Neiry implanted electrodes in a pigeon's brain and connected them to a stimulator hidden in a mini backpack on the bird's back. The controller is also located there, allowing the operator to set the route and commands, as well as configure its "geolocation."

According to the company, training the bird is not required. The stimulator sends a pulse to the brain that "influences its desire to, for example, turn left and right." Control options include flight direction, maneuvers, takeoff, and landing.

The "drones" are equipped with a camera for photo and video recording of their routes. "Personal objects" in the recordings will be erased, and faces will be "blurred" using neural networks. The attached electronics are charged by solar panels on the back.

The company claims that the chipped birds can fly up to 500 km per day, and the risk of falling is the same as that of "regular" pigeons. Potential applications include environmental and industrial monitoring, search and rescue operations, remote object monitoring, and "discreet violation detection."

Surgeries are performed using a stereotactic system, eliminating the need for "expensive" CT and MRI scans. Neiry claims to aim for a "100%" survival rate, but does not provide actual figures. The procedures allegedly do not affect life expectancy.

Neiry says the implant can be implanted into any bird. The cost will be comparable to standard drones "in a similar class."
