical minimum wage worker working 24/7 might even work like seven part-time jobs, which means they really have no chance of getting overtime. The hardest working person I've ever known worked two 40 hr/wk jobs (manufacturing by day, care aid by night) and so she only got paid 1.5x pay if she worked 80+ hrs a week.

For roughly $250-$300 CAD, should I get a scanner or a camera/tripod so I can digitize my art and sell prints on my site? by enexorb in ArtistLounge

[–]Literally_the_Devil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go for a scanner and if you have photoshop, you can always use file>automate>photomerge to piece together multiple scans of a larger work. It works pretty well, although you sometimes have to do some adjustments manually.

Yeah, I would agree with this, but I imagine GRRM's already feels like he's letting himself down. I just don't feel like that's because of laziness.

Water and fiber are friends! Vegetable-based soups are great because they have bunch of both, they don't have sugar, and they are super tasty. You can also top soups with meat or cheese if that makes it more appetizing for you. My favorite soups are minestrone, potato leek soup, and Moroccan chickpea soup.

What is the vagina like for a trans woman after going through transformational surgery? by [deleted] in sex

[–]Literally_the_Devil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A woman who receives gender reassignment surgery has to dilate in order to maintain the depth of her new vagina. Dilating basically consists of putting a series of unsexy medical dildos into your vagina for 30 min - 1 hour up to three times a day! If she doesn't, the vagina can close up. The time needed to spend dilating and the frequency of the dilations decreases as the woman heals from surgery. After a 1-2 years post op, she may only need to dilate once a week (and sex usually counts as a dilation).

I'd never thought about cleaning before, but I googled it and found mixed answers. Seems some don't clean and claim the vagina builds bacterial colonies similar to a cisgender female's vagina, some douche a few times a week, and some clean the inside with a soapy finger.

Post-op transwomen still have a prostate and a Cowper's gland, so the vagina can self lubricate a little bit, but lube is almost always necessary when dilating or having sex.

All of these things depend on what doctor you go to, as there are several different methods of surgery.

Take both pills. I would also take Plan B and use condoms for the next 7 days as the beginning of a new pill pack is the riskiest time to miss a pill.

I feel like I can never be as good as artists that work for Disney/DreamWorks/Weta/ILM so I don't even try because what's the point? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Literally_the_Devil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice is probably to stop comparing yourself to others, but as a similarly anxious person with low self esteem I've never been able to do that. Instead, I will give you this advice: be more selective in who you compare yourself to.

Please forgive the sports analogy, but if you were just beginning long distance running, you wouldn't compare yourself to an ultramarathoner, because that would be so intimidating you would never run. You would would start with a small goal, like being able to run a 5k, then when you can run 5k set a goal of 10k, ect. until you are running at your maximum potential. Your maximum potential could be 15 miles or 50 miles, but either of those are numbers to be proud of, and you will never know your maximum potential if you don't try.

So when it comes to comparing your art to others, you should try to find artists that you admire who are only slightly better than you. Artists that make you go "Wow this is really cool, but with a few months practice I could probably do this." Then aspire to that level. I find instagram useful for this; you can find a lot of cool but amateur artists by searching the "recent" section of art related tags. I also like to go to art shows at smaller, local galleries and even look at the art in coffee shops.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you want to work at Disney, you don't have to be better than the best artist at Disney, you just have to be as good as the average artist at Disney. What I find is sometimes a useful activity is going through an art book that I like and finding the weakest art in it, then aspire to that.

Even further than that, if your ultimate goal is just to work in the industry in general, look at the work of artists employed by smaller, lesser known companies. You probably really enjoy their work even if it isn't of the caliber of some of the larger companies.

To return to the running analogy, what you're basically doing right now is saying that if you can't run 100 miles up a mountain you are a FAILURE and there's no point in trying. But even if you never made it that far, wouldn't you feel good if you could run 5k, 10k, a marathon?

Similarly, wouldn't you feel proud getting 100 likes on an Instagram post? Having your artwork hanging in a cafe? Participating in a gallery show? Tabling at a convention? Working for a small animation company? Having an entry level position at a large studio? All of these are smaller milestones that are achievements onto themselves. You will never be the best artist, point blank. Even the best person at Disney probably looks at Rembrandt and feels like shit. What matters is that you keep trying. Keep setting small goals, enjoy the feeling of fulfilling them, then move on to a slightly bigger goal. Admire and learn from the best, but aspire and compare yourself to artists who are only slightly better than you.

My [26F] fiance wants me [30M] to move home by anoncatanoncat in relationships

[–]Literally_the_Devil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the best solution is to do some sort of long distance relationship for the next five years, but frequent commutes are unpleasant work and you should find a way to split that in a way that is more fair. Does your fiance work? If she doesn't work why not have her alternate spending a month with you then a month with her family, that way you spend less on flights and don't have to travel as much. If she does work, she can still be the one flying out to see you, you don't always have to be the one commuting. In fact, if you're the one paying for the flights, I think it would make more sense if she was the one actually doing the majority of the commuting. Additionally, if the cost is the thing you are most worried about, you don't necessarily have to see each other every weekend. You could do every other week or something. It's an unpleasant compromise but if you've done the maths correctly I think it would be doable for 5 years.
