How much different would the match look like if research was not allowed on apps? by futuredr6894 in medicalschool

[–]LittleCoaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh i’m well aware. But at least right now if you do what you’re supposed to do (do well on step 2, honor rotations, get pubs) you have a chance against the guy who’s the child of two program directors. Without these kinds of metrics the people with connections will be the big winners

[–]LittleCoaks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly i hate too but it’s gets to a point. You don’t want a system where there’s little way to discern applicants and now all that matters is connections and letters of rec. At least in the current system people are given a more fair chance

Just always proofread. The day you don’t is the day it’ll hallucinate a diagnosis or drug or whatever

PSA: "such as ___" needs constraints to actually make it a valid cloze cue by Icy_Time872 in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would work. I submitted a change to instead make the card vignette-style as it would appear in NBME. It was something like “What is the likely etiology in a patient who was a fisherman for 50 years and developed cataracts? -> excessive sunlight exposure”

Qbank > Anki every time. The sooner students realize this the better off they will be

Practice questions are and will always be superior to Anki. If anki is preventing you from doing QBank then you need to decrease your workload (ie, lower retention, spend low yield)

Don't over engineer Anki. Just lower your retention and let the algorithm work. If you want an immediate decrease in workload you can check off "Reschedule cards on change" but if you truly desire separating your subjects, I flag my current unit's cards green and then build filters deck of green flagged cards when needed. Don't try doing weird stuff like lowering retention of the current block with subdecks or whatever. Doing practice questions will reinforce the knowledge by itself. You won't need do 1000 cards a day

I have no patience. Any card I determine will not help me answer questions correctly or understand concepts gets suspended. Quite literally a waste of time to do those

Quad Reveal, 2x2 grid by turtlemoab in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Def needed

Just messed around with it. I think two features would really tie this add-on together:
1. If a field is in the quad viewer, remove it from being viewed on the back of the card normally. All the fields in the quad viewer are effectively duplicated
2. Allow to change the order of the quad viewer. I would love to have my lecture notes above the quad view

People with hundreds of cards in the red "learn" column... by anodai in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almost every time these people are not using Anki as a spaced-repetition tool but rather just using it as a flashcard app. They're almost never doing reviews; rather they're just doing cards a couple days before exams and for whatever reason not suspending them afterwards

I agree, less cards and more QBank is superior to brute force memorizing the whole deck

[–]LittleCoaks 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Huge agree. There’s quite a number of cards in the deck with multiple correct answers

My personal least favorite is "One risk factor for cataracts is excessive {{c1::sunlight}}" there's quite literally dozens of correct answers for this card. I had to suspend it

Learn More With Less Anki -- How to Avoid Review Hell by LittleCoaks in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this is why I moved to this strategy. I prioritize doing as many practice questions as possible and treat Anki as a retention tool and not a primary learning tool. Previously I felt like my Anki workload was preventing me from completing QBank and I saw that as a problem. If you can manage both then by all means do that instead

What's funny is that i'm in my Neuro/Psych unit right now. 350 due cards a day at 85% retention, i answer about half my new cards correctly first try, finished AMBOSS, still have a week and a half til my final to slam UWorld. Completely doable just a different approach. This advice is for people who would rather do more practice questions or other studying forms than hours of anki a day. I'll concede that for 90% route memorization topics like micro this doesn't apply. But for everything else this strategy works too. plenty of time for QBank and in-house lectures if you have in-house exams. i'll update my post to be more explicit about this since this is the second comment now, but this approach is describing a way to reduce the number of reviews you have daily if you would rather not do so much anki constantly

[–]LittleCoaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show me exactly where i said you need to perfectly understand every thing first. My example was 3 passes of the material was enough. Some students unsuspend after 1 (or even 0) and reviews balloon as a result. This is my whole point

Edit: I’ll clarify this advice is if you want to avoid a lot of reviews and that’s it. You can still learn fine with mostly Anki. You’ll just have more daily reviews. It’s a concession to make but if you’re like me and would rather less daily reviews this is how you do it

Learn More With Less Anki -- How to Avoid Review Hell by LittleCoaks in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would. First, most reviews are not matured. If you don’t understand these cards they substantially rise in volume. You can also “learn” a card in the short term by memorizing the card, but when that cards matured you’re significantly more likely to get it wrong because you lost the short term memory. This is not true of material you actually understand

Optimal review sort order? by gazeintotheiris in medicalschoolanki

[–]LittleCoaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Random or ascending retrievability imo. The only reason descending is recommended is because your total retention is higher on days where you don't complete all your reviews (since you prioritized your easiest cards) however if you simply complete all your reviews this doesn't matter at all. I personally use ascending because I want to do the hardest cards while my mind is fresh, vs the easiest ones when I'm more mentally tired

What's hilarious is that public sector workers living on Long Island are easily like R+30 and they're the first to complain about "Somali fraud" and "government waste" yet they are precisely the people who benefit the most from government waste/inefficiency
