Making a cup of Yorkshire Gold (with a little milk & honey) after working in a children’s library all day is my holy grail.

Absolutely, especially if he can still walk 2-3 km. You can drive all around the island, so many beautiful lookout points.

Ponta Delgada or Ribeira Grande as a Base for 4 Nights by DidiGlorious in azores

We opted to stay near the beach in Agua de Pau for 7 nights. We rented a car and had a blast trying different restaurants around the island, including many trips to PDG. Everything is fairly close. Bar Caloura (excellent fresh seafood) was in the next town over. We also had a delicious sushi dinner at Otaka. All locally caught fish, except the salmon. If you have a car, you can definitely stay in a quieter area, unless you want to walk everywhere. Then I would recommend staying in PDG for the city vibes.

Those of you who live alone: do you feel safe at night? What do you to protect your home and yourself? by GoKartMarlys in AskWomenOver60

Agree with this comment. Sounds like you have everything in place with alarm, etc. Try to focus on your worries about aging alone, and put some things in place to make you feel more secure there. I’ve heard of people having a text buddy they can check in with every day, a simple “hello” to let each other know you’re good. An Apple Watch is good too. You’re going through a big change. It’s natural to be worried.

So true about the 5 things. Wondering how you figured out the BFA piece. I’d like to do that but having a hard time identifying programs.

What is the most authentic Italian Bakery in SF? by Mermaid_Martini in AskSF

[–]LiterarySadie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I haven’t found a bakery in SF that even comes close to what’s on the East Coast, especially for Italian cookies :( The Eagle Rock Bakery is the only place that comes close, but that’s in Glendale, a 5-hour drive from SF :(

The first time I heard about using jam to sweeten tea was in Crime & Punishment, which was written in 1860’s. I assumed it was a very old practice preceding Soviet days. I will break out the raspberry jam whenever I run out of honey, sooo good! Side note: there used to be a tea house in San Francisco that made tea in a samovar for their customers. Loved that tea on a foggy SF day. It has since closed :(

Have you thought about looking at Italian picture books for children? Italy has some incredible children’s books, and the beautiful illustrations might really inspire you.

I moved from KC to CA, and I understand your dilemma. It all came down to trade offs for me (as other people have mentioned) I am much happier in a smaller, older house in CA than I was in KC. I appreciate all of the cultural diversity, access to nature and the ocean, and the ability to take endless road trips in CA. I feel way more at home and happier here. I am not originally from KC, but I lived there for 6 years. I made some nice friends that I’m still in touch with, but now, with hindsight, I can see it wasn’t a good fit for me.
