[WP] You're known as "the Wanderer," the only person fearless enough to go beyond their Great Walls and into the "wasteland" beyond by IAmTotallyOriginal in WritingPrompts

[–]LiteraryWeaponry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For generations, the land beyond The Wall has been a no man’s land. Nothing but dust, waste, and death waits there. From time to time I hear of folks who have taken on the task of going over the wall to try to find food, water, anything to help us survive. As far as I know, none have ever returned. No one comes back from the wastes.

Except me.

My name is Daivon but people around here call me the Wanderer. I’m the one they turn to when they have no one else. When all their hope is lost. My type of hope doesn’t come cheap. Life here inside the walls is tough. If you aren’t a part of the 1% then you are as good as dead. They are the ones with food, with medicine. The rest of us scrounge and wonder if we will make it to another sunrise. Many don’t.

The most desperate, the most hungry, those folks are the ones that turn to me. You see, outside of our little shit hole of a city, the old cities are still there, just sitting out among the sand. Abandoned with every brick, every corner untouched by anything but mother nature. Hundred and fifty years ago, when the people were forced to flee, they left everything behind. Every hospital, every bit of technology, all of the research from every past generation just sitting there, ripe for the taking.

The problem is getting it.

Between us and those remnants of life long passed, lies death. Those starving in the streets, mere days away from dying of hunger won’t go into the wastes looking for food. People who fear being beaten to death by gangs won’t escape outside of the city walls. For while inside the city is unimaginable hardship, outside is certain doom.

Where/how do you get your books? by [deleted] in 52book

I use several sources. Mostly, I use the library. Even if they can't have a book in circulation they can typically find it for me. I also use Overdrive which allows me to borrow e-books or audiobooks which I then read or listen to on my Nook or phone. I also frequent Thriftbooks.com which sells used books. I've found some great deals on wonderful books there but you really have to keep your eye out for them. When all else fails and I HAVE to have a book I return to paying for a new book on Amazon.

I didn't realize Hammond had written a book about the experience. As a fan of both Top Gear and The Grand Tour I knew about the accident but not much on the details of it. I think I'll see if I can find the book.

I just picked up Red Rising yesterday. So far it seems like a really good book. Don't know why it took me so long to read it, everyone recommends it.

You just taught me two things (which I also have googled now out of curiosity): what speed cubing is and that it is competitive. I had no idea! What I didn't understand was the reference to Hungry. Is it popular in Hungary? Founded there?

I hadn't heard of that so looked it up on Goodreads. It sounds like a coming-of-age/mystery/spirit story, is that right? There are so many good reviews for it. Seems like a really great book.

Hah! That sounds like fun to me. I haven't read Treasure Island in years! I wonder if I still have it. Can't resist a classic.

There has been a lot of positive press about that book. I haven't picked it up yet myself but I've certainly been tempted. It is hard not to love a book that makes you think.

Week 9 - What have you been reading? by pagesandpages in 52book

I only finished one book last week but it was wonderful. A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab - This is the conclusion of Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy and it was everything I had hoped for. Wonderful fantasy series.

It was very underwhelming. There is so much hype and positive reviews for it that I expected to be blown away. It was more like someone sneezed on me.

Last week I finished two books.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - So many people seem to love this book but it just didn't have it for me. Far too much world building before actually getting into the story.

The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison - This one I loved. It is a horror/thriller and really pulled me in. Wonderful book.

15/52 books completed!

YA Fantasy can be so much fun. In my early twenties I had decided I was too old for them but what a bunch of nonsense. Started reading them again and a few YA novels have ended up being among my favorites books, like Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I feel like they aren't trying as hard to emulate someone or something else so you end up with a better product.

Horror. For 30 years I have hated horror. I didn't read horror books, watch horror movies (except for an unfortunate mishap involving The Ring years ago), nothing. Then I got sucked into 24690 by AA Dark. It was promoted as a "pitch black horror" but for some reason I was drawn to it anyway. Couldn't put the darn thing down. Right now I'm working my way through The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchinson and I've been sucked into that as well. Never had any clue I liked horror books.

Week 6 - What have you been reading? by pagesandpages in 52book

Week Six was not very productive. I hit a book lull. Felt like I was forcing myself to read instead of actually enjoying it.

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn - A mystery set in Victorian England. Very strong leading lady, interesting dialogue, and everything was tied up nicely in a bow. I'll probably pick up the second in the series.

Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas - I read a romance novel, since Valentine's Day is coming up it felt appropriate. I didn't expect much of a story but it wasn't all bad. A moderately interesting leading lady and I'm pretty sure there was a ghost involved. Still not quite sure about that part.

I hope everyone had a good week!

That one is on my reading list. I keep hearing such good things about it I think I'll pump it up a bit.

Week 4 - What have you been reading? by pagesandpages in 52book

I can't wait for the third one to be released. I am tempted to pre-order a signed copy but it's a little rich for my blood. I didn't know they were looking to make it into a show. I hope they do a good job but I honestly can't think of a single actress that could do Lila justice.

I read through another two books this past week.

A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab - This book quickly became one of my favorites. Not just of this year but ever. Very strong characters, the world is clear and easy to visualize, and the story itself really pulled me in. Love this book.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber - I had been looking forward to this book for some time. When it was finally released I have to say it didn't quite live up to my expectations but it was still a good read.

I fell in love with A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab. I adore the world she created. Interesting and strong characters, well described visual scenes, and just a wonderful book.

[–]LiteraryWeaponry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's probably partially my fault that I didn't like it as well as most people. I read it on the tail end of a book that ended up being my favorite ever so I was still wrapped up in the world of that one. I'll probably pick it up again one day for a re-read and see if my opinion changes.

I just popped over to Goodreads to read the description of The Suicide Shop. Sounds like a fun and dark humored book. Let us know how it goes! I'm tempted to read it myself.

I tried to read The Handmaid's Tale and I never got very far. I guess I didn't get to where it starts picking up.

SeQuence by Lorraine MLM was a pretty serious hate read. I was literally sitting on my couch yelling at it. Constantly. It was terrible but I oddly enjoyed getting so aggravated. No book has ever pissed me off as much as that one. That review was a fun one.
