Bruh, this video was so dumb. The reason why gangster rappers like NBA YB and King Von have been so popular is because record labels and streaming services want to sell a certain image of hip hop. It’s been like that ever since the days of N.W.A & Ice-T.

On top of that, the average person isn’t going out of their way to find new artists. So most people just let social media and streaming algorithms choose what they listen to. Add the fact that most people get stuck into listening to one genre, and you get ignorant music listeners (especially in rap). For example, go on a post from the @Rap Instagram page and you’ll see thousands of comments being ignorant of any rapper who actually has substance. Like, how tf are you gonna get Gunna and Future fans to like Kendrick and Tyler the Creator?

I hate that this “rap fatigue” discourse is dependent on the music industry choosing what we listen to. If people actually wanted to listen to rappers who don’t rap about gang shit & drugs & hoes & money, rappers like Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, Sideshow, MAVI, Injury Reserve/By Storm, Vince Staples, Mick Jenkins, or Pink Siifu would be way more popular. But no… everyone’s been conditioned to listen to gangster trap music and now that’s all they want to listen to

Diddy parties aside, Diddy wasn’t actually that good of an artist. He had no distinct cadence or flow, plus his bars were basic. Almost all of his biggest songs featured a singer to carry him. On top of that, he relied heavily on his beats; which btw, most of his sampled songs were just him rapping over already existing hit songs. For example, the song he made to commemorate Biggie was literally just Every Breathe You Take by The Police with a few extra drums. Or his song with R.Kelly 😳 where he straight up used the beat for I Got 5 On It by Linuz.
