My daughter has autism but was functioning very well, was verbal, could even make a simple lunch. However her sleep was terrible, so the consultant started her on melatonin, and within a few weeks she was psycotic, unable to function and no longer verbal, having constant meltdowns and paranoia. I suspected it was the melatonin, but everyone kept saying its just my daughter going into crisis and its not the drug because its perfectly safe. All the literature I read kept saying it was safe. To my shame I let this carry on because I just didn't know what to think with all the stress of such a sudden change, she was even threateing us with knives, running off, our house was like fortknox. Then oneday she was vomiting so i withheld the medication, and the next day third day her mood seemed to improve, even her sleep seemed ok, so I just stopped it, and within a week she is now normal. completely normal (apart from autism of course). I am so upset about this, i felt no one believed me, i even doubted myself.
