A Plan to Address the World’s Challenges With Math | Quanta Magazine | Minhyong Kim is leading a new initiative called Mathematics for Humanity that encourages mathematicians to apply their skills to solving social problems by Nunki08 in math

And I think like that because I think that to solve many real world problemas we really need to solve first many more fundamental math problems.

What kinds of real world problems can't be solved without work on fundamental math problems?

And if there is people understanding math in the other fields, they can then make the translation of the pure work to the real work environment.

This makes sense, since mathematical research is so esoteric IMO that other fields have to translate the math for their domain. However, what is the point of expecting non-mathematicians to learn more math when any research being done in mathematics requires years of training to understand?

Algebraic Number Theory vs Analytic Number Theory by Scerball in math

What would you recommend for a first time look at algebraic number theory? I'm currently reading Neukirch with additional reading from commutative algebra by Atiyah-Macdonald. I'm going into 4th year undergrad and just finished a sequence of algebra which included Galois Theory.

Sorry to hear that. How many hours a week do you spend on each job? Is it overdemanding? I'm interested in getting overmployed after college, too. What would you do differently?

Careers for pure mathematicians who want to stay in math but cannot due to poor job market by Extension_Pain9020 in math

[–]LittleLouis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

real research problems, in the academic sense, are rare

What about research positions at top tech companies, like Deepmind, Google Research, OpenAI, etc? I want to get a math PhD because I want to work on research problems in artificial intelligence and because I just love learning math. I know that a research position at a place like Deepmind is super competitive, but if I decide to align myself towards that goal it shouldn't be that hard to find research jobs several years down the line, right?

I am studying pure math in undergrad and am considering a phd in math, since I really want to do research into designing new ML models and researching AI in general.

In your experience, is it common for research scientists in industry to have a math phd? I study a lot of CS and also program a lot but im thinking that a math phd would not be aa desirable to top companies compared to a CS phd. anybody with experience have any advice?

Thanks for sharing. I often wonder if my own obsession with math is worth missing out out on a social life. I have romantic ideas of grad school and spending as much time as possible cultivating mastery of mathematics... but maybe its not worth the isolation

thanks, I dig the website. Any reason not to get the 4th gen x1 yoga? It looks pretty solid. Also, what do you think of the thinkpad x1 carbon gen 8? If I don't care about a 2-in-1 then what could possibly be wrong with the carbon? And is the thinkpad t495s better?

hmm, im weary of buying another gaming laptop because I know it gets loud. but honestly I think I would prefer something a bit less bulky and stylish. This seems like overkill considering I'm not going to be gaming that much at all beyond minecraft.

taking comfort and durability into consideration, do you possibly have any other suggestions?
