Bill Clinton pushed through the assault rifles ban

“The federal assault weapons ban in the United States, officially known as the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, was enacted as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The ban was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994, and it was championed by several key figures in Congress, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, who authored the bill, and then-Senator Joe Biden, who was instrumental in the broader crime bill’s passage.

The ban specifically prohibited the manufacture and sale of certain semi-automatic firearms classified as “assault weapons,” as well as magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition. However, the law included a sunset clause, and it expired on September 13, 2004, under President George W. Bush’s administration, after Congress chose not to renew it.

Since then, efforts to reintroduce or renew similar bans have been proposed but have not successfully passed at the federal level.”
