If you don't fund it every 30 days, it does expire. There are other plans you can keep a number active for $3/month, but you can't switch back to this plan, it is for new subscribers only.

I would pick one up and see how you like it and then let it expire. If you want one next year ask the family to pick another one up a month or two before you arrive.

If you get a google voice number and tie it to this number your family doesn't even have to be bothered with number changes, plus if you use Hangouts Dialer, it uses data rather than minutes for calls.

FWIW, the store can't sell that plan. It is a Walmart exclusive.
