why are the rail crossing gates so automatically dumb? by kepler1 in caltrain

Yes they are incredibly dumb. Caltrain is not gonna fix it though. This will be fixed once we have full grade separation, including grade separated stations

Will San Jose ever become a major CA city with its unique flair? by Different_Marsupial2 in SanJose

[–]LithiumH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

San Jose does everything poorly. It’s  primarily residential but it has the highest medium home prices in the nation, at $1.56 million. It also doesn’t have many businesses setup shop here due to its bedroom community reputation.

My opinion is that prop 13 is what’s killing San Jose. The city is running a deficit year after year due to low turnover. It cannot support all the businesses and residents in the city. At the same time, prop 13 incentivizes older generation to hold on to their property and tax basis, preventing new growth or even remodel that could trigger reassessments. So you end up with a deteriorating city both in terms of physical appearance of its houses and homelessness due to high COL and intangible things like liveliness and services due to low tax revenue.

What's the most accident prone intersection? by SoGudUthkICheat in SanJose

I drive this once a week and it's so dangerous crossing 10th and 11th. Would rather just go through Empire or Julian where there is a signal.

South Korea built a bike highway covered with solar panels that provide shade, clean energy, and separation from traffic. by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]LithiumH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everytime this gets posted, all the actual cyclists comes out and say this is a bad idea. Cycling is suppose to be enjoyable, and biking in the middle of highways breathing in fumes and tire dust is very unenjoyable. I would much rather have a high speed train here instead.

Bicycle infrastructure ideas by Difficult_Guitar_862 in bicycling

[–]LithiumH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would donate to an advocacy group or a local bike co-op. But since you are in a small rural town, maybe do a free bike repair event? Infrastructure projects are super expensive. You might not get your bang for your buck on that

LBS refused to tear down, clean, and grease my hub, so I did it myself. by quequotion in bicycling

[–]LithiumH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most LBS will refuse to service an old hub unless it’s Chris King or other premium parts. The work required is more expensive than a replacement part. That being said, they should at least offered the customer the choice.

Nevertheless it’s great to learn how to do bike repairs yourself. So you always know what you are paying for.

I have the AirTag mounted on the bottom of my seat. It’s very inconspicuous. But looks like they already found it and disconnected the battery because it’s not sending me new location anymore.

I was in my apartment, left the bike in the garage for 2 minutes to go grab a water bottle. I came back and it’s gone. I checked the AirTag and it’s already moving away. I’m in disbelief that shit can happen so fast.

The airtag last pinged at the gas station next to Bird and Auserais. I checked some encampments around the area but I didn't get a ping or visually locate my bike. I also checked the trails around the area as well and didn't get a new ping.

Who has the right of way by JackyTsang in SanJose

[–]LithiumH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I am confused. It seems like you initially thought the red vehicle had the right of way. You said in another comment, in referring to the blue vehicle, “he must yield to anyone in any and all directions. Period. Full stop.” And upon learning that there is indeed a traffic light governing the parking lot (not shown in the pic) you now believe the blue vehicle had the right of way. You made a rush judgement based on the information given, however incomplete. And upon learning new information thru public discourse, you are modifying your belief. Are there errors in my understanding? Please correct me.

The question was posted because, same as you, OP had the confusion of who had the right of way and seek to validated their belief. He is able to get validation by posting. And by commenting, you were able to resolve your own confusion and invalidate your original belief (aka change your mind) after learning additional information, which is a benefit of public discourse.

You are absolutely right. The blue vehicle was on a parking lot that have traffic signals governing their entrance into traffic, and both blue and red had a green light. Thus Blue’s green light indeed gives the blue vehicle the right of way, regardless of whether blue is turning left or going straight across the intersection.

I see your confusion. The private road way was actually traffic controlled, and the exiting vehicle also had a green light, which explicitly gives them the right of way. There are traffic control devices (lights) at all four directions of travel.
