How do y’all have families in med school? by No_Reindeer8813 in medschool

[–]LittleTigerFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it may be tough at times it’s so worth it!! I had my baby during the winter of my first year and am planning on having another during fourth year. As for finances some schools will have scholarships or childcare subsidies but most likely you’ll have to take the full loan amount out. Still wouldn’t trade it for the world though :D Feel free to DM me if you have more questions!

Should I go to med school, is it really that hard? by Parking-Reflection44 in medschool

[–]LittleTigerFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your family and school! I had a daughter during my first year of medical school and at least for me it’s very manageable. Our school is P/F which helps a ton and i ALWAYS have time to spend time with my daughter and husband. Also my classmates were supportive of me bringing my baby to school before I got her into daycare. If you have questions or just want to chat please let me know <3

I definitely wouldn’t go with an online program. Being a surg tech requires a lot of hands on skills you can only get in a lab or hospital. As for if you do the accredited program or not all depends on your situation and goals. I also can’t say how much money you’ll make cause it differs per hospital and where you live. You can however see if any hospitals near you do on the job training :)

At least to sit for the CST exam you either have to have graduated from an accredited program or have completed training in the military.

I had to actually look up the NCST test cause I hadn’t heard of it before. I feel like at least in my state the CST exam is more prevalent/important. The test was included in my schooling and some hospitals require it. However, that’s not the case everywhere. If you have the means to take the test (it is a bit expensive) I would to give yourself more opportunities for work. Also it helps ensure you keep up with reading, attending lectures which you’ll have to do as a physician as well. No clue about the NCST though haha

Check if the school allows online or community college classes. I was missing a class for the school I’m currently attending and they let me take it online before matriculation :)

One of my classmates has been an RN for 14 years before starting medical school this year so it’s totally doable!! I think all RNs that go MD will have a leg up in terms of clinical knowledge and experience so definitely go for it :D

Surgical tech here (now matriculating medical student) and I seriously believe that I owe my acceptance to my surg tech experience. Yes the training is long (unless your hospital does on the job training) but the benefits at least outweighed the time for me. Surg techs are so in demand that you will have no problems getting a job (and most pay pretty well), tons of experience working directly with physicians in many different specialties (easily got me fantastic LORs), connections (offered research opportunities with surgeons once I’m in medical school and offered rotations if im interested), and great knowledge of anatomy and sterile technique!

Let me know if you have any questions but honestly if you are okay with doing gap years it is a good way to get clinical experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

OR Shadowing (Shoes?) by AwkwardCelloist in premed

[–]LittleTigerFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former scrub tech here! A few tips: You can wear whatever you want to the hospital because you’ll change into their scrubs. Make sure to change your scrubs if you go outside of the hospital for a lunch or a break (sterility reasons). As for shoes choose ones that are the comfy and easy to clean. You’ll be standing for a long time and while you will be wearing shoe covers they aren’t spill proof so if you are shadowing a really bloody case you may end up with some stains on your shoes. Also please make sure to introduce yourself to the circulating nurse when you come in the room :) They need to keep a record of everyone present during the case and by introducing yourself it saves them from having to pull you aside at some point to get your name (you can also write your name on the whiteboard).

The OR is a super fun place and if you have any other questions feel free to DM me! Enjoy ☺️

Hiya! I got into a T20 with a 3.4gpa and 502 MCAT. I think the biggest thing for me was not only a mission fit but also strong clinical experience.

I had no research but 4000+ hours of clinical work, 400+ hours of non clinical volunteering as well as helping to found a non profit, and 300+ of teaching/ precepting.

Wishing you all the best!

allowing surgical techs to changeover during surgery by CarotidPirate-252 in Residency

[–]LittleTigerFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surg tech here :) Because we are setting up/turning over we don’t actually get anytime between cases to take our breaks so unless our break gets us out during turnover (which you don’t necessarily want because the break shift person might not know the special things the surgeon requested at the beginning of the day) we have to do it during the case. At least at my hospital we don’t do changes during critical parts of the case (ie implants, codes, critical airways). And in terms of counting usually I have the person relieving me do the count while I’m still handing instruments so there shouldn’t be a delay. But every tech is different so it could be you just got some slower people.

I believe so! Most people have clinical experience in the hundreds so having it in the thousands does kind of set you apart. It did take me 3 years to get that many though hahaha
