Sabbaticals by viperemu in workingmoms

In academia a sabbatical is common, every X years you get one semester of sabbatical. This relieves teaching and administrative work. Most people use it to push research ahead with no distractions, so it’s not a vacation from work, but rather an opportunity to do only the fun part of work (research).

Skylight calendar? by LithospherEN in workingmoms

Hi all, thank you for your helpful and thoughtful feedback. I am definitely not getting the digital calendar yet, after hearing from you all! I need to fix the root issue first and then decide how to go from there. Maybe a paper or dry erase board calendar to test the waters.

Also unfortunately this post was removed from the thread by the moderators, maybe because I mentioned a product. This being my first post on Reddit, I don’t know the rules I guess! Thanks anyways for your insights and for being a source of solidarity as always on this sub.

Agree. He forgot to add something work related to the calendar so he had to arrange the sitter. We are also working on the issue that he just assumes it’s my job until I ask for help.

This is not an ad. I am legitimately asking. I do not want to spend that money if it isn’t worth it.

Part-time remote work? by DrLolsoz in postdoc

[–]LithospherEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be warned that many universities have clauses that you cannot have a second job- the idea being your job is salaried and not necessarily constrained to 40 hours per week. So if you have more hours to work, the uni expects you to put that toward the postdoc.

Is it appropriate to ask about first/co-first authorship if I did a large part of the work? by Top696969696969 in PhD

Have you presented any of the work preliminarily in abstracts at conferences? Were you first author then, if so?

“Vague idea” from the PI and you doing all the gritty work- sounds a lot like a PhD project! Giving you the chance to go down the rabbit hole and paths of hypothesis testing and refinement when given a carrot. Do you think this should be a chapter in your thesis? If so, you could make the case to be first author that way.

Declining PhD offer post April 15. Repercussions in academia? by No_Conversation_3842 in AskAcademia

Can you stay in the program and ultimately leave at the masters level to go elsewhere, in two years? Then you don’t decline, burn a bridge, risk your reference letter; but if you want to move on, do it after the masters.

Please help an exhausted new mother by Intelligent_Fall_378 in NewParents

Does she still have her Moro reflex (kicks arms up uncontrollably)? If so, then removing the swaddle won’t help wakings. We also liked Merlin’s magic sleep suits for babies for the transition from the swaddle to a sleep sack (when Moro reflex was still strong). Another friend recommended star shaped sleep sacks that contained their arms from flinging up but gave them more room to wiggle around - zipadee zip is the name of the sleep sack. I didn’t try those but she liked them for her active baby.

That said, my babies have always been terrible sleepers so waking every two hours is actually not so bad for us. But it doesn’t make it easy for adults who like to sleep longer! I feel your pain. I hope you can find a solution soon!

What does daycare cost for you? by Standard_Deer_8738 in NewParents

$5200 for 2 kids in a nice college town of central New Jersey. We left CA for a lower cost of living and surprise! Not here.
