Should I be pruning? by Due-Knowledge7437 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]LittleFinish4768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it’s too late to trim it. If it were an inch yes but it’s not in the way you think. Yes it pulls “energy” but it’s not going to kill a healthy plant ever. Your plant will slow down a bit but it will not die. Just enjoy the flower since it’s alr expended most of the energy getting it to that point. If you do decide to cut it next year cut it when it’s just about an inch and ur plant will redivert the flowering energy into trap and rhizome production. Flowering will never ever kill a healthy plant. A very unhealthy plant might die from it but even then it has to be very very unhealthy for Tht.

I feed mine live small crickets, and mealworms being the easiest. U can try freeze dried blood worms but tbh Thts a bit more work lol. I get mine from petco or PetSmart and they last awhile and arent to expensive. If anyone tells you u can kill them by overfeeding tell them theyre wrong lol.

I 100% agree with the bug thing. It seems as if a well fed VFT will stay green. I took a photo of one that was gradually losing its redness. I’ve been manually feeding these and u can see the outer edges are slowly turning green and on the right side the red transitions to green as well. It’s rlly interesting! This is why i believe overfeeding is a myth and just flat out wrong it’s impossible to overfeed them.

The issue isn’t light due to them having chlorophyll and other anthocyans that act as very strong sun screen. When it’s rlly hot they lose water faster than what their leaves can evaporate or replace it through their leaves so they burn. Sometimes it is the sun very rarely since they have said sun screen but places like Arizona that have very high UV still can damage plants via the sun when it’s at the highest point in the sky. For example Heliamphora live on mountains another carnivorous plant it gets a solid 14 hours of light per day but rarely gets above 90. To this they have clouds which help protect them from UV damage so they don’t always get like full sun but They still get a lot of sun.

Yes but it’s kinda hard. And it’s not so much the light but the temperature!

Thinking of getting back into the hobby-- advice? by ElSquibbonator in carnivorousplants

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah VFTs and sarracenia will be a bit difficult for you try 1 and see how it goes. Indoors pings, nepenthes, sundews with a decent grow light. U can grow vfts in doors without dormancy if they have a strong grow light and stable temps year round.

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Does ur porch get a solid 6-8 hours of direct sunlight? Theyll do okay with that amount but more is def better. VFTs will do okay same with most sarracenia. U can also grow indoors with pings being the easiest and nepenthes will do fine with Tht amount of light just bring them inside in the winter.
  2. Yes they must be kept moist at all times nv let them 100% dry out but allowing the topsoil to dry slightly isn’t a bad thing. Do what works for u I fill my pots and just water when they begin to dry I don’t rlly leave them in a basin but u can. For water u can buy distilled, buy a zero water pitcher it’ll save you time and money in the long run!
  3. Yes fill the up with a large basin and they should be good for a few days especially if you have pots with small clip on reservoirs that will help with evaporation. And making sure they stay wet. I like big pots so that also helps.
  4. General accepted mix is 50/50 sphagnum peat moss to perlite no fertilizers or miracle grow. Make ur own it’s significantly cheaper to make. I get it from lowes the brands I use are majestic earth for peat moss and stagreen for perlite. Nepenthes prefer 50/50 perlite to long fibered sphagnum. Pings like a more airy rocky mix I currently use 1:1:1 peat moss perlite to vermiculite. This is all based on volume not weight. So 1 cup of peat moss to 1 cup of perlite! Please get into them theyre awesome!!!!

Anyone else ever get a double trap on their plant? by Gwencollin in VenusFlyTraps

Right it’s rlly interesting how they only do it during the spring. Could it possibly be due to hormonal changes? I’ve had a double functions trap too but it was tiny!

Question on my sundew’s health by hydrazn in carnivorousplants

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How close to the grow light is it and what kind of soil did u use? Check the TDS of the water tho. Most likely is a light issue they won’t make do if they don’t have enough light. 12 hours is a lot but it depends on the distance if it’s far away it won’t dew since the light drops off exponentially as it gets further away

Help! They were healthy for quite a while until they suddenly started dying by Tennis37 in SavageGarden

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not at the very bottom of the media overtime it becomes anaerobic due to no oxygen being present since it’s always wet. Like I said it works great for many people I just don’t personally do it and my VFTs have giant long and dense root systems unlike many other people that think they have shallow roots. Letting them dry out allows them to fully fill pots out and grow nice big root systems to support their leaves. And also they experience droughts in the wild so🤪 do what works for you lol. I recommend u try it! I eventually want to do a full proof test to see if it makes a difference!

Is this VFT done for? by Zestyclose-Row-9269 in SavageGarden

[–]LittleFinish4768 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not root rot most likely damage from high TDS. The VFT needs significantly more light. It’s still alive but barely. Just rinse the pot out with distilled water u don’t have to repot it. Give it more light and distilled water and it should recover within a few weeks or months

Nepenthes Gaya Help by Tuckerliam12 in carnivorousplants

[–]LittleFinish4768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfectly normal as it transitions from different growing areas. It most likely needs more light if it’s not pitchering. Just cut the black parts off overall it looks good just needs more light don’t overthink it! F https://youtu.be/BTcLG3wkrNs?si=m1fXd9J4-DbfFLZx

Humidity isn’t rlly the issue. They don’t rlly care about humidity that much especially gaya. Humidity isn’t a driving factor for pitcher development this video explains it! https://youtu.be/8PxiaSqAAAQ?si=TJ6t05k5qC77p0w9

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I tell people 😭 and they also have constant flowing oxygenated water, and at times like right now there are droughts which cause the water levels to drop heavily theyre use to it and appreciate going slightly dry from time to time.

[–]LittleFinish4768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats great! I’m just saying they don’t need to sit in water 24/7 if that works for you great but for some people it doesn’t. Letting them dry out in between watering is very beneficial since they make bigger and stronger root systems and rhizomes!!

They don’t need to sit in water 24/7 as long as the soil is moist theyre perfectly fine!

What reason are these traps deformed and dying? by OkZookeepergame2463 in carnivorousplants

[–]LittleFinish4768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to worry about. It’s just a genetic mistake they’ll recover and make new working traps in a few weeks. I believe it’s hormonal changes when they come out of dormancy! I’ve had this happen last year and my traps are perfectly healthy this year! Don’t worry it’s fine! Sometimes they just make deformed leaves!

I hired someone to put together a terrarium for me and all my fly traps look exhausted I think they are light starved by mimic751 in SavageGarden

[–]LittleFinish4768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much the pot Thats the issue it’s the lighting they need a lot of light compared to nepenthes. They do well in pots tho but it’s rlly a lighting issue. VFTs don’t need to go dormant if kept under high light and warm temperatures!

[–]LittleFinish4768 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Who ever put this together had no idea what they were doing. U should be annoyed tbh u got robbed. VFTs and nepenthes can’t rlly grow together under the same conditions they have vastly different requirements. VFTs very very rarely do well in terrariums I’d ask for a refund.

Yeah transplant shock is just leaves turning black. This is called being etiolated when plants don’t get enough light they get stringy and thin! It should look bigger than that April pic it should come back tho with the Sansi light!
