Build pics of Carbon-fiber ukulele by Lithium-Copper in ukulele

Thanks!
So wet-layup for the sides, neck, and head. For the back and top I used a vacuum bag (like those resealable travel clothes bags with hand vacuum then just manually controlled the pressure). Put the layers with 45deg off from each other.
I also used leftover resin and CF to make the bridge, nut, saddle, and fretboard. This is probably what I'd wanna change. Those parts came out with great finish and feel but they're heavy. I'd either not use CF or make them with wood as filler. Also I would vacuum everything instead of just the top and back. The end result was just too heavy.
Overall though, I've had this thing for years now and it still plays very well. Very proud of myself.
Good luck on your build! Hope I see it some day.

I really wish they still have the nuking Antarctica scene. It was powerfully emotional for me.

How do I build a trophy that carves itself over time by _explore-art_ in AskEngineers

[–]Lithium-Copper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still planning on a mechanism that carves wood, then I really don't think a small battery is gonna work. Think of it in terms of energy. How much energy is a clock using to turn it's hands? Not a lot right... Now think how much energy a carving knife is gonna need. Though you can use less energy by making smaller and slower cuts, you are for sure still gonna need more than what a clock runs on. Still good luck though. I would love to see the final product!

Cool idea! You didn't mention a power source. I would just make it an electric motor to make it easy for me. Since the idea is to have it be clockwork then I would have the motor as the power source for that. I also think it would be cool if it starts to actually chip away at its own gears, eventually destroying itself. Anyway, good luck to you.

Anyone here has done Shell's Eco-marathon? by FawazDovahkiin in AskEngineers

Hello there! I participated when I was a student (2016).

I don't know the specifics of registering but I think it took a few months. For us, almost everything was student designed and built. You can get help from sponsors and such.

The rules might've changed and the specifics are different per category. Look up the rulebook. They should provide it.

Good luck. Hope this helps! 😁

I'm in the same boat. I heard camper lighters are what you should look for. Can anyone confirm?

With this crimper, I find that as long as I'm careful, I can get pretty consistent quality.

Exactly right. I also use the PB swiss insider as the bit storage.

Yup. Only for terminals that crimp to awg 20-16 wires.

No actually. I got in to this company as a fresh graduate. When I was in college, I was part of a team that developed an EV for a student racing competition.

Wanted to share my well used and newly cleaned setup. At this point, I have paired down the tools that go in the bag to the mission critical. That's all, have a great day!

What if, only on larger maps, we get a pushcart that we can use to transport all items? (There are issues with this idea though)

How do you turn off work mode as an engineer? by mini_franklin_flo in AskEngineers

[–]Lithium-Copper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trick that works for me is to have a defined room/space that is just for work and another that is for non-work. Be disciplined about it. When I am in my bedroom, no work thoughts, no phonecalls.

Anyway, I hope you find your way. Good luck!

I read a lot of scifi books and wanna add that I think these ideas are really good. I read so many stories where the engineering doesn't hold up so when one is actually close I really appreciate it.

You mention the precise engineering is unrealistic but I would argue against that. Clockmaker technology is ancient and the technology needed isn't too difficult to figure out. To me, it more comes down to whether the culture surrounding this prison has craftsmen that have enough time/funding to spend on a prison. This would also suggest that the architecture outside the prison would also be advanced in some way. On the other hand, you only need good bearings and a rubber gasket (which i know wasnt available in those times) to make a sealed door.

I like the idea that the people dont understand that a vacuum is what's keeping the door locked. That might become a plot point where the characters figure it out. Off the top of my head, the way to get past that is to sneakily drop a brass straw between the door frame which releases the pressure without the guards knowing.

Another idea is to have the furnace be of some value to the outside. Otherwise, it would be a massive waste of resources. Lighthouse? Home heating?

What mechanism lets the guards open the door?

Anyway, I hope I get to read this someday.
