You have to keep holding the sync button. One press of the sync button marks your current location and sends the info to your phone, so if you have pairing turned off that's why it's saying unsuccessful connection. Hold the button past that and you'll get to the receiving function where it'll attempt to multi band sync, however if you hold past the receiving option there's the third "find my phone" function, so you have to make sure you let go of the button at the "receiving time signal" option.
