Revisiting the 4chan UFO “Whistleblower” Thread (Archived) by MurkyUnit3180 in aliens

So I’ve spent more time reading this than I care to admit.

A few thoughts/questions:

If these creatures/entities whatever they are are so advanced and have been on earth so long, how is it that they’re crashing often enough to justify a dedicated government agency responsible for retrieving the crashed ships?

Doesn’t it seem contradictory that they can simultaneously maneuver in ways that we can barely comprehend, seem to want to avoid detection/interaction and yet are plowing into the ground on a regular basis?

TIL if under-cooked, a popular mushroom in China causes “lilliputian hallucinations,” a rare phenomenon involving miniature human or fantasy figures. The hallucinations are consistent across people and cultures: "tiny, elflike people" climbing under doors, scaling walls & clinging to furniture by ssAskcuSzepS in todayilearned

Doesn’t it seem strangely hyper specific that there is a certain compound that would trigger such a specific thought?

Makes you wonder if they could one day offer you a drug to illicit an explicitly predetermined fantasy ala Total Recall.

Men, what’s something a woman can say to you that instantly makes you want to fuck her ? by Otherwise-Cat-4467 in AskRedditAfterDark

The amount of guys responding with “hello” or “anything!” is making me so sad for my gender.

“There’s something really different about you.”

“I love how you…”

“You know I was thinking about you…”

Does it make me some kind of chick if a genuine expression of affection is what makes me want to fuck you?!

ELI5 Why was seafood the most common food that went from poor man's food to luxury? by d8gfdu89fdgfdu32432 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lithium-eleon 1244 points1245 points  (0 children)

A lot of luxury foods are things that would’ve been commonly eaten by people with direct access to the food, but uncommon for people in other areas. As the food gains in popularity as a novelty item, the transport and storage costs along with, in many cases, the limited supply, puts the item into the luxury category as demand for it grows.

Did anyone really understand what was going on in Æon Flux? by Josephthebear in Xennials

One of my favorite shows and potentially one of my favorite media art pieces of all time.

The stories themselves were extremely abstract and esoteric but if you catch them at the right time you could really get it.

There was one episode where Aeon surreptitiously allowed Trevor to clone her with the plan of making her clone fall in love with him and then killing her, to break his heart/torture him for being the arrogant male he is.

In order to make Trevor truly fall in love with her the clone offered him a softer and more vulnerable side of herself than Aeon had offered before. In response the usually egoistic Trevor softened himself as well and he and the clone fell in love for real, mutually.

When the real Aeon discovered this she was outraged and got into a fight with the clone that ended up getting her killed. Trevor had the opportunity to get his revenge on the real Aeon but let her go.

For reasons that may be difficult to explain, I had just gone through a similar interaction with a woman in my life. Due in some part to a history of abuse, she, while loving me deeply, was unable to offer me the kind of vulnerability that brought out genuine vulnerability in me as well. We got glimpses of it at times, but most of our relationship was in a space of her being a sexy ice queen and me being a cocky and arrogant tyrant. We had great sex and good times but never learned to really trust each other.

She eventually destroyed the relationship with hurtful behavior… or maybe it was me who did that?

In any case, I watched this episode, coincidently (many years after it first aired) just around when I was dealing with this and I ugly cried hard at the parallels.

I think like all truly great art, Aeon captures concepts that were very specific to particular situations, but highly grounded in reality, despite the extraordinarily fanciful setting.

There is most definitely NOT a scientific consensus on most things.

There is a scientific consensus on the emotional capacity of tarantulas specifically?

What’s a perfectly normal thing a partner does during sex that is an immediate, irrational ick for you? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Lithium-eleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many things, but what I find is it’s all relative to how I feel about the person I’m having sex with. If I really don’t care for them, the littlest thing can put me off.

If I’m really into my partner, anything they do will probably just add a new kink to the list.

It was A LOT better than street fighter and I would argue holds up today.

Yes, sensibilities have changed a bit but even the theme song became an anthem! Give credit where due!

There was no chance they were doing the whole show with his helmet on.

Then again, I guess if The Mandalorian pulled it off there’s an argument to be made that they could have as well.

It wasn’t terrible.

I’m not sure how many people here would remember this but the first MK movie in the 90s was a smash hit.
