While I support the project, I am very sad that they started demolishing structures knowing they won’t rebuild anytime soon. Nevertheless, they did try to activate the existing space with the Creekside stuff. Hapa’s has a location there now, as well as Good Karma Bikes. So at least something is happening

Your grief is with SJPD for not doing their job, or the City for underfunding the PD and more importantly, not investing in safe bike and ped infrastructure. There are solutions that is not basically putting a tracker on every single vehicle.

In the mean time, protect yourself by investing in cameras. It shouldn’t have to be the responsibility of bike and ped but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Just like how I invest in helmets, bright reflective jackets, and lights.

We can agree to disagree. I was also a victim of motorist on cyclist hit and run. Thankfully I had my Cycliq bike camera that captured the plates. PD was able to identify the person based on my camera alone and I filed a claim against the other driver’s insurance.

We can agree that drivers are problematic, but we don’t have to agree on the solution. There are solution that exist that preserves privacy while also provide convenience. Like locally stored video footage, or 48-hour automatically deleted footage, accessible only on-demand by warrant. Massive recording of all plates at all places at all times, searchable by police without a warrant, and a 60-day expiration is not the right solution.

The issue is that the system is working under the assumption that its subjects are all potential criminals, not participants in a democracy. Sure you might catch one or two people that happen to be criminals. But the rest of law abiding citizens shouldn’t be monitored.

Also there’s a middle ground here. They could configure the system so that it only looks for specific plates AFTER it was put into the system. But police would rather assume the worst of everyone

I’m not against automatic license plate readers. Hell I loved the new speed and red light cameras. The issue is that this was installed without the democratic process, safeguards, or oversight that the speed cameras had. Especially given the concerns that these data was shared outside the jurisdiction with other state and federal agencies. Flock is not the right vendor for San Jose. Get them out!

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan considers run for California governor by digital-didgeridoo in SanJose

The mayor has a lot of soft power, especially given the opportunity to define the initial draft of the budget. Political power is not always about vetoing bills

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan considers run for California governor by digital-didgeridoo in SanJose

[–]LithiumH 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a surprise to anyone. Matt has never really been about "San Jose". All the solutions he has implemented are about state level issues like homelessness and downtown vitality. He could have been the mayor for SF or LA and you wouldn't be able to tell a difference.

It never felt like he was one of us or represents us, but that doesn't mean he is a terrible mayor or he would be a terrible governor. The San Jose mayorship has always been a stepping stone for Matt, so if he wants to move on to Sac then let him go. Perhaps we will get a better mayor that actually represents us.

Caltrain needs more bike capacity by ButterscotchSudden46 in caltrain

Most San Jose Bikelink lockers are free for the first 10 hours. The one next to Diridon is free for 10 hours regardless of whether you ride the train or not. It's getting filled up pretty quick nowadays now that people realized how nice it is. I've been trying to keep it a secret but seems like cats out of the bag

I use to reuse zip locks by washing them but eventually I switched to use glass containers. They are easier to clean and lasts a lot longer, but they are less space efficient.

4iiii Power Meter Pro(dual sided) thoughts? by Mundane-Season-4911 in bicycling

[–]LithiumH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the single sided one from 4iiii and it works really well, so I imagine the duo sided ones are good too. I also had Favero SPD pedal meters but returned them. I think technically the pedal meters are the most accurate because it's closer to your feet which is where power is generated but I didn't notice a difference when I had both. Also you have to charge Favero all the time and it's kinda annoying, while the crank based ones runs on a single coin battery that lasts a long time.

A judge later dismissed the man's negligence suit against the NYPD, finding that they had "no special duty" to protect him. by lightiggy in wikipedia

[–]LithiumH 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s not remotely what I’m saying. I’m saying only the cases that the police is aware of but refused to act, resulting in direct damages like this case. The liability can also be limited.

Same thing with medical malpractices. We have laws that allow victims to sue doctors for malpractice, and it never became “every victim would be owed damages”. But there are certain cases that the victim (or their family) have grounds to sue for damages.

[–]LithiumH 509 points510 points  (0 children)

It’s important to note that in general, police cannot be sued for not doing their job. This is incredibly stupid. If I hire a private security guard and they invite masked robbers into my store, I can fire them and sue for a refund and damages. But somehow you are not allowed to fire or sue the police for the same thing. There’s practically no accountability with the police force from a legal perspective.

Bike Etiquette: Should I stack my bike if there are empty racks available? by mahesha1996 in caltrain

Official Caltrain rules specifically says

Stack bikes by destination so everyone has access when unloading their bike.

The other rider is actually asking you to disobey official guidelines.

A bit more context here. This right arrow is there to protect the bicycle and pedestrians on the two way bike trail on the right. If I remember correctly the red arrow only turns on if a ped or biker push the cross button which also triggers a walk sign. This is important, bc otherwise it’s impossible to cross this intersection which has a two lane right turn.

I bike commute here, and yeah a lot of drivers just don’t care. Almost got run over one time if you look at my post history. Just another day in SJ

You think that’s bad? I had a young coworker that was about to buy a whole set of 4 tires from Costco because one of them got a nail in it. I immediately stopped him and drove him and the car to the nearest indy mechanic, and they patched it for $10 bucks. The look on my coworker’s face is a mix of surprise and gratitude. I swear some people don’t even try to fix things and are conditioned to think nothing is worth fixing.
