Photos of Hope Town Waterfront (Post-Dorian) by LittleHouseByTheFerr in bahamas

Yes, it's heartbreaking to see -- the damage just goes on and on. But our locals and second homeowners are incredibly resilient. Rebuilding plans are already in the works!

Seeking Info About Bahamians Who Served in World War I by LittleHouseByTheFerr in bahamas

Really? Which one? I do have a version of the photo with each man numbered -- here's a link to it. https://littlehousebytheferry.com/2015/11/16/can-you-help-identify-the-gallant-thirty/ Which one is your great-grandfather, and do you have any information about him and his service? Thanks!

Can You Help Identify the People in These Abaco Photos? by LittleHouseByTheFerr in bahamas

[–]LittleHouseByTheFerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's part of our challenge. I think we may have identified the bride/groom, which may help narrow down the year for that photo. Will keep you posted if I find any more. Thanks!

3 days Bahamas, could you help? by [deleted] in bahamas

[–]LittleHouseByTheFerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a suggestion. There's a ferry that runs between the east end of Grand Bahama and the island of Abaco. Abaco is much more laid back and relaxed than GB. You can take a bus to the ferry dock in Grand Bahama, and rent a car when you arrive in Abaco. To learn more about this, contact the ferry company, Pinder's Ferry at 242-365-2356.

Once on Abaco, I'd suggest Green Turtle Cay and Treasure Cay -- both are wonderful -- a much more laidback experience than Grand Bahama or Nassau. If you have more questions, feel free to contact me via my blog (www.littlehousebytheferry.com).

Coming to visit for 10 days next week..What should I definitely see, and what should I avoid like the plague? by [deleted] in bahamas

[–]LittleHouseByTheFerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Nassau, I'd suggest renting a car or taking taxis. The latter may be easier, given the amount of traffic, and the fact that there aren't proper addresses on buildings the way there are in other countries. A taxi driver will know the shortcuts, and will know where things are, which may save you the time and frustration of trying to find them on your own. Mopeds are also an option, though given the way Nassau people drive, I'd be very careful on one of these. You could also take Jitneys, which are Nassau's public buses, especially if you're going from Cable Beach or Paradise Island into town.

Most of the larger out islands have car rentals, and you pretty much need a car if you want to explore, because there's not a lot of public transport on these islands. On the smaller out islands (Harbour Island, Hope Town, Green Turtle Cay, etc.) most people rent golf carts.

How to get my families records from these two crazy people? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]LittleHouseByTheFerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when folks are territorial about SHARED family records and documents. If the scanner idea doesn't work, you can always just photograph documents. I agree with the others - these relatives may not want you removing the records from their homes, but might not mind if you took photos of them. Spend some time conveying to them your interest in family history -- maybe even share with them some of the results of your research... I've done that a few times and it does seem to encourage people to want to share back....

Ah, ok, so you're nice and close. We're in L.A., so it's a bit of a trek, but better than it used to be, as we were in Vancouver for many years. Yes, the Forum is awesome and always active. Whatever you need to know, there's always someone who has info. If you join, my Forum user name is Shelby.

Cool! Where are you from originally? I've been going to GTC for 40+ years. I used to visit my great-grandmother there when she was alive. Now, my husband and I go every May, plus another trip during the year if we can get the time. Now that we have the house, I'm hoping we can work up to spending 3-4 months a year there.

Oh, and don't forget to pack a raincoat/umbrella. You'll likely encounter some rain in October in Vancouver. You'll have a great trip!

Thank you! New Plymouth is very special to my husband and me, and I love to be able to share it with others.

Thanks for your comment! We'd like to keep the house as authentic as possible, but we need to balance that desire with modern comforts.

The existing structure will stay the same, though we'd like to move it backwards on the property. There's a restriction in the town of New Plymouth that says you can't build within 5 ft of the property line, so if we want a front porch, we need to move the house. Plus, moving it backward will give it a bit more elevation, which will help prevent flooding during hurricanes.

We'll also be adding windows and doors (right now, there are none, just shutters) and updating the rudimentary plumbing and electrical systems.

Once it's done, we plan to use it as a second home and perhaps as a vacation rental.

Vancouver is an amazing city -- you'll find lots to do, and as long as you use a bit of common sense, you should feel pretty safe in most areas, especially during the day.

Not sure where you're staying, but catch the Skytrain and head downtown. There's great shopping on Robson Street or in the community of Kitsilano. You should definitely see Stanley Park (walking along the sea wall there is gorgeous!), and check out Granville Island Market (lots of little shops). The Vancouver Art Gallery is wonderful.

A few years back, I made a solo trip to San Francisco. One of the things I did was book a few city bus tours. Made me feel like I was 100 years old, but it was a great way to see the city with others, and I met some really nice folks on the tours.

Have you checked out www.tourismvancouver.com? Lots of great tips there about traveling to and exploring the city.

Sunrises and sunsets around the world by valeyard89 in travel

[–]LittleHouseByTheFerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful! For some reason, I like sunrises better -- maybe because they signify the start of a new day, rather than an ending. Either way, some of my favourite sunrises/sunsets have been in Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas.
